Which do you favour, generally? Obviously some people have extremely high-calibre executive careers which require them to wear only the snazziest of footwear, but also some do NOT: which do you wear for work, which do you wear during, uh, 'leisure' time, do you favour one over the other if you're going out, is there significant male/female divide in this area at all? And so forth.

I have size 13 feet which does limit my footwear options somewhat, and I usually have to resort to purchasing from a Special Catalogue. Have recently got some fairly fantastic brown-leather-bowling-style kind of things, these are the firest casual-knocking-around-in shoes I can remember buying which aren't trainers. Am I more of a grown-up for this? All wacky footwear tales appreciated here.

ouch 13 shame it limits choice so much.

I collect trainers so always choose them over shoes. I have had one pair of shoes for the last 7 years (soon to be replaced).

No real tales of shoes tho, just a love of sneakers

Shoe Strainers!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I wear the same shoes at work and at home.

Also, size 13 is more common in the U.S.

hstencil, Friday, 23 May 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a difference between UK 13 and US 13?

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have 2 pairs of work shoes, until I stepped in a giant muddy puddle wearing one pair, which I still haven't cleaned off, so now I've got one pair of work shoes.
I've got cool red, gray, and white sneakers that I bought at the skateboard store, not because I skateboarded at the time, but because they have cooler sneakers there than anywhere else. But now that I'm skating again, they come in handy.
And I've got fake Doc Marten boots that I bought at the thrift store for a few bucks. They're about a centimeter too small, so if I wear them too long my feet start to hurt, but they were cheap and cool.

I am size 9. I am today wearing a pair of black Vans for my highpoweredexecutiveudiovisuallibraryjob. I normally wear these or Nike's or some Superstars, or else some brown Art shoe/trainer things which Emma hates.

Alex, uk13 = us14, us13 = uk 12

james (james), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't the US have different mens' and women's sizes?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. We crazy.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i believe a womans us5 would be uk3 (i used to work with womens feet) adopts pimp swagger

james (james), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Big ugly feet limit my choice too (UK 12). Went through a period of wearing one pair of scruffy Doc Marten shoes every single day, work or play. Now I've got a pair of trianersthatlookabitlikehikingbootsbutaretrainersreally so I often wear those instead out of work.

Got a pair of trianers that are too tight, and one pair that are too stupid, so I don't wear them.

Used to wear Converse all the time but decided they looked slightly daft on a bloke with greying hair. It's hard to get away with them over 30.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i have had two pairs of shoes most of my life, because i have found it is all i ever need; 1 pair of leather boot-height shoes (you know those swinging signs for shoe shops, where the whole sign is in the shape of an old-fashioned shoe? that's the style i've got!) and a somewhat rotating spot for sneakers. recently i have added a controversial third pair: white canvas tennis shoes made by nike. they are all white with white laces and great fun to put on right after it's rained because they're so white i look magic or something, how was i able to avoid all those puddles?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta be trainers for both work & play. Then when it's extra special play, knee high boots. hmm poss little pink sling backs with kitten heels hmmm. SORRY!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not sure i trust anyone who doesn't wear trainers

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther: no worries!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the best thing evah. Evah evah evah. Best thing I've read, come across, thought of, seen, experienced, whatever. That sentance. There. Best thing evah.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

they're so white i look magic or something

That's the best bit. Just had to read it again. Best. Thing. Evah.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tracer, I went all girlie for a second there! I love the idea of you magic white shoes. :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I favor things with heels. Or very bright flip-flops, but things with heels are even better.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Trainers (mostly Pumas), though I have a sneaking respect for the more dandylicious among us who where smart shoes casually and still look cool. Also, RJG has a unique but successful shoe style that I admire.
I went trainer shopping on the Kings Road today, but didn't find anything that even moderately appealed. There was a new kind of Puma I saw in Glasgow I'll be keen to check out again, though.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

trainers are dyer at the moment - on wednesday there are a new pair of nike being released but they are £200 so i am currently trying to justifyit in my head

james (james), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My new fairly fantastic brown-leather-bowling-style shoes have now arrived! and look really stupid with everything else I have, so they'll be going straight back. I think it's going to be have to be trainers again.

This is what happens when you try something new: inevitable disappointment. Learn from my 'example', kids.

Alex Linsdell (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Black shoes with my suit for work, white (or whitish) trainers the rest of the time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am extremely untrustworthy.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I look stupid in, uh, trainers, so I wear nothing but boots.

Dan I., Saturday, 24 May 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Am usually wearing black ballet style flats (Campers).. and I really want to get another pair of Mosquitoes shoes/boots but will not be near a shop that has them anytime soon (sadly). Just got some awesome bright fuschia flats.
Er, anyone know where to buy a good pair of trainers (I am in the US, wld prefer not to pay to have them shipped from abroad) on the web? I want green ones. Very, very bright kelly green. :)

daria g, Saturday, 24 May 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you all seem like quite functional people. have you never bought any shoes just to keep in the box and linger over at leisure?

i haven't had to wear thigns on my feet for a good couple of days now... i need a jobbe. oh wait i haven't got any smart shoes. nnngh

Haven't had athletic shoes since 14, when gym class stopped being mandatory. I wore nothing but Docs until a few years ago, when I started getting interested in fancy shoes. Now I have a pair of gucci boots and a pair of prada maryjanes.
