The NBA Draft

Wow. So the Pistons are getting creamed by the NJ Nets (the first team they're playing the playoffs who are legitimately much better than them), but at the same time we beat the odds (9%!) and got the #2 pick in the draft. The look on Jerry West's face was PRICELESS! All thanks to a Otis Thorpe for future first rounder which then-GM Rick Sund had the forethought to add a clause which made the Grizzles have to declare if they were going to give the pick BEFORE they had a chance to do individual workouts. And King James is 90 million richer and gets to stay in Ohio.

Anyway, Pistons are going to be the best team in the East for quite some time. Mark my words.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

So who goes 2nd, Mello or that kid out of Europe who's 20 and dropping 40 a night on grown men?

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and THERE IS NO CONSPIRACY.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

They have accounting people watching it... the reason it's not public is because it's confusing. The fix would've been giving West the #1, or if New York got Lebron.

Milicic is almost certain to get picked by the Pistons, although publicly Dumars is saying that they're gonna wait till they work out Melo. Milicic is supposed to be a total freak... 7'2", more skilled and athletic than Nowitzski, with amazing post moves and a sweet outside shot (he's getting a lot of comparisions to Garnett). Plus, he's not 20, he's 17! A lot GMs think that he's going to be a better player in the NBA than Lebron.

Starting lineup for the 2003-4 Pistons = Billups, Hamilton, Prince, Wallace (moving to PF), and Milicic in the middle... with Okur, Williamson, Atkins and Robinson coming off the bench. Milicic might not start at the beginning of the year if he's really raw, but from what I've read about that private workout yesterday, he could start right now.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How dare you speak ill of The Dirk. But, yes, I want to see that kid destroy shit.

He's talking smack about LeBron already.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I love Dirk!! I'm saying, Milicic is even more skilled and athletic than him!

Lebron... man. He was asked last night about how people go away to college to get away from home and to find themselves, and if it will hurt him staying in Ohio. His answer was, "No, I did a lot of traveling in high school. So I think I'm ready."

Poor kid. I really hope the Cavs hire Van Gundy or Silas to help him out. He's obviously got the physical skills, he just needs to have really, really good people around him. At least EVERYONE in the NBA knows this and will be making sure it happens.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

("I love Dirk!!" better not show up on the ILX Out of Context thread.)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard LeBron give a little talk to Jim Gray or some shit a month or so ago and he has the Jordan waffle-speak already.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

poor Carmelo's gonna be a Nugget!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwww...but the Nuggets just hired Adrian Dantley as an assitant!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Nuggets are the upswing, my man! Carmelo-Hilario!!! Best-named duo EVAH!

Anyway, Lebron will be a BUSTBUSTBUSTBUST. NO leadership on the Cavs. Wut, Dujuan Wagner & Darius Miles are gonna learn him???

I'm glad for the Pistons. I gots no idea what to expect from Darko, but at least he'll enter a system where not that much is expected of him.

And what the fuck's up with the Central Michigan center being projected to go No. 4?!?!? Doesn't anyone remember BIG COUNTRY REEVES or GREG FUCKING OSTERTAG??!?! Tall American honkies suck!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

SWG = Slow White Guy

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

After Shawn Bradley and Keith Van Horn, there's no way the 76ers will draft a white person ever again. Call it a hunch.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone else watch Shawn Bradley LOSE the tip on Tuesday?

You're 7'2", dude. Jump or some shit.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Shawn Bradley might be the worst basketball player in the history of worst basketball players. He's such a goofy motherfucker who has NO skills and is always out of control. It frustrates the fuck out of me to see him play. And he fouls ALL THE TIME and then he bitches about it relentlessly. Whadda cunt he is.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see Yao put on a little more muscle and CRUSH. Esp. if Shaq is on his way out. There aren't any centers except Tim Duncan anymore and I hate him. There'll be Milicic if he works out...

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That kid Chris Kaman from CMU is supposed to be fairly athletic and skilled, but yeah... SWG = yikes! (How about Mike Dunleavy??) Bradley is not only white and super thin, but he's also a MORMON!! OH NO!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Bradley is 7'6". Go Mavs.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

NNNOOOOO is he??

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Mormon = Mark Madsen

Shaq is def. on the downswing. There was a good Page 2 article last week saying Shaq's too fat and he's become shitty, etc., etc.

Yao needs to hang with his fellow Houstonian Ken Caminiti! He'll beef up right quick!

They always say these SWGs are athletic and have good "court vision" and are "floor leaders" which is all code for, "Yeah this dude sucks but we need a new mascot for the suburbanites!"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

dom, will you try to defend bradley?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

God no. He will always be hated in Dallas. The people that defend him are crazy, and the only defense they have is that he makes a relatively low salary for an NBA starting center.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

good! i was worried for a sec. they make up for his low pay with lafrentz's monster salary.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Yanc3y, everyone's saying that the one thing the Lakers need to contend again next season is for Shaq to hit the weight room and work his (large) butt off this off season and dropped 30 lbs.

I feel sorry for Shawn Bradley. He's just the NBA's most unlikable player in every respect... his biggest skill is being tall. But, go tell it to Chuck Nevitt:

http://www.nba.com/rockets/images/history/Nevitt.jpg

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, fuck that guy.

AAAAAAAAAAAA

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Nelson to Bradley: "On this one, Shawn, be tall! BE TALL!" And Bradley can even fuck that up! Getting his dunk blocked by the 6'6" Malik Rose??? Being scared to take up the ball because TONY PARKER was in the vicinity??? Gimme a break.

I once stood near both Shaq and Manute Bol at the same time. Fucking eerie.

Still waiting for My Giant Part II

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Shaq is probably a year or so away from hanging it up. I just don't think he cares that much anymore and all of the injurys seem to bug him quite a bit.

I've got a feeling that there are alot of nasty defencive stoppers in the NBA that are looking forward to laying a chop on James. I don't think he will have it as great as some think, at least not for a few years. If he doesn't become a head case, I will be suprised.

It wouldn't suprise me that Carmelo Anthony becomes a star before any of these other players. He is big enough not to get chopped down and with great speed and agility for his size. I really hadn't seen him play until the NCAA tournament, but he looked impressive.

Duane Wade looks like another player that could be a good pro.

The thing I have often wondered about for the past two years is how popular the NBA is in Europe. With so many good Europeans leading teams in the playoffs (Mavs, Spurs & Kings) are they being followed back home?

earlnash, Friday, 23 May 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Instead Muresan got that gig as Claire's boyfriend on Six Feet Under!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! He does look like that guy. I guess he got his acting start doing those local commercials in DC where he flubbed his line like 20 times.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Shaq made that Jordanesque pronouncement that he won't play for anyone other than Phil Jackson... My guess: the Lakers make another run next year, and then Shaq retires. I believe Kobe's contract will be up then too (is that right?), which should make things interesting...

Carmelo will be a solid pro. He played beautifully in the NCAA Tourney, but more importantly, he played NBA-type ball -- he can take guys off the dribble and he's great passing out of the doubleteam. Also, he's a fantastic rebounder.

And Duane Wade will struggle for a few years, but he'll end up turning into Bobby Jackson eventually, which would be excellent.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.iespana.es/zerfnba/archivo/billwalton/billwalton010.jpg

Throw it down, big man.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

At least at this point, Duane Wade has alot more scoring skills than Bobby Jackson did at Minnesota.

Bobby Jackson was a good college player, but he played a role not unlike what he does with the Kings.

earlnash, Friday, 23 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that Wade can score better than Jackson at this point (I remember Jackson at Minnesota -- very good), but Wade will have to adjust to the size differences in the NBA. He'll need to be even quicker. He'll have to master the quick pull-up jumper. He needs to turn himself into a defensive stopper. It'll take a couple of years for him to change the way he plays his game, but I think he'll be successful. And even better -- most mock drafts project him to go mid-to-late first round, which'll be a steal for whoever nabs him (not unlike Juan Dixon last year). He'll definitely be better than Kirk Heinrich and Chris Bosh and these guys that are being projected way too high.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting article in the new Sporting News that basically says Milicic is the best player, and really Melo has the best chance to succeed now, and when you get down to it, nobody knows if James will pan out.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

is it online?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! And I'm still undecided as to whether or not I like Sean Deveney.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you! i'll read it during lunch.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the thing from Chad Ford's ESPN Insider that has me drooling:

John Jay Gym, Manhattan, 11:06 a.m.

Darko Milicic has been in the United States for a grand total of 67 hours and already he's in the practice gym, stretching out, preparing for what is supposed to be his first light workout in the U.S.

The plan is for Darko to run the floor a bit, shoot some jumpers, go through a few drills and call it a day. He's still battling jet lag, and he looks exhausted. But plans change, and after a few minutes of warm-up, the workout is in for a sudden jolt.

Next door, Detroit coach Rick Carlilse is wrapping up the Pistons' shoot-around in preparation for Game 3 in New Jersey. When they're done, Pistons president Joe Dumars, vice president John Hammond, director of international scouting Tony Ronzone and director of player personnel Scott Perry sneak in for a peek at Darko.

Within a minute, Darko's light workout becomes a high-energy audition. The gym is silent as he goes through a series of intense drills around the basket.

He rolls to the left. Swish.

He rolls to the right. Swish.

He puts the ball on the floor, crosses over and attacks the basket. Slam.

He takes the ball on the block, throws a shoulder into his defender and attacks again. Slam.

The trainer throws the ball off the backboard. Darko grabs it in mid-air. Slam. Again. Slam. Again. Slam.

He takes the ball outside the NBA 3-point line, turns to the basket, dribbles once, then glides through the air. Kaboom.

Time stands still for just a second as Darko pauses, waiting for everyone else to catch their breath.

Then he trots to the free-throw line and starts shooting. He is relentless. He continues, pounding the ball inside. He hits a baby hook with his left hand. Then he does with his right hand. Darko seems to use his left and right equally.

A second later he's standing three feet beyond the NBA 3-point line. Swish. Swish. Swish.

Forty-five minutes later the trainers are sweating. Everyone has seen enough. More than enough.

Darko looks to his agent and asks, "More?"

"No."

He shrugs his shoulders and begins running laps around the gym.

That is how you ace an NBA workout.

Most teams will tell you the individual workout is highly overrated. Workouts over-emphasize speed, agility and quickness. They do nothing to measure the intangibles that are the lifeblood of the game. But with Darko, it will be different. Teams already knew he could play. When a 7-footer tests like that in individuals, you take him to the bank.

Rick Carlisle looks stunned for the entire 10 minutes he watches. Ben Wallace and Rip Hamilton shake their heads in amazement. Joe Dumars' mouth didn't close the entire time. His jaw was on the floor. Whenever he wasn't typing notes in his PDA, he was whispering quiet exclamations. "Damn!"

"That's a freak of nature right there," Dumars says after the workout's over. "And he's just 17. Seventeen, Chad."

"We could really use him," Hamilton says. "That kid can play. Too bad he can't suit up tonight."

Sharp-shooter Jon Barry agreed. "He'd be perfect for us. Perfect. The thing I like about kids like this is they only have one agenda, and that's to play. They take this job seriously. It's their way out of a bad situation, and they're not going to squander it."

Another scout was more specific. "He's a different breed of European than any we've ever seen. I'm not sure how anyone guards him the pros. That combination of size, speed, power and coordination is remarkable. Did you see how explosive he was around the basket? What's not to love?"

Fifteen minutes after the workout, Darko is still running around the gym.

"He didn't want that workout shut down," Ronzone said. "That kid just wants to keep pushing. He came to play."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

man i don't know shit about basketball but i loves me some HYPE

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahah... Check out this quote from earlier in the year:

But what really excites them is his mature low-post play. "More than Nowitzki, Gasol or even Divac, Darko has a nasty streak in him that will help him succeed in the post," a league executive said. "A lot of the Europeans are really threes in the pros. He'll be a true low-post player. His coach is doing us a huge favor by forcing him to develop those skills now. He already has moves that remind me of (Hakeem) Olajuwon in the post. Once we get a hold of him, the sky's the limit."

I mean, the kid is just 17! Imagine what he's gonna be like after battling Ben Wallace in practices for a couple seasons.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Hurray! The draft is tonight! I'm gonna pack up books and CDs and watch it. Here's my prediciton for the lottery picks:

1. Cavs = LeBron James (duh)
2. Detroit = Darko Milicic (jerseys go on sale right after they make the pick)
3. Denver = Carmelo Anthony (will prolly put up big #s and win Rookie of the Year)
4. Toronto = Chris Bosh (but I think he's gonna wind up playing for another team via trade)
5. Miami = Kirk Hinrich (if they pick someone other than Hinrich or Lample, they've traded th pick as well)
6. L.A. Clippers = T.J. Ford (the ESPN draft guide lists "New Owner" as one of their team needs... classic)
7. Chicago = Dwyane Wade (the Jay Williams injury is a big setback cuz it prevents them making from making a big trade)
8. Milwaukee = Maciej Lampe (if they trade up or go for a PG that means they think both Payton and Cassell are gone)
9. New York = Chris Kaman (perfect... a big gumpy white dude... he'll prolly get a 80 million dollar contract extension in 2006)
10. Washington = Jarvis Hayes (this team if fuXored royaly... will prolly wind up with the worst record in the league next year)
11. Golden State = Reece Gaines (will prolly be making a deal with Atlanta)
12. Seattle = Michael Sweetney (will prolly be making a deal with Toronto at #4)
13. Memphis = Mickael Pietrus (The Logo would get their man... small solace for losing the pick to the Pistons)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice, Aaron!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks! I think this is prolly one of the deepest drafts in the last ten years.... and I hate all the so-called draft experts who keep bitching about young and foreign players screwing up the game. Puh-leeze. I guess that means that Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzski, Peja Stojakovic, etc. etc. are scrubs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the two best players out of this draft will be Dwayne Wade and Carmello.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard anyone saying that - in fact, I always hear about Europeans forcing American kids to focus on fundamentals.

Also, new Sporting News had an interesting stat that showed the percentage of high school kids drafted since 1995 who "contribute" (play more than 18 minutes per game) today is higher than that of players drafted after playing any length of time in college.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm signing off boyz. time to get high and play video games! lebron eat yr heart out!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

got DAMN I'm tired of hearing about John Stockton the end of an era, Stockton to Malone, etc. I hate both those dudes...but not like a Jimmy Kimmel racist-type hatred, just kinda dull benign hate for cheapshot artist Stockton and gutless Malone

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwww... I hate them too, but man, watching them run the pick n' roll was like watching a work of art.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think ESPN blew out their budget getting Stu Scott to interview everyone's mom. I would like to see Dicky & Tolbert throw down, though.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dick Vitale's best moment: appearing with Valvano as "the V and V Boys" moving company on The Cosby Show after winning a bet with Cosby. I bet his audience was just as stymied as to who these two losers were as I was.

plus he ain't wearin no draws

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Really, it's a shame that the only thing Bill Walton knows about college basketball is Luke, because it'd be nice to hear him & TT match wits. Cough.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No! There's a trade in the works! Come back!

hahaha... I'm outtie after the Pistons pick...

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Pistons stockpile talent with an int'l player who won't come into the league for a season or two.

Okay, I'm out!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Nowitzki, I guess, but he ain't really a big man.
Aside from being seven-feet tall?

Mark Fucking Cuban (who gets slimier every time I see him on TV) better not trade off our Canadian for Jason Kidd.

Dallas with the two most outspoken anti-war players SHOCKER.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the reason he gets slimier is the proximity to said Canadian's hair

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

for the first time since they picked up reggie lewis in 1987 the celtics have actually improved themselves in the draft. now if 'toine could only drop 30 pounds and get his ass into the low post once or twice a quarter they might have something.

the high school kid isn't going to help them with their obvious need of a rebounder to grab all those bricks the c's hoist from beyond the arc but hopefully having an actual point guard who can, y'know, RUN THE POINT will lead to some easy baskets which will mitigate the need to live and die from the outside.

otto midnight, Friday, 27 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hate to say that Marcus Gaines isn't really a big improvement over JR Bremer, and Kendrick Perkins is 3-4 years away from contributing. Unless Ainge can pull some sort of magical trade (I think Fatoine will be playing somewhere else next year), the C's are headed for the lottery or at least a first round exit next year.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DINGDING!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Vin Baker trade = possibly worst trade of the last 10 years

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 June 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the vin baker trade, on face value, is the worst trade of the last 10 years. but when you get below the surface you realize how truly awful it was. the c's were just getting out from the mountain of cap debt rickey pitino piled on the club (the travis knight capbusting contract comes to mind) and then they go and deal a serviceable point guard (his royal petulence, kenny anderson) for a stiff who won't go to the low post unless there's a fifth of stoli under the hoop. and this clown takes up 23% of the payroll! on a team with 'toine and pierce!!! GAH!!!!!

from what i hear the shammond williams may have played his last game in celtic green, ainge is going to go with banks, bremer, and kedrick brown. at least banks can push the ball up the court. that's a huge plus for a team with no pivot man. there's no way the c's will be a lottery team next year, if you think that's the case then you have truly, truly, over rated the painfully bad brand of ball the eastern conference is capable of playing.

i know you've probably read it already, but if you haven't the sports guy's nba draft diary is pretty good this year.

Lebrons suit was the highlight. Was anyone sporting a Turquoise one this year?

The Minnesota Timberwolves traded forward Joe Smith and guard Anthony Peeler to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday for guard Sam Cassell and center Ervin Johnson.

So you think MJ was who actually made this trade?

This post (#15 on this thread) is exempt from that general judgment:

Shawn Bradley might be the worst basketball player in the history of worst basketball players.

Wow, talk about an unanticipated find of a time capsule. Feel the Darko love. . .my Cavs spent the first pick on Anthony Bennett in '13 so I shouldn't really talk.

I do think Duane Wade could eventually be as good as Bobbie Jackson, after struggling for a few years

He already has moves that remind me of (Hakeem) Olajuwon in the post.

Good that the writer clarified which Olaujwon Darko reminded him of
