Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

a friend had been badgering me for a while to sign up. so i did. and it's lame.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

thought it was cool for a minute, then realized it was sixdegrees.com with more pictures, which makes it more interesting for about 30 seconds.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing tops nerve personals.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a mazed how many of my freinds suddenly are appearing on it though. is it sweepin the nation?

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very slow for me, so I get bored quickly. I only like it because I posted my current favourite picture of myself on it.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It runs SO FUCKING SLOWLY too. And my friend keeps suggesting matches between me and these people I couldn't give two shits about. It's a dud.

And yeah, loads of my "friends" are on there. No one I'm close to though.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's better than Nerve, free and less pressure. It also got me laid. Nerve did too, but it seemed like much more work.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the point of it is to harvest more addresses for the important penis growing information that is being shared these days

Did you get the tape?

petra jane (petra jane), Saturday, 24 May 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanle y you disappoint me.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 24 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I've just signed up, but I couldn't bring myself to invite friends - that would be a long list of people who would want nothing to do with the site, I think. I'm just keen on the dating element really.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha there is a menu option reading 'Edit Friends'! I'll make this one a bit taller I think...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone wants to be my friend, email me.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 24 May 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone wants to be my friend, buy me a drink.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 24 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing left to dissapoint DASTOOR. Oh , and by the way , take a look in your foxbag, I think you'll find a nice little erection.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was talking to someone today who signed up for an internet trivia-game community that operates on some kind of buddy network. He hasn't really spent much time at the site yet, but the last time he did log in he got a message saying "YOU HAVE 0 FRIENDS." That made him sad.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be his friend.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

JBR, that made me laugh a lot :)

Mark C (Mark C), Sunday, 25 May 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my friends recently invited me to the site so I signed up and then I just had to invite some other people so I wouldn't have only one friend. I think it's kind of neat because you discover pretty quickly that a lot of your friends are connected to each other in various ways. It's like a big friendly web of love or something. But maybe it's just cause everyone in my entire city seems to be on there (or is it that popular everywhere?).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if anyone wants to push me over the 50 friends mark, use my yahoo email address to look for me on dat dere Friendsta thingy.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I gots 8 friends only cuz I'm so shy.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well I'd love to be your friend, if I'm worthy.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

will you be my friendster friend Sarah?

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be your friend, Sarah!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm hstencil's 50th. i feel so dirty.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, you're like number one in my heart.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendster needs some tweakin though... I suppose it is still in the design stages or whatever, so I guess it can be forgiven. I especially dislike that you can mark yourself as "in a relationship," but you can't actually indicate that one of the friends in your "personal network" is actually your SO.

I have already seen at least one person meet somebody to hang out with through it though, so there's got to be something at least marginally useful. Of course, like anything else it sorta requires that at least one person be the kind of person who would email a stranger based on a description on the internet.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

of person who would email a stranger based on a description on the internet.

and, ahem, no one here would do that. *whistles*

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I just signed up for this today, because I got an e-mail that said: "Reminder, your friend [So-and-So] invited you to join Friendster." I sort of resented the fact that it pestered me like a week after my initial invitation, but then I figured what the hey. Now apparently I have a Personal Network of like 48 people, but I only seem to know 2 of them, and the rest of 'em look like total dorks.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dude like be my friend jaymc!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

it's in the works! (or at least, I invited you to be my friend. do I have to do something else to be yours?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(you can use this e-mail address.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking awesome dude. you rule. hey you know that nicolas is on there too.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

kick ass!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him up at Bard last Friday.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, cool. Didja mention me?? He's hardly ever in Chicago anymore. (Hey, but I think that's his old e-mail on Friendster. I don't think it'll go through.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

whaddaya mean he's hardly in Chicago? He told me he still works at Comiskey and Wrigley!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

NICOLAS: FLY ALL IS KNOWN

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I know. I just mean, he goes to NY pretty frequently. Like every couple months or so. I also haven't seen him since his birthday in April.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it's the second time I've seen him this year, both kinda random. Wish the dude would freakin' call sometime.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer: ??

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry jaymc, he's just being a mentalist (per the usual).

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, Zoe, Yanc3y and hstencil are my friends! YAY!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

link (friendster sounds like a subtle (and perhaps manipulatable?) panopticon i.e. if everyone knows everyone else the gossip gets exponential too and hence sensitivity and barricading from it)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

dude your level of participation is up to you.

(and Ally sez I'm paranoid!)

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"dude your level of participation is up to you" = the DEFINITION of the panopticon's particular system of control

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i know i am taking this too far

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

unless this whole friendster thing was thought up by the folks at the INFORMATION AWARENESS OFFICE!

*cue spooky music*

Am I the only one for whom all Bulletin Board postings have disappeared?! This happened like two days ago and I haven't received a post from a friendster since..

Just wondering if this is just me..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There seems to be some real problems with the basic messaging software at least -- I've had various folks tell me they've been trying to send replies but can't even get in the system most of the time. Hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been on the shit since it opened in March. It's free, beats the hell out of nerve, carries more info, etc. etc. I have a ton of friends - real ones - from all over on it. Old girlfriends getting a hold of me from Japan, high school buddies, kids I ain't seen in 6 years. Sometimes I use it in place of email. And the bulletin board is clutch - beats the shit out of mass-emails when you need people to know something. I say classic.

Major Grubert (Grandin), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. D, that happened to me earlier this week, then they all came back. weird.

Even weirder a friend of mine had his profile, friend list and all testimonials just disspear today. He's having to build the thing up from scratch again!

(fears for own profile)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that applies to friendship generally.

New happenings at Friendster; when you log in you're presented with a couple questions asking about how far out you want to be connected. It's cool because the graphic is a hexagon map which reminds me of Starfleet Battles!!

Also, site seems much faster.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 21 February 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

*tests all this* Yeah, definitely a step up so far.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I just noticed the same thing. Looks like they've finally got some advertising going which means they could afford better servers than the Colecovision they had running before.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 21 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

friendster tells me "Do not upload photos containing children, pets, cartoons, celebrities, nudity, artwork or copyrighted images."

does anyone have a photo that covers all of these categories??

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 21 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 21 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

A hand-drawn approximation of Macauley Culkin chasing after that stupid spider on the cover of the Home Alone novelization is about as close as I think you can come.

Because I'm such a big ass loser (as opposed to a big assed loser), I just joined Friendster a couple of weeks ago, but really have no earthly clue has it works, and the only person who has asked to be my friend is...er....Jaz Coleman (to say that I doubt the authenticity of this individual's purported identity is like saying I doubt that the earth is flat). So, anyway, someone help a white boy out and tell me what the fuck I'm doing. Thanky, Spanky!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

earthly clue how it works.....clearly, or how to spell, for that matter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Friendster is kind of dead. It still doesn't work properly - I've had the same "new message" notice for two months. Frankly myspace, despite all it's haphazard and vulgar oddness, is much more compelling and useful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Myspace is SO SLOW and installs spyware.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

install a spyware blocker/removal tool. And I've not found it to be particularly slow (maybe if you're on dial-up.)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Myspace is SO SLOW and installs spyware.

This is not true of myspace itself.

However, it may be true of certain profile pages you might visit there (just as you might visit certain pages anywhere on the net). Also, it's never slow for me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I've been having horrible page load times for everything on it, not just people with shitty pages. Logging in takes like a minute at least. Tons of "unexpected errors", etc.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

You need to join Friendster's crappiest cousin, Multiply! That is what I'm on.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

xpost, hmm, I'll get a "server too busy" or an "account under routine maintenance" page occasionally, but I've never had long delays with logging in...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

myspace

Latest Update: 05:22PM PST, Friday, July 29th.

friend counts were previously inaccurate. we're running database jobs to update the counts and show the true number of friends you have. so if your friend count suddenly drops in number, you didn't lose friends, you're just seeing the accurate number of friends. don't worry, you're not less popular. thx

YO also - if you are in the UK and you can't get to MySpace this morning, it's because British Telcom decided to shut down your access. this has happened before with other ISPs - they don't believe the amount of traffic we're pushing is real. so go here and tell them its real and you want your myspace back!!
