40 year old anythings and the people who love them

I am starting this thread in refutation of the claim that "40 year old anythings are gross". Originally I intended to simply say "this statement is patently false, oh and Martin Skidmore rox u fuxors" but look man, I have to start a new thread to laud my hero Dave Rowntree who did in fact turn 40 this month. A few months ago when it was my 24th birthday, I was horribly depressed because I really felt I hadn't accomplished anything in my life - gotten a degree, written a novel, made an album, appeared in a film, travelled the world, &c &c. anyway I thought time is running short and I AM A FAILURE argh. Then a month later I'd gotten the Blur DVD and was watching the Leisure-era videos when I realised, fuck me Dave is already 28 in those nostalgically youthful clips, I STILL HAVE TIME!! HURRAH!!! and although I haven't actually done anything yet towards immortalising myself thru art, this whole thing cheered me up immensely, and isn't that the best thing things can do for you. Dave I love you. ahem.

I dated a 41 year-old woman last summer.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Norman, one of my dearest friends and far and away one of the coolest people on the planet turned 41 last November. He fucking rocks.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The bass player in my band is 42 and a complete legend.

My dad turns 60 this year. My grandmother is in her late nineties. I've been alive for 26 1/2 years and THAT seems like an eternity to me, so 90-plus years doesn't even scan. Living that long is a major accomplishment... or something.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, didn't you know, darlin? This is LA - nothing/no one's over 39.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(oops he's not forty but you old folks all look the same to me after a certain pt)

minna (minna), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Poppy! I'm really flattered! I should point out that there is at least one even more wonderful 40-something on this board - Mark S and I will both be 43 for one day next month, before I am once more a year older than he is. I think the great Dr C might be 40 or so too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm 40, i've been 40 for like 6 mo., it's time i grew the fuck up

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Duane have some kids, that's grownup

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I turn 42 in a couple of weeks. I wish I knew more people in their 50s and 60s. It's so easy to meet/become friends with people in their 20s and 30s.

Duane, I love you. You could become an elementary school teacher. I wonder if it'll work for me.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I am but eight months away from turning 40, assuming of course that I get there :-(

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I went to this bar in the East Village and the bartendrix looked exactly like the 41 year-old I dated! That was weird, but not necessarily in a bad way.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I look 40, no joke. I do ok, for a 40 yearold.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I exaggerate a bit, though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

my drummer is 40, and has been for six months. he is the coolest old man i know. i don't have any tips on growing the fuck up for him.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My best friend is 46 and he roxor. Age ain't nothin' but a number baby.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Frank Kogan is older than me, by the way, and he is brilliant.

I have no tips for growing up, as I still don't feel I've really managed it. I still wander into meetings with senior people and we're all in suits and talking about strategy and stuff, and I still feel like a kid faking it, dressing up as an adult and trying to pass myself off as mature and all that, and expecting people to see through it. I've kind of given up on ever growing out of that feeling by now. I suspect everyone feels like this, to some degree.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

**I suspect everyone feels like this, to some degree**

I dunno. I think the majority of people (I'm really talking about 'men' here) by the time they reach 40 have developed a thick 'adult' skin which in time has replaced much of their youthful selves. At work I think most men of my age, despite seeming outwardly confident, achieving etc are desperate to fit in and gain acceptance with their peers - hence a currency of 'men's stuff' to show that they're rounded and sociable. You know - cars, golf, computer stuff...

I'm not saying that they don't take genuine pleasure in these activities, but they're really adopted (maybe not even *consciously)in the first place to fit in, to be secondary 'acceptable' time-fillers to kill the odd Sunday when they're not slaving over spreadsheets or walking round the garden centre with their families. The path of least resistance.

These guys like sport too - they're hoping to watch the European cup final tonight but they're not really sure who's playing....

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

if the guys dr c is talking abt are immune to "mid-life crisis" then he's right: if not then the skin does not go all the way in

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No doubt there can be many kinds of mid-life crisis. Possibly some are due to realizing that they've been playing a meaningless game for the last 20 yrs. But also I reckon it's also part of the game - 'shagging Jenny from accounts*' is seen as a business guy's rite of passage.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hm. I have a handful of dear friends over 40 who are each badass in their own special way and none of whom would ever merit the disclaimer "for someone who is over 40" as part of a description.

40 year old anythings though... it's pretty well-documented that I'd love a 1963 Fender Jaguar. That's one of a couple guitars that I know I won't be able to afford without a fluke pawn shop score or winning lottery ticket, but holy shit would I play that fucker if I scored one.

A few weeks ago I was loving someone 40, now I'm loving someone 41. 40 is quite young.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

is your love ageing them whole years in just a couple of weeks?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 29 May 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, no - as he's adamant that he's just turned 23.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tips for growing up...? Don't. You're a long time old..why rush to get there?
