How often have you______because someone on ILx recommended it?

Read a book?
Listened to a song or bought a record?
Watched a movie?
Gone to a restaurant? Tried ?
Had sex with DJ Grizz in the back room of a seedy bar?

How much influence do we exert over one another's lives anyway?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus shamed me into buying 'King Tubby's Prophesy of Dub'. god, i thought there was more. i guess i haven't got around to the other recommendations yet.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried farming cocks.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

lmao

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been inspired to check out music maybe a half dozen times.. and don't get me started on the things Martin Skidmore has inspired me to (want to) try

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Martin, can you just give me a list of all music I should hear? ;)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not as supple as I used to be, so I can't quite eat my fuc.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the thought that counts.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Jim & Oops! If you are serious, check out what I was recommending to Mark S on that thread called something about teaching him a lesson over on ILM. Several favourite tunes of mine. I LOVE sharing enthusiasms with others, and I'm delighted if that comes across to others sometimes.

Quite a lot: Tim H has turned me on to some British hip hop, for instance, and over the last year when I go to my unread-bookcase (yes, obviously one doesn't read a bookcase - you know what I mean!) I regularly find myself heavily influenced towards writers someone here has recommended. Mark S talking about Miss Smill's Feeling For Snow made me grab that a while back, for instance. I've even tried a couple of restaurants that have been recommended here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have lots of examples of books and songs/albums...movies and restaurants, not really. I see kajillions of films anyway so I don't conciously recall a suggestion making me want to see something I hadn't before. But I know I probably wouldn't be listening to even half of the things I am now if it weren't for ilx.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Music for sure (Matt Pond PA and some other very good bands), food also (had a whole bunch of peas last night!), books not so much, although Ned inspired me to read The Book Of Lost Tales. I haven't been able to watch many movies the last few years so I've started to make a list thanks to you people.
I think ILx just forces me to think out side of the box a little more than I had been for the last few years, and that's more important.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you guys've made me realise how ridiculous & contemptible people talking about themselves & their feelings & stuff is when it's writ down, i've become even more repressed & uptight. a good thing!

duane, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have started reading fiction again. also heard abt records i otherwise wouldn't have.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Music absolutely, films as well. I'm going to have to look into all of those Chicago restaurants that were recommended when I'm feeling up to it.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a record by a band because someone on ILx shagged them.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've bought a CD here and there on the basis of ILM recommendations, or even more partly based on ILM recommendations and partly based on recommendations elsewhere. It seems that a number of people have bought Oum Kalthoum CDs partly because of my harping on about here. So far no one has come back to say they were overwhelmingly happy with those CDs, which makes me feel almost guilty.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday I bought a music magazine with a drum n bass compilation, soley on the recommendation of one person, but I did it partly because I was simply in the mood to buy something like that impulsively, something I wouldn't ordinarily buy. I was already primed to be influenced.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. i was v happy w/the cassette you sent me rockist and I'll def get round to following up those kind of 'avenues' in the future.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Battle Royale yesterday and I picked up the Electric 6 album. Plus the recurring nightmares about finding Killing Joke records in the strangest of places.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What happened to my post? :(
Father Ted, Real Genius, Lollies cd - and Putney Swope which we saw this weekend. ILX = good influence.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, Putney Swope, which was...weird.
Julio influenced me to get a Borbetomagus cd. Thanks.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad you guys...enjoyed it?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio influenced me to get a Borbetomagus cd. Thanks.''

my work here is done.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"bingo"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought and read Like Punk Never Happened, thanks to you people.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I did too!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex with DJ Grizz, tho...neither he nor any other male who is interested in having sex with me has crossed my path in recent months.
:^{

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i made dastoor's "asparagus appointment" recipe twice now and each time its been better than sex

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy and Ed have both posted some fantastic recipes. I'm also a much better cook because of ilx.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I already had heard Borbetomagus, so I was not tricked into buying anything by them.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

downloaded music, definitely. read a book, no, though now i'm curious about ulysses.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

''I already had heard Borbetomagus, so I was not tricked into buying anything by them.''

:-(((((

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i had my hair cut at 'hair by fairy' yesterday, as it was recommended here...and was happy with the suggestion and the haircut (and the price)

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Because of ILM, I dug up Music Has the Right to Children and gave it another listen, and it didn't sound quite as bad as I thought it was when I bought the record.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I basically use this place as a recommendation centre. I come here to be inspired to listen/see/read/do.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep meaning to buy records recommended by Rockist Scientist, but can never remember what they are called when I am in a shop.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

DV, It's hard to remember it when you aren't sure how to even pronounce it. I know that feeling.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

mostly bands.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i spent a good while being sure that rockist scientist and the dvwere the same person. more specifically that rockist scientist was a persona the dv had invented (given that i know the dv).

and on topic, i too have had baked asparagus recently due to it being recommended here. i also had marmite and blue cheese toasted sandwiches.
