Windy! Friendly! Large! Great for walking around in and pretty damned wonderful. Oh, and coffee everywhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Bars and cafes in the strangest places, hidden away like little gems among the crumbly old laneways.
The view from the Princes bridge (similar to above pic) across to Southgate at night, when the lights are all reflecting on the Yarra and the gas flares at the Casino are going off.
The butterfly house at Melbourne Zoo
That new Ian Potter gallery at Federation Square - magnificent!
Endless clubbing variety.
Gorgeous people.
Moonlight Cinema at the Botanic Gardens

argh someone stop me!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been there for years. I worked in Melbourne for about eighteen months, and really liked it. They had trams! And what's that store called? Myers? That was nice. Great Chinese food in the Chinatown area too. I have two cousins living in Melbourne, which obviously makes it a Really Great Place.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Trams, how could I forget trams! I heart trams.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

there's so many

great pubs and bars
dynamic live music scene
meteorological diversity
victoria, lygon, brunswick, chapel streets
pellegrini's
the hawthorn football club

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not mel BORN ...

olivia newton john (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that I've never, ever heard anything but good and intriguing things about it, and have always wanted to go there. And I'm on the other side of the planet. And should be sleeping. WTF!

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the bars, the coffee, the parks, moonlight cinema, carlton, fitzroy, st kilda, the european feel, the really bad weather, the cold.

There's no place like home.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Heres a pic I took a year or so ago, nice view of the city from the Southgate complex. This bridge is so pretty.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. both that and the top photo could pretty much have been taken from the same spot

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wellington is to Melbourne is to San Francisco as Auckland is to Sydney is to Los Angeles.

(haha tho I'm not much of a Wellington person.)

also, considering that I was raised in NZ & until the age of 10, I thought AFL was NZ's national game . . . thanks, Dad.

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim - heh yeah I actually have a second pic thats almost identical to the one you pasted except the light in the sky is different. Sp00ky.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Really good variety and quality of food, great shops. Fantastic and cheap public transport. Unfortunately the beer is rubbish, but the wine is enough to make up for that. Not too hot.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Great record shops (for new stuff, anyway), trams, Australia has state plates! "Hungry Jack's". Alex V. The Arthouse. ESOJ, if we'd met him, I'm sure.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i'll big up the food in melbourne for sure! we are to food what japan is to electronics

minna (minna), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep thinking of this LUSCIOUS pizza, but that was in Vanuatu! Melbourne has MILLIONS of venues, that's great, tho the gig-going etiquette (only judging by the Sleater-Kinney crowd) was a bit lacking. It has a really good feel, Melbourne. I want to go back. Oh the minisupermarkets, they're great!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

love melbourne with a passion and spent a stack of time there a couple of years ago when i was seeing someone who lived there. great live music and comedy venues, great restaurants, great galleries, great australian sporting culture, funky (if a little convoluted)transport system, great bastion of old-style politeness among its people (generally) as opposed to sydney's fuck-you vibe (generally). best record stores in australia. beaches are way outta place tho.

angelo (angelo), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I love Melbourne so much. The kids are friendly and the boys are SO CUTE. The girls probably are too, but I was distracted by their incredible fashion sense to notice. The markets are great like Camberwell [is that right?] and the Prahran market is good for produce and THE WORLD'S YUMMIEST OYSTERS. Fun bars, great bands, good parties, tasty coffee... Though the weather is sort of fucked up.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cricket Ground... with fucked up weather:

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice photos Phil :)

I highly recommend anyone currently in, or going to be in, Melbourne should go check out the Ian Potter gallery at Federation Square - its free, its amazing inside and the artwork is excellent. Well some of it is fusty old shit but the whole top level is comtemporary stuff, and really cool.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, now I really want to go back to Melbourne... It's my favorite city ever. well, after new york and tokyo.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay

re: gig-going etiquette - the S-K show was atypical.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ESOJ.... guess what im listening to right now.. your favorite melbourne band

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

*sob*

i think someone told kellie (who i've never met) that i didn't like her band and every time i see her out and about she greasies me off :(

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, now I really want to go back to Melbourne...

Man, same here. Damn you and your great photos! *grousegripe* ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh really? kellie isn't the kind of person who would do that! i don't think... well either way, it wasn't me :)... uhhh, if you see her, tell her Phil from NYC says 'hello'...

But I just put in another melbourne band into my CD player... "The Emergency"? They're pretty good.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks ned! except the part about being damned

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm probably just my paranoid imagination.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that when you get the shits from Chinese food?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha i didn't really... it is conceivable that she heard it via me tho! but very unlikely.)

minna (minna), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oops - heh. Nah its when you grab someones arm with both hands enclosed round it and twist each hand in opposite directions real hard. I think also called Indian burn or something? Maybe its a bizarre Australian thing. God knows :) God also only knows why it's called that.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ya, goes by Indian burn here.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it is conceivable that she heard it via me tho! but very unlikely

it's possible she doesn't actually know me from a tin of beans anyway. i just didn't wanna offend her 'cos she's cute and stuff.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww... ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 May 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 29 May 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

minna (minna), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything in Melbourne is readily accessible. Whatever you want is there.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

even booty?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 May 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 29 May 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Haitch's six years of research comes to a shocking conclusion!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:04 (sixteen years ago)

Haitch come down to Carlisle st I'm sure you can find plenty of booty there, $50 an hour and she's not much of a looker but hey!

seagulls are assholes (Trayce), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:12 (sixteen years ago)

Haitch's next job is to hunt for the mythic koala taco.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

koala taco: malarkey? or effective way?

"woah man, flügelhorn" (haitch), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ the AiH stuff upthread, in light of more recent developments

"woah man, flügelhorn" (haitch), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

why is ned raggett, documented melbourne visitor, so shocked by haitch's research.

estela, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

I would never be shocked by his diligence.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

Why estela, are you impugning Mr Ragget's ability to procure booty?

seagulls are assholes (Trayce), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

a man with merely a single 't' in his surname is clearly not good breeding stock

more posts that will never be released (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

au contraire trayce, ned's deep shock at haitch's findings made me suspicious.

estela, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

Oh dear I mispelt Ned's name. Well ain't my face red.

seagulls are assholes (Trayce), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:23 (sixteen years ago)

that's ok tryce

The bells on ((old)er)) trams sound like the bell in Liquid Liquid's 'Bell Head'.
