Let's just cut to the chase, then.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's... um.... in Iowa?

Oh wait, you said something nice.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Manhattan Transfer have a song called "The Duke of Dubuque" that my a capella group did an arrangement of.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I like saying it.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I have nothing good to say about Iowa whatsoever after being trapped there for a weekend with a broken down car in January of 92 - it was miserable. I'd like to say that shenanigans ensued, but no, they didn't. It was just.... Iowa.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Haterz. Haterz. HATERZ.

J0hn "I live in Iowa, most of you wiseasses have never even been here" Darn1elle, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

(and spending a weekend someplace while waiting for yr car to get fixed tends to lower one's opinion of anyplace i.e. if you got trapped in NYC while on a long drive south, a large part of your experience would be "holy shit! I just spent ALL the money for the whole trip on food and lodgings!")

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

whoa luna, I was trapped in IA w no car in 92. It would take me another 4 years to get out.

Never been to Dubuque, tho. I hear it's nice. On the river.

kinda of a tarot card vibe here:

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

J0hn, you forget I'm from MINNESOTA; I'm bound by duty and breeding to tease Iowa and Wisconsin.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been to Iowa, it was okay. Not to Dubuque, though, but Iowa City. They have a pretty okay record store there.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't know you from up north, Dan! You are to be commended for showing restraint, then. Though it's the folks from Omaha (the Chelsea of the midwest, don'tcha know) who seem most vitriolic in their Iowa-bashing.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't that cute, all these upper Midwest people think they have different states instead of being a collective glop of flyover country! Hey wait, how come I'm being attacked with sharp sticks?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned in pretending to be Momus shocker!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, people in OMAHA have the nerve to make fun of someone? Did they forget they're in Nebraska?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ummmmm...the little old lady from Dubuque has been true to her old-fashioned ways?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned in pretending to be Momus shocker!

I may have a Mac but aren't I disqualified for not being vegetarian?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

real! records. yeah, it's pretty good, tho I haven't been since I was a kid. Iowa City is nice, probably the one 'cool' town in the state (U of I is there).

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but there are things to do in NYC... Do you know what there was to do in Des Moines at 2 am on a Friday night/Saturday morning? NOTHING. That pattern repeated itself over the next two days.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you know what there was to do in Des Moines at 2 am on a Friday night/Saturday morning? NOTHING.

Heh, a big part of the appeal for me

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my grandma lived in Dubuque as a kid. Isn't Letterman fond of it?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

As a 19 year old party girl, I thought it sucked. I'm sure IA is a perfectly nice place and that Dubuque is a charming town, but it would take this much pure cocaine http://www.ghphotography.org/Colora34.jpg to get me to go back.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(Having said that, fuck it, they probably wouldn't want me anyway).

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

heh they'll take all comers. During the boom 90's the labor market was so tight (all college-educated young people flee) that the state and even some towns were actively courting foreign immigration.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ha there probably IS that much METH.

There was a HUGE meth bust in my hometown. It was one of the local butchers, pillar of the community etc etc. He got the chemicals through his shop and cooked it in his basement. Doubtless he rolled on anyone he could, and rumor had it his church footed (some of) his legal bills.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you pronounce Dubuque?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

duh-BYOOK

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

("OO" like "loo")

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

rhymes with "a touque"; "touque" rhymes with "fluke"; Fluke was a techno band

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Duh-byook (emphasis is on the 'byook)

wow, we phonetically spelt it the same! Hail Bolingbrook schooling!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha. Bolingbrook was just mentioned on the Cubs broadcast.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Why? I assume it was something bad since that's the only press it's gotten lately.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(Damn I was going to say, "It's pronounced 'zzzz-ZZZZZZZZ-zzzzzzz-snort-grumble-ZZZZZZZZZZ.'")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

A listener from Bolingbrook was selected to play the guess-the-attendance game. Only funny because Pat Hughes said, "Mark Brown from Bolingbrook ... from ... (slowly) Bolingbrook ... Bolingbrook. Hmm."

Bad press = the dude at the Sox game?

(Hijacking the thread to talk about obscure Chicago suburbs)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

that and didn't you hear about the flea market incident? it made it onto Fark.com

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Not doo-boo-kay then?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Not without dinner and a movie first.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

other pronunciatory pitfalls of Iowan geography: Madrid (MAD-rid), Peoria (PEER-y) and What Cheer (WATCH-er). Beware.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

also, "Nebraska" is pronounced "Kansas"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"Kansas" is pronounced "Where?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, be careful of that one.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)
