I'm thinking of flying up there for a weekend sometime around late June to late July. Should I? Should I not? (I mainly want to see what high summer is like in the northern extremities, really.. )

I gather if you get in the wrong place in Alaska in summer the mosquitoes will make mincemeat out of you, so there is that to consider.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

donut, i fear that ned's right. beware of skeetoes. although the time i spent in anchorage should be considered as 'just passing through' i did enjoy the surrounding areas. if you rent a car you can visit some outlying nature of alaskan proportions. oh, and take some sleeping aids to deal with the evening sun. btw - have you found any good flight deals from sea-tac to anchorage?

j.a.e., Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes! Well, I checked the Alaska Air site, and it looks like $400 is my cheapest option (from Seattle and back)... Maybe I should look/wait for deals first?... ack.

Anchorage is fun for about three or four days, but if you can swing the cash and the time I'd take the Alaska Ferry instead of flying - or perhaps fly up and take the Ferry back. Renting a car and getting out of town is U & K but beware of price gouging in the touristy areas, especially around Denali National Park.

Mosquitoes get really bad in spring and late summer. I was there in August and there were clouds of them in the rain foresty areas on the Valdez - Tok highway. Not so much around the cities themselves.

BTW, the Insomniac episode in Anchorage is OTM.

I'm really excited about this, but I'm soo disappointed with the costs of flights up there. I realize I can only do this on a Friday-into-Sunday, which are always the most demanded and therefore expensive flights...

but THE HELL, I still can't imagine tons of people having conversations like "Oh, honey, I can't decide which summer vacation paradise to choose from.. oh wait, I got it! ANCHORAGE, ALASKA! *stunned gasps of joy all around the room*"

ThanQ Chris, Ned, and JAE, of course. :)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 29 May 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I'm booked for Anchorage.. the weekend of July 12th/13th.. If I think one more time about how much I spent for all the booking necessities, I'm going to cry....

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 7 June 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You gonna CRY now, baby?

Though that reminds me, let me book the damn NYC tix already...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 June 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That much fun, eh?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fun's not the right word... "puzzling" and "magical" is more like it, though never at the same time

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds pretty good to me. I don't need a lot more puzzlement, but I sure could use some magic.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I learned that puffins are like freaky little black potatoes with wings.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you julienne and fry them just as easily?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, no. The wings, you see.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

So you make buffalo wings out of those.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, no, it's not an issue of tastiness, it's an issue of "you have to catch them before you cook them". And potatoes are relatively easy to catch, compared to puffins.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever tried? (Admittedly I haven't either, but some of those potatoes are quick and fierce.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

PICTURES WILL BE FORTHCOMING (probably in a separate thread).

Oh, and now that I'm somewhat composed again, in brief:
1) Anchorage sucks
2) Kenai Fjord cruises are THEE ROCK!
3) Flying out of Seattle right after dusk (10pm Pacific Time) into Anchorage (12:30am Alaska Time) in mid-July, where it seems dusk slowly reverses itself, and a deep orange moon sets while the sun is still out, is an experience that I imagine coming off hallucinogenic goods is like... oooooooooo BOY! something I'm glad I did, but never anything I want to experience again for a while

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

..oh, and this mosquito scare thing was a crock. Never saw a single f'in mosquito the whole time.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, that's some massive B.O. problem you've got then.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Always pack ma' Bizitch Off spray whenever I roll, yo
