FAP Sunday June 1st

Okay, there is a chance that Melissa might be able to join us at a Sunday FAP, especially if it is anywhere near where she'll be, i.e. at Suzy & Ed's. So can we have suggestions for a Sunday evening thereabouts? Somewhere with a garden might be nice in case the weather is good.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, we do live over a bloody pub. With Thai food and everything.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

!!! Suzy, how come you have not trumpeted this lovely fact more often?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(bump)

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it's even a FAP pub!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it have a beer garden?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i might be up for this; on the other hand the lack of weekend trains between baker st and liverpool st might put me off. which pub is it exactly?

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The only beer garden I can think of locally is at the Coach and Horses down behind the Guardian, but that's shut on a Sunday.

Our extremely local Local is The Duke of York, a very large pub on Clerkenwell Road opposite the junction with Leather Lane. Although it does have a couple of picnic tables out front, there is no beer garden.

The train situation this weekend sounds pretty crap; Chancery Lane - the other closest station - is also closed on Sundays. However if people get a Tube to King's Cross they can get to the Duke on a southbound 45 or 46 bus. People who take the Tube to Russell Square have a pleasant 10-minute walk. People who take the Tube to Angel can ride the west/southbound 19, 38 or 341 buses to the Vine Hill stop on Rosebery Avenue (there's a stairwell leading to Vine Hill, the little lane that leads to the pub. Go down the stairs and walk up the road to find pub on the left). People coming from Tottenham Court Road station ride the 19, 38, 55 eastbound (and the 55 stops 20 yards from the pub).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and the Crouch End Massive take the 91 to Theobalds Road/Southampton Row junction (South Londoners can get any of those buses that go north up Kingsway and get off at the Theobalds junction too) and walk east on Theobalds (which becomes Clerkenwell Road after Gray's Inn Road) as it's only 10 minutes on foot to the Duke.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Small addition to Suzy's excellent directions: people can go to Blackfriars and walk (maybe 10 minute walk up New Bridge Street / Farringdon Road to Clerkenwell Road) or get the 63. (You can get the 63 from Kings Cross too).

No beer garden = excellent thing. Eating and drinking outside is rubbish.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But... drinking outside = sport of kings!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The duke of York sounds OK to me (might turn up if i decide to do some work on sunday). If the weather is nice then any walking is OK w/me. time?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Outside drinkers = beasts of the field

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Drinking on benches outside pub = dud

Drinking in a beer garden on a sunny day = classic

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

does it have a bear garden?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 29 May 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

tim hates fun, which is not surprising (he left the FAP v quickly).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(i) Julio I'll take fun-related grief from you the next time I see you out for a late one after a FAP. (That is to say: ignore Julio he is insane)

(ii) all the best fun is to be had indoors obv.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

If I am a Londoner again by Sunday I may be able to make this.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought they'd fixed the top of the circle line for a bit, it was certainly working last saturday night, and i thought i saw a sign saying there wasn't going to be any further disruption til the end of the summer...

...but don't trust me, i don't know much abt tubes...

what sort of time are we doing this? i'd vote for abt 4ish (ie after monaco grand prix innit ;))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh i'm in London on Sunday, what time will the frolicks begin?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So how do these things work if it's your first one? I mean do you lurk without making yourself known, or do you just run into the pub shouting 'I'M HERE!!!' huh?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You bumble up, look sly, go "hmm ILE then" at the bunch of obv mentalists drooling into their pints, and then run away if you have sanity.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You bumble up looking scared stiff in my case I'm thinkin!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

wear a pre-announced t-shirt saying "i heart redbridge" (or something else if u prefer)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Approach the group of people who don't look like cycle couriers.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But Ed, you'll confuse them with your dreds.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not wiry enough have biked 8 hours a day for the last few years.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I could shout 'I'm Pinkpanther!' but then of course people may ask to see my tail!!! I mean, as if I'd show that straight away!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this is a grebt idea pinkpanther :) shouting random things in pubs is always good :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Shall we say 6.30, 7pm?

What you have to do is sidle up to random people in the pub and say "Excuse me, but do you love...everything?" in a sinister sounding voice. No, that won't get you in any trouble. (Better advice: click on the blue 'Martin Skidmore' below this and look at my photo - I'm normally among the first arrivals at any FAP.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I recon you should offer anyone with blond dreads a drink and he'll introduce you to all the others. (If indeed I'm there, I might be on the road back to sheffield by then).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What about doing it a bit earlier, so that we can all sit in the sun wearing sunglasses so u can't see how scared i look so we can all look really cool!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i think earlier better also (as long as it's after the grand prix).

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

pub will probably have the grand prix on unless there's some really important horse racing.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

earlier would be better as trains suck on sunday. what time does boring grand prix end?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the least boring on the programme - Monaco!

I probably won't be able to come, too busy being a godmother at a christening and drinking bubbly in St Margarets.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Earlier would definitely be better for me as if it's late I wont be able to make it due to the lack of trains on a Sunday. I think pick a pub where they show the grand prix, i was always partial to f1, but lost all interest when Schuey kept winning everything.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey Charlie, I might pop along if I get back from Portsmouth at a reasonable time i.e. if Rob throws me out with all my possessions earlyish.

But have fun if I'm not there anyway.

/end non-absenteeism

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

''it's the least boring on the programme - Monaco!''

you've got a point.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so what's the deal then & whereabouts is it?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

here

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers Ed, pint was it? Any particular time?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

uh huh, cheers all!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

since its a sunday how abt if the time was, say, 4 pm.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

but wait it sez the local competition is a "pub-cum strip club"

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 29 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds enchanting

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 29 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am happy to show up reasonably early if others are.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 May 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I belive at the picnic in the sky some ilxors went into the Griffin (pub/strip club) in search of loos.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the tubes are indeed alright over the top of the circle etc at weekends until the summer ends (probably next week then)

I'll be drinking bubbly with Vic, but then hey, I don't like pubs that are desperately trying to be bars ;o) Griffin though = Pub fo sho

chris (chris), Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The duke is far from desparately trying to be a bar its just short on soft furnishings and always has been

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 May 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

So is it 4 o/c then?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 30 May 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds good to me. i noticed on my way past last nite (on my way to dalston for some theatre) that you weren't joking about the bike couriers were you ed? the place was rammed.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 30 May 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Its normally quiet on sundays though.

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 May 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

good :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 30 May 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'll aim for 4pm then.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

me too! gulp!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i have nightmare working-at-the-weekend-even-tho-i'm-a-freelancer-oh-ppl-will-pay-wil-PAY-I-TELLS-YOU!! issues, but will maybe make it 4 5-ish (poss)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 May 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, no can do.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll still be in LA dudes

voxtrol kovacevic, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget the Korean restaurant by Suzy's house. (I know, it's not the best one!)

Outdoor nighttime drinking has replaced daytime drinking as my new favorate pasttime.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

reminder bump!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 1 June 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it was nice to meet melissa.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 1 June 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It was indeed - she is lovely, though very quiet - or, more than possibly, we are a gang of loudmouths and she looks extra quiet in comparison. The whole thing broke up a bit early, but I think that's in the nature of a Sunday FAP on the first really hot and clammy weekend of the year.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 1 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like to interrupt people, and have trouble thinking of things to say that would be interesting to anyone but myself.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 1 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry not to make this - ended up being out late on saturday so didn't really move on sunday. it was nice to meet you melissa, sorry we didn't talk more.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 2 June 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''I don't like to interrupt people, and have trouble thinking of things to say that would be interesting to anyone but myself.''

s'OK. same w/me I'd say.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A very pleasant way to end a weekend of house-moving, and nice to meet Melissa.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 June 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i enjoyed it a lot — sorry i wz a bit mute from proofing-shock (too many vodka and tonix = i slept not a wink = i am v.cheap this morning)

also i had a brilliant* idea abt something, but i forget what: was anyone listening when i announced it

*warning: mileage may vary

mark s (mark s), Monday, 2 June 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Highlight: watching the Julio vs Mel Radiohead FITE! played out as a genial comedy.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 2 June 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"I was only there because Skunk Anansie were playing"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 June 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

''Highlight: watching the Julio vs Mel Radiohead FITE! played out as a genial comedy.''

who sez I hate fun.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 June 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

We were disappointed at the absence of any pink panthers at the FAP. Any panthers at all actually, except the kitten of that name in the novel I had with me, as it happened.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Many drinks owed by me to the FAP mini-massive.

It was lovely to meet Melissa; she is a really nice girl and knows more about music than most 19-year-olds really ever should.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 2 June 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I nearly had an FAP with Mooro, so ner.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Torn between filial duty & an outlet village.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch, I hope you get that stitched up Mooro, or it'll never heal.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely there were grey panthXORS?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You should be so lucky! I came down with an awful stomach bug on Saturday eve and consequently spent a very painful Sunday in bed :-(

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

martin - blame me for panthers no show, i wanted to buy fish and go to the zoo rather than go to london as i was a bit tired and sun burnt from the day before, pinkpanther and i will do our best to hit the next one

james (james), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Good!

Yes, Mark and I represented the old people.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

also i had a brilliant* idea abt something, but i forget what: was anyone listening when i announced it

Was it the bit about subtext spoilers?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

po-o-ossibly (none too brilliant-seeming in cold light of wednesday)*

(*shocker)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Martin! Apologies also for the no show. It was weird cos I wanted to send someone a text to say i wont be coming, but it's all diff isnt it?! Anyways, i hope to come along to the next one. Your b/day would have been ideal, but i have to study for the next 2 weeks. :-( keep me informed of what's happening & me & the boy will try our best to make a fap at some point in the near future. :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The birthday thing isn't ideal for a first time anyway to be honest, since there will be a mix of ILXers and my old pals who have nothing to do with the board.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That's even better though - they can guess who is who!

(I will come to the birthday thing if new-house-tidying duties have been fulfilled, Martin, if not happy birthday old-timer)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 5 June 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)
