...but this is pretty funny.

Well it is, but it's three times longer than it needs to be, which is part of the problem with McSweeney's.

Yeah, but I kinda dug that--horrid longwinded DVD commentaries are another symptom of America's decline.

adam (adam), Thursday, 29 May 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's alright, but there's a Lord of Rings commentary w/ "Noam Chomsky" somehwere on there that's even funnier - no link to hand, I'm afraid.

Jamie Conway (Jamie Conway), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It's linked from the Ann and Dinesh one. It is better, actually, but mostly because the author seems to take Chomsky and Zinn seriously enough to do an effective parody. The Coulter/D'Souza one uses a lot more cheap shots and crude caricatures.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 31 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's fairly apparent that whoever wrote the Coulter/D'Souza one hasn't actually read much of them

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 31 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

plus inadvertantly saying zinn/chomsky are the left corrolary to coulter/d'souza or vice versa is a bit unfair to both sides

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 31 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

note how the Chomsky/Zinn one reads a bit like mark s does on the Tolkien threads.

not really

McSweeney's football picks, on the other hand, are the highlights of my week from September through January.

Jeff Johnson's picks are a thing of wonder

ten years pass...

Still seems to be basically the same dynamic where the web stuff is kind of stupid, but the actual magazine sometimes publishes great short fiction. I really enjoyed "Raw Water" by Wells Tower. Actually I always seem to like Wells Tower stories. Maybe I should get his book.

seven years pass...

I stopped in to say "how did a thing that I remember as one of the best small-press literary magazines somehow turn into an extremely normie collection of Borowitz-level humor columns that you see other middle-aged people link to on Facebook," but looking at this thread, maybe this happened a long time ago?

I submitted a couple of things to the website circa 2000 or 2001 because it seemed like they were publishing a lot of short pieces that were just kind of random/quirky and frankly didn't seem all that hard to pull off (although mine weren't actually accepted). The website has always been very different from the magazine.

Like, I haven't read it in years, but I feel like the website's early days were animated by a spirit of "hey, it's the Internet, we can put up whatever weird stuff we like!" that was fun and novel at the time and has probably since calcified into a recognizable hackneyed style.

You are bringing me back to a time in my life when decorative gourd season motherfucker felt fresh

an extremely normie collection of Borowitz-level humor columns

Apt comparison in that a friend shared a “Fran Liebowitz’s Amazon Reviews” parody and people weighed in in the comments assuming it was real.
