FCC deregulation scheduled for next monday

It looks like the FCC is going to further deregulate media consolidation laws next monday. They plan to boast television broadcast saturation from 35% to 45% in a market. Cross ownership laws are on the chopping block too, so TV networks can buy newspapers and radio stations and vice-versa. I've barely heard a peep out of any media outlets about this, except for a couple of newspaper editorials and Bill Moyers.

So is anyone else as frightened as I am? Whatever happened to media companies being trustees of the public airwaves? One nation under Fox?

Discuss.

Hasn't most of this kind of thing happened already? I would be more outraged if I wasn't so clearly unsurprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i've gone past the point of being easily outraged anymore, because it just. keeps. happening.

it does, however, make me sad. which changes nothing. which makes me even sadder. this could be said of any number of world events and/or governmental policies, however. :P

There's been a decent upswelling of agitation about this, but it's not really poked through to news media at all. (By the way, if you're bothered by the extended deregulation please bask in the pleasure of having the NRA agree with you for once.)

gee what a coincidence that the major news outlets haven't covered this.

Basking... The only other time this happened was when I voted for a local third-party candidate who believed that high schools should have mandatory gun training classes similar to drivers ed.

Well, it was briefly covered on CNBC today. But they weren't presenting Rupert Murdoch or Clear Channel as axes of evil.

And then the Washington Post this past Sunday ran a small sampling of letters to the FCC for and against deregulation. What really chilled me was the man who groused against the supposedly "liberal media" and believes that reregulation is a plot to dismantle the Fox media conglomerate.

And that man's name was...BILL...O'REILLY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I sent emails to my congressmen... both Democrats, one of whom voted for it. Brilliant.

Irony overload.

I wrote my congressmen too. But, for some reason I don't think Mitch "filibuster campaign finance reform" McConnell isn't going to take it very seriously.

Dale the Merciless (cprek), Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a moment like that awhile ago. now i can't remember what it was i was so incensed about, but i started to write a letter to Henry Hyde and really couldn't make up my mind whether or not it was worth even trying. he probably wouldn't even read it. :P

janni (janni), Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mitch McConnell can eat a bag of dicks. God I hate that guy AND his dumb wife.

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a little amazed that further deregulation is even possible. Fox News in 2005 = UNICRON.

I'm going to buy FOXXX and turn just run constantly refreshing ILX new answers page while playing the foxtrot behind it.

Ted Turner speaks out.

If you think this media deregulation is a bad idea without more public input into the decision, call Michael Powell's FCC office today to let them know.
