If you're trying for tomorrow...hm. Get up really early, at least, and definitely check with Spencer in terms of when you want to meet up so you can make it to the dinner properly. Amtrak does have southbound trains leaving at 6:05, 7:20 and 8:30 in the morning from Union Station and return trains back that arrive at 4:05, 5:45 and 6:45 in the afternoon (and as with all trains, there are always possible delays, so I would not recommend that last one given tomorrow night's plans). But it's really tight -- if you left Union Station at 7:20 and returned by 5:45, you'll only just barely have five hours in San Diego itself. At that rate all I could suggest would be a quick swing through downtown, seeing the Coronado/San Diego bay bridge (which I think is a seriously lovely bit of architecture and engineering), maybe an hour or two wandering through Balboa Park -- the Zoo is fantastic but deserves much more time than you'll be able to give it, so skip it and head towards the late 19th century Exposition buildings and the various museums (trivia -- some of the 'stock footage' of Xanadu in Citizen Kane comes from those buildings and the zoo). Ultimately, your call.

An apparent military plane has crashed into a residential area, sparking at least one house fire, according to preliminary reports.
The pilot apparently ejected from the aircraft, but there is no report on his condition.
Eyewitness Shelby Lovitt, a senior at University High school, said she heard a loud boom just before noon and then saw a plane go down. She said she also saw someone eject from the plane with a parachute. She ran out into field and saw black smoke and flames.
The school had been put on lockdown and no one is allowed to leave, she said.

Whoa, weird to see the Cherry Bomb show up on here. I live two blocks from there, directly in the flight path.
I learned this week that El Cajon has its own microbrewery now and its beers are named after the things that make El Cajon El Cajon: drug dealing (Shady Lane Pale Ale), jail (Breakout Stout), racism (Rowdy Redneck Red), prostitution (Back Alley Blonde), and unemployment (Overhopped and Underpaid American Wheat Blah Blah Whatever).

Harder to navigate than LA w/out a car, true? If I go it should just be for 2 days, for the zoo, Padres, and gay bars?
― son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)
timely! I'm going to be there this weekend but will be at a wedding on Saturday. Not sure what I'm up to on Sunday.
― mh, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)
Zoo + Padres + Gay Bars are all fairly near each other, you wouldn't need a car imho.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 20:53 (eleven years ago)

Familiar with the Doubletree in Mission Park? How close is it to Hillcrest?
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 15 June 2014 02:19 (eleven years ago)
Do you mean over by the mall and the cheesecake factory? You could get a cab from there. Not really walkable unless you want a hike
― polyphonic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 02:25 (eleven years ago)
yeah in San Diego terms it is practically IN hillcrest (ie less than five minute drive) but in walking terms it is a serious hike
― the late great, Sunday, 15 June 2014 02:28 (eleven years ago)
OK. How easy is it to get a cab or ride the trolley?
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 15 June 2014 02:35 (eleven years ago)
Trolley would be good for going downtown, but not Hillcrest.
― polyphonic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 02:42 (eleven years ago)
Seems like there would be plenty of cabs around there, or Uber.
Huh, lived for a year in Utah Street, between University Heights and Normal Heights, had no idea it was hip. My favorite shop was the bookstore on Adams Avenue. Bought way too many great books for 3 bucks, had to pay so much for overweight when I went home...

$42 for the bloody Zoo, huh? Sounds like a July 5th activity.
― son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 June 2014 21:10 (eleven years ago)
^Make that $46.
There's no reason not to go to the zoo on July 4, I guess, since it's open and Saturday the 5th will be as busy or worse? I think the orgasm of patriotism at a Padres game on the 4th would kill me, too.

jayne's gastropub is great!
neighborhood is a burger place, very good burgers and a good selection of beers
monkey paw has great pulled pork sandwiches

hamilton's is my fave SD joint, the sort of place i wish was in L.A.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:27 (eleven years ago)
it seems like monkey paw has been scaling back their tap list in favor of their own beers, which i haven't really tried. they almost always have some good bottles in the case though.
neighborhood looks like it has a better tap list right now but for me the pulled pork beats out the burger
if you can make it to hamilton's though ...

but if that's your benchmark, it is low.
Dr. Morpheus, Neighborhood is good and near PetCo.
