(sorry, don't want to break the train love -- for people who can't download 220k in one go, can i just point people to the "Hide images" option in user settings. It works v well - converts the image to a link with the filename I might look into seeing if it can also display the filesize easily. right, about your business)

This morning on the way to work I drove beside some sleeper cars for a while. The train was a very bright silver - shiney and new looking. It made me happy - a nice way to start the day.

Ed: There's something about that first picture of yours that is utterly mesmeric - something about the colours and the composition - it's stunning.

Caitlin: Orange really suits you!

Is that one of the nuclear fuel trains at Blaenau Ffestiniog?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 30 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh Ed's first post cannot be topped really - absolutely gorgeous

stevem (blueski), Friday, 30 May 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest, if the date that was given for the photo I posted is right, it can't have me on it. I'm not sure that it is right, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 30 May 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that one of the nuclear fuel trains at Blaenau Ffestiniog?

Two points to Caitlin.

There should be a Blaenau FAP.

The C&O used to go right by my house in Virginia. One summer this guy was riding them and killing people on the stops. I had a hard time going to my car that summer.

The latest crop of UK train designs are so universally uninspiring.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 1 June 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Either the TGV or this was the last good train design in Europe.

Those crazy germans!

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as crazy as a deltic diesel, it took a very stoned , james and I a long time to get our heads around how a deltic works. Now that is a true pice of crazy elegant engineering.

Working it out took a trip to the National Railway Museum, a very enjoyable day out, and its free to get in now.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, it reminds me slightly of the Paget locomotive; an experimental design built by the Midland Railway around 1900.

(the Paget design was kind of like a steam equivalent of a Deltic in one way, with lots of cylinders that had two pistons each, but with each directly acting on the loco axles)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The last time I saw a Deltic locomotive in operation, people were crowding round to take photos through the engine-room windows, because you could see the plaque that said "Napier Deltic" on the engine casings.

My mad ex-flatmate's brother-in-law's job involves looking after Deltic engines; he's a Marine Engineering Mechanic on a ship in the Navy.

Incidently, VIA Rail have the nightstar carriages that were meant to run overnight international services between london, Manchester, Scotland and Europe. They run on the renaissance service between montreal and toronto I believe.

http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/pix/gb/car/Nightstar/renaissance_tr22.jpg

Ed (dali), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They run on the renaissance service between montreal and toronto I believe.

Could be, they just started overnight service between us. Should be interesting cause otherwise the Windsor/Toronto/Montreal corridor is absolute hell, worse then an aircraft. Been meaning to try it as an excuse for a week trip to Montreal. Price and promotionwise though it seems aimed at business travel sadly.
(Please don't mind me while I attempt to resize that beast up there.)
