Cranes C/D and is it weird to like them as much as I do?

Right, I'm coming clean: I love cranes. I think they're amazing pieces of machinery (did you know they self-build?!), quite beautiful in the way that they look like huge birds bending and pecking over the skyline and comforting, too, in as much as they are signs of a living city, working, building and growing. Yup, I really like them. However, several people I've told about this think it's incredibly odd, not least a couple of women I've been on dates with... anyone else share my enthusiasm?

what do you mean they self build?

robin (robin), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The big tower cranes can be used to erect themselves, pretty essential and damn clever if you ever watch them doing it.

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Big cranes build themselves, they have a mechanism whereby they add sections to their towers piece by piece, not requiring another crane or anything else to build them... a wonder of modern engineering and, I put it to you all, classic!

I walked past the Gherkin last night and was wondering how they managed to get the cranes that bloody high! This thread has relieved me of the need to ask.

Liebherr Tower Cranes

I wanted a liebherr fridge but they stopped making the one that was the right size for my flat.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i was all ready to talk about how much i love their first album, but then i thought, nah, he's probably talking about the bird. boy was i wrong!

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

at the risk of sounding stupid,i still don't really understand how this works
do you leave the compact crane wherever, push a button, and it unfolds,or what?
i imagine it like those mattresses on the infomercial

robin (robin), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but scott they are great and i'd have put the musical cranes on ilm (agree, 1st album v good, btw)... and robin, no, they have a hydraulic system which raises the gantry, supports it and allows further sections of tower to be added which can be lifted and put in place by the crane itself - requires an operator but nothing more

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cranes scare me. I keep thinking they'll fall over, I know its all physics but HOW DO THEY STAY UP!!!??

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're great. Me & the boy saw one the other day & watched it for ages whilst it dropped it's erm thing (???) down to pick something up. We had a running commentary on it too!

(I'm constantly amazed by the structural similarity of the mechanical crane to the avian creature crane...is that why they call mechanical cranes cranes?)

i work in wapping, east london, but have had a few days off. so i would just like my fellow enthusiasts that a brand new, mo-foin' MASSIVE crane has been added to docklands skyline. and get this - a friend of mine called me this weekend to let me know that he was standing watching a crane lifting up a TRUCK(!!!) in brooklyn... boy do i wish i was there to see that. nick, i have also often pondered the similarities between cranes of both the mechanical and avian varieties, but i'm not sure of the answer. will have to find out...
