Donuts?

I was just in our company kitchen and someone brought in two boxes of dunkin' donuts. And none were eaten! I think I work with too many sad middle-aged women who try to stay fit so they can look young and wear mini-skirts. whatever, I'll eat their donuts for them.

So, what's your favorite kind of donut?

Samantha, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll answer me first. I have to go with the classic chocolate glazed. That chocolate on top is about 90% sugar. yum!!

Samantha, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

banana cream

anthony, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like donuts filled with either jam or custard. I'm a simple man.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Dunkin' Donuts butternut doughnuts are FANTASTIC. However, I've gotta give it up for all varieties of KRISPY KREME. UUUUUUMMmmm.

Dan Perry, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The ones with the sugar and the raspberry or strawberry jam inside are the best ones.

Ally, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Nick, a donut is a wonderful thing, so keep it simple, plain jam, or even better good vanilla custard, yum.

cabbage, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Without hole and with plum jam.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry, what am I thinking, donut = doughnut, please

cabbage, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both spellings are acceptable.

Samantha, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doh... nut. Pine... nut. Macadamia... nut. Wal... nut. Pea... nut. Cashew... nut.

Andy, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DUNKIN DONUTS FUCKIN SUX!!!! I used to have a dunkin donut sin my neighboorhood where they made the donuts on premesis but now they always ship them in from the factory so they SUCK!!!!!! I have thrown donuts into coolidge corner in anger when their taste proved to be bad. I miss teh old DD . Howeveer, I used to lie choco glazed, stick, jelly, french crueller, bston creme

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have never eaten a donut in my life. Nor do I plan to. I was tempted to during my stay in NY, but my friend dissuaded me from stuffing "that crap" in my mouth. I can't remember the last time I ate bread...

nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a jelly donut yesterday for the first time in a few years.

I grew up in New England, where Dunkin Donuts were abundant, and liked 'em. Here in the Bay Area we have Krispy Kreme, but there isn't one in the city, so I haven't tried any. I know people are fanatical for them, tho.

Sean, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Krispy Kreme' is quite possibly the worst name anyone has come up with in 120 000 years of human history. And probably worse than anything Homo erectus came up with either.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally's on the mo-ney with this one...

personally, i think dunkin donuts puts a narcotic in their coffee to keep me coming back every day...

jess, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, what about Haägen Daazs?

nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haägen Daazs? That's marketing genius! Everyone thought it was exotic and icy! It was at least five years before anyone (=me) thought "Hang on - is this just nonsense?"

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe for Americans. For us lot (=Europeans) it just put a frown on our faces. "Haägen Daazs?!? Is this a new language or WHAT?" I need to try some Ben and Jerry when I am in San Francisco.

nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or Frusen Glädjé? link

Dan Perry, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jess , actually its a stimulant called cafeine! Though I think Starbucks fucks DD coffe e in teh arse.

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, well being English, I'm not a proper European so I was fooled. Sounded Swedish or something. Although I did wonder since when Scandinavia was the home of ice cream expertise.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Even I wouldn't have been fooled by 'Frusen Glädjé'. No wonder it's disappeared.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about Godiva Ice Cream? My favourite is Dame Blanche, vanilla with hot chocolate.

nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stoned at 3am in an all-nite Donut hut = classic. Stale sad 2-day old Hostess Donuts sitting on yr office = dud.

Jason, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuck donuts. Gimme muffins.

David Raposa, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just got back from getting my teeth cleaned. I wanted to get some donuts but couldn't. Bother.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will only fuck donuts that already have a hole. I'm not into those cherry filled ones.

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Quite right. We must maintain standards etc..

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is only one type of doughnut. Jam ones. My mouth waters simply typing the phrase jam doughnut.

jel, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Greasy, hole, no jam, from the bloke in the High Street with the bicycle.

Graham, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: Godiva. I like the way it says Godiva for life? Would you like the chance to win a lifetime supply of Godiva ice cream and chocolates? If not for life, how about a year? as if they suddenly lose faith in the appeal of their product halfway through the promotion.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hee hee. " Or how about Godiva for a day? Fuck that , how about NO Godiva! Now there's a treat worth winning! "

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey. They don't half have a lot of different types of 'Donuts' in the United States of America, don't they?

We only have 'ring' or jam. Sometimes apple, sometimes toffee. But never a massive selection. Oh well...

DavidM, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DavidM, don't let them think we've got no Dunkin' Donuts.

Nick, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Something appalling has been going on around here lately--all of the Dunkin Donuts have closed down and some atrocity called "Bakers Dozen" has taken over. Actually, I rarely eat donuts because they're so fatty and I'm trying to maintain my Model physique, but I was still shocked and appalled at the disappearance of the beloved DD, I will not lie. The newest craze 'round here is the opening of a Krispy Kreme--apparently the world's best donut. People wait in line for hours for these beauties. I have not yet had one. Apparently they're to die for. My favorite donut? Plain cake donut, chocolate frosting with sprinkles. Oh yum.

Mandee Wright, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Krispy Kreme's don't do much for me. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I've only had the glazed donuts, they tasted no different from Dunkin' s. My favorites: chocolate glazed from Bess Eaton in New England. Although they've changed the recipe and they stink now. Also buttermilk bars and glazed bearclaws.

Arthur, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gluttony is a deadly sin.

Ronan, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re coffee at Dunkin Donuts; I am not a big coffee drinker, and would hardly think that this would be the place to go for a great cup. However, there is something about the Dunkin Donuts coffee that is extremely addictive, and I don't mean caffeine. I used to live a couple blocks away from one, and would stop in all the time for coffee, and I'm not the type to buy coffee out. A lot of people I knew back east agreed with me--Dunkin Donuts coffee is dangerously addictive! I want some now!

Sean, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, yes! thank you! i can drink two or three larges in a couple of hours. mmmm. coffee.

jess, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like beehive and sugar-covered strawberry-filled pastries, which are not donuts because they do not have holes. Once in awhile I eat a chocolate glazed one but they're so rich the thought makes me feel a little sick right now.

lyra, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You sweet-toothed lot. Give me a packet of cheese and onion crisps any day.

Madchen, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Give me a packet of cheese and I'll be happy for an hour. Then I need MOOOORRRE!

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SAINSBURY'S DIDN'T HAVE ANY DOUGHNUTS THIS MORNING!

jel, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apple fritters from Tim Horton's. Once upon a time, I used to work for one of their stores, and my favourite part of the week was when I'd get to drive down to a local orchard's store to pick up the bushels of apples. It was all cedar panelled in there and that smell mingled with the fresh apples was just incredible. Also I'd occasionally munch on some timbits from the mobile cart whilst transporting them up, via freight elevator, to our mall store in London (Ontario that is). Making jelly donuts is FUN though... you just throw them all into this big drawer full of icing sugar, toss them around, them spike them onto a little machine that injects the goo. That's also the job that hooked me on morning coffee. The bastards. As far as gourmet coffee is concerned though, The Second Cup makes a cappuccino with vanilla sprinkles that I gladly pay four dollars for, nearly every time I get the chance.

Incidentally, there are only two basic types of donut - cake or yeast. The cake is dense and sweet, the yeast is fluffy and bready. example: a choclate iced is probably a doughy plain yeast one with with chocolate icing on top while the chocolate glazed is actually choco cake dough dipped in liquid sugar. There is also plain cake as well as choco and almost all donuts will start with these three bags of mix, done in different ways. ALL donuts are deep fried tho, (a BAKER'S Dozen my ass) can't escape that fact. But, in other words, the cake ones are almost always much, much more evil in terms of calories and fat. In case you wanted to know any of that, that is.

Kim, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't really get the thing with Krispy Kremes, either. They're good and tasty and all, but not that much better than Dunkin Donuts. Then again, I am not unlike that guy in Huysman's Against Nature or Elvis (foodwise, at least) -- I'm so used to eating shit that my tastebuds probably can't distinguish between "good" and "crap" food anymore.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alright, godammit. the only good donuts in the world are available in southern california, at either very small chains (foster's) or indie donut places; most of the places with the best donuts seem to be run by koreans. there were a couple of places in ventura that were open all night and you could show up at 4 am or so and pick up these montsrous chocolate donuts (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting - REAL CHOCOLATE, not that waxy dunkin' donuts shit - and sprinkles and chocolate chips) that were like concentrated holy essence of chocolate donut. not to mention all of the odd 'experimental' donuts they had that ranged from apple fritter/coffee cake combinations to unholy experiments with glazing, chocolate and white cake donuts. fucking brilliant. the only reason i regret moving back east are these beautiful, succulent donuts, because here all you can get are dunkin donuts (fucking terrible - their chocolate donuts are to the aforementioned donuts what slamming your penis in a door is to sexual intercourse) and krispy kreme (which are good if you're in the mood for super-fried, almost-glazed, tiny-ass donuts). fuck!!

your null fame, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I was thirteen I used to eat a half dozen bavarian cream dunkin's donuts everday before school. I can no longer do this and many other things but I still enjoy the occasional bavarian cream donut

hans, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Krispy Kremes used to be limited to the southern united states but they're everywhere now. Up here in New York they're all cute inside with community message boards and stuff, like a Ben and Jerry's scoop store or something. Tennesseans used to the greasy chrome stools and old cigarette smell of their local KK wd be mystified.

Nick, Arthur, Tadeusz: Krispy Kremes are qualitatively different from Dunkin, Honeydew, etc. but you must have them hot to fully appreciate. When you get inside, specifically ask for the hot ones.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gotta give Krispy Kremes marketing people credit, they are running donut sale sponsoring schemes as a way of making a foot hold in Canada. Bloody brilliant but still just as doomed Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins invasion 8 or 9 years ago.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunkin Donuts are ok. Krispy Kremes rule. They are hot, sticky and good. Who can resist the HOT DONUTS NOW sign? My fave flavor is probably plain. Sad, but true. But I'll go for a chocolate glazed now & then.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

There is nothing like a fresh warm Krispy Kreme doughnut...and I officially don't even like doughnuts. My sister claims once she was driving by the one Washington-area KK shop. The "Hot Donuts" sign lit up, and people were jamming on the brakes and making u-turns on Rt. 1 to go in and get some.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 17 October 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

>>>Nick, Arthur, Tadeusz: Krispy Kremes are qualitatively different from Dunkin, Honeydew, etc. but you must have them hot to fully appreciate. When you get inside, specifically ask for the hot ones. <<<

Truer words have never been spoken. Hot KKs simply dominate DD, Honeydew, Tim Horton's, Bess Eaton's, and others in ways not comparable in other facets of life.

Hot, Glazed KK > all other donuts, ever

Have you ever tried the warm donuts anywhere else? Of course they are good. I hope I wasnt the only midnight shift working university student out there who used to leave work at 4 or so in the morning a gorge myself at Tim's. Or walk the drive through during terms at 5 in the morning during all nighters.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I have, most certainly. And yea, hot donuts are always good (for the most part). But KKs have a distinct "melting/exploding/dissolving" quality that is simply not found in other donuts. Not to mention that they're being made all the time. My father (who dislikes them) once compared hot KKs to cotton candy. I find this rather fitting.

So, as stated before, "if you've never had a Krispy Kreme hot, you've never really had a Krispy Kreme".

-who'd like to remind people as a public service that by putting a KK in a microwave for 15 seconds on high, you bring back much of its "freshness"-

one time, a couple years ago, DD had a holiday season donut. It was something like "Apple Crisp". What it was was this: Butternut crunch on the outside (generally my favorite donut ever) and warm apple filling on the inside. It was my favorite and then they took it away.

I also like coconut donut, then regular glazed, then chocolate glazed, then maybe like, blueberry or something, then way at the bottom of the list is chocolate covered or pink goo covered.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know there was a donut thread. I happily note that the lengthiest post is by a Canadian.

1. Blueberry Fritter
2. Chocolate Glazed
3. Dutchie
4. Boston Creme
5. Double Chocolate
6. Honey Dip

Rankings assume that it's a really good one. An excellent Dutchie is better than a mediocre Blueberry Fritter.

Gooey honey-glaze stuff on the outside, raisins, soft doughy middle. Rectangular, no hole, more donut. First discovered them in the early '80s courtesy Larry, I guy I worked with in the public-works department. Possibly a Canadian-only thing, I don't know.
