I'm such a f*cking idiot!

I just used some (magnetic) guitar pickup to fuck up my monitor not realizing that degaussing doesn't work!

Whoa! I just turned it off and on (for the umteenth time) and it fixed itself.

HI, Jon.
What is degaussing?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the button that makes your monitor go sproing.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

degaussing=demagnetising. also called "bulking" when in reference to tapes.

due to natural magnetic buildup, computer monitors will sometimes experience loss of colour purity, and will need to be degaussed, or so i've heard. i've also heard there's a special button to do this, but i haven't seen any on the monitors i've used, so i don't know how prevalent this is.

people who recycle audio and videocassettes will often do this; there are big machines that are essentially gigantic, superpowerful magnets which will erase anything and everything there is on the tapes if the tapes are passed over them a few times.

a second only! and then degauss

i thought this would be a calum thread

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

wishful thinking? :)

janni (janni), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think this was a feature any more, because newer monitors don't need it, or do it automatically on switching on, or something?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

some do, some don't, fewer and fewer do though

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

'sproing' is such a great word.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Does 'degaussing' stop you typing all in capitals? If so I'm all for it.

Haha, my opinions matter a lot!
