FAPS - are you prepared to travel?

Do you travel very far for FAPs? Or would you travel very far for a FAP? It's a fair old trek for me to get to London, but it isn't impossible & I hope to join soon.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I would pretty much have to travel for any FAP. Sarah and I travelled up to Washington DC (about 2 hours) for a FAP with J-lu and Aaron Grossman, though to be fair, we were also visiting my family.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

travelling to London just for a FAP would be prohibitively expensive for me.

however, I do intend visiting London over the summer, and may inquire as to whether anyone wants to FAP with me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto what the vicar said - except that I'm hopefully visiting London next week.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Farrell to thread!

rener (rener), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it would be good to meet you DV.

I am prepared to travel to London to go to a FAP. The thing that stops me going is the fact that they tend to be mid-week, although I have been heartened to find that this isn't the case as much as it used to be. Having said that, there are lots that I still can't make, and I'm ashamed to say that the last London FAP I went to was on the 29th December!

The Oxford FAP a few months ago was attended by three ppl (Marcello, Graham and myself). Two of us lived in Oxford anyway! I'd organise another Oxford FAP if I was sure that more ppl would come.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I just meant travelling in general. i.e. if i wanted to attend a fap, i'd have to travel from cambridge to london as the only other ilxor near me, i live with. pj is fairly close having said that!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The mid-week fap is def a problem for me.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The furthest I'm going purely for a FAP is Brooklyn.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So how far is that from you?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to NYC from London for a FAP.

Well, it was more that I wanted to go to NYC and the FAP was an excellent excuse.

How long does it take to get from Cambridge to London? And why don't you bring PJMiller with you, eh?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm willing to travel quite far. The closest FAP location to me is Minneapolis (Horace in Regina is the closest, but I don't think you can call two guys going for a beer a real FAP, can you? Maybe), which is a seven hour drive from here (Winnipeg), but they don't want me down there **sob sob**! I'm probably going to travel for the NYC FAP, and I may go visit west coast people later in the summer or early fall. I'd be willing to go just about anywhere if I have the time.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought PJMiller lived in Spain.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was amazed on returning from my first FAP to hear that DV has never been to one (that has been fixed since).

I am over-holidayed and only go to places for the people there, which is an advantage in this matter.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes about an hour by train. It's not the end of the world at all as i'd be travelling up with my b/f anyway. I guess I could!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably not...most of the FAPS occur far, far away from where I live and I never seem to have the money or could take the time away from work to attend one.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

where are you Nicole?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the next place overseas which I'll be visiting will probably be Prague and I'm pretty sure there are no ilxers there.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I was amazed on returning from my first FAP to hear that DV has never been to one (that has been fixed since).

I went to one at Glasto last year... or was that a Sinister picnic?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The farthest I'd go is the upper east side. Or maybe Queens. I seriously question the sanity of people traveling long distance to come to NYC on the 4th. Although at least yr getting a trip to NYC out of it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm mainly coming up to visit my sister and do the tourist thing, though the FAP should be fun. But I am insane as well.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm heading to VA that week, Nick. So I'll prolly miss ya. Not sure yet tho.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm insane as well, plus I really like long drives.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the glasto thing was officially "a gathering of the tribes" (in my head anyway).

i aint going south of the river for no FAP (although i used to come down from ox all the time)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going on a monumental months-long road trip this fall, with the intention of circling the whole US, and I hope that a FAP here or there will be part of it. In two years I've yet to meet any ILXers IRL though there are a few who live only minutes away.

chester (synkro), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i aint going south of the river for no FAP (although i used to come down from ox all the time)

Well, that's charming I must say ;-)

South London resident who RARELY if EVER moans - although he has full justificat, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest I'm kinda reluctant to go to any FAP that is further east than centre point. I have a terrible FAP attendence record.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

? what ate the end of Marcello's post?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"he used to com" oh dear oh dear that should have read "he used to come down from ox every fapping day! ahem."

Certified Anger Management Expert, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

if I organised another OxFAP would you come to that?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I went up to Seattle (3 hour drive) for what was, I guess, a weekend-long FAP type thing. It was certainly worth it, though I wouldn't have done it for just one night.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't mind another Oxon FAP but, as with yourself, I'd have to be sure there was going to be a BETTER TURNOUT than last time.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

We should do a FAP at that youngs pub in front of the tate modern, it's south of the river, easy to get to. Not the worlds best pub but it's location can't be beat.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The current FAP trend towards expensive places to drink must be stopped.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not the world's biggest or best designed pub either, but yep, certainly easy for me to get to.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I call the next FAP for the American Bar at the Savoy.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I said this before. (People probably thought I was being sarky.) Everyone says Oxford is a really nice place. Never been. I wouldn't mind visiting sometime, but I still have a difficult home situation to see resolved. And my social phobia about being a large Ugly-Monster. Yes.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww Christine, if you manage to make a fap & if i'm there, we can cower in the corner together!! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Longest so far is three hours driving... to Vancouver to meet up with Anthony last November. ..though I did make sure I went up there to hang with other friends, too, just in case plans fell apart.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if you don't count the month long road trip last year... but that wasn't all just for FAPs.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

CHESTER... we should meet up just to compare notes on road trip plans. Not that I plan to take any major trips this year, but -- as mentioned above -- I did do a drive-around-the-US thing over a year ago, and it would be cool to talk travel anyway.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I had meant to ask you about your trip during the Oly FAP I wasn't at!

I've been trying to make plans to visit an old friend in Seattle; sometime during whatever weekend that finally happens would be a good time to get together, I think.

chester (synkro), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark,
If you organise an Oxford FAP in town (ie not Headington cos I'm lazy) I might be able to come, and drag Rebecca along as well.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther, I am in the Midwest. It's not a big deal, a FAP would be nice one day but it doesn't bother me that there hasn't been a local one.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mutual cowering is probably more fun. :)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Glasgow ILXers to thread!

(i.e. can't even be arsed not travelling to FAP)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

as soon as some one teleports me to the UK im there.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OK to clear up the general sentiment of Yanc3y's post on his behalf: if you are coming to a far away location for some other reason (never been there and touring, visiting someone, etc) then that makes total sense! But to come PURELY for a FAP seems a bit strange.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, thank you ally. didn't mean to offend anyone. (except YOU! YES YOU!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK YOU THEN.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no, not you!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

me?

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, her.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No, them.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Us?

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But when you travel you get to see wonderful things like this:
http://atlas.imagemagician.com/images/flembach/FAP.jpg

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really have to travel beyond the Lower East Side to see scenes quite similar to that, Carey!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Our last three karaoke-FAPs I have travelled as far as about 50 yards from my workplace, so I'm pretty dedicated. (ha, and the Careyoke one I got there a mere 6.5 hours after finishing work!)

I am glad I don't need to go far for FAPs. I would love to go to a NYC FAP someday, but I'm not wealthy enough just to fly over for a couple of hours for a FAP then come home.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but Ally, you have a pinefox and Mark C. on the LES?

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jellybean, I'd love to organise a non-Headington (!) Oxford FAP. How about the 21st June? I think the Angel & Greyhound would make a good venue...a return to the days when it was the pre-SUSSED pub!

It'd be really nice if some London ilxers could make it to this (NB the A&G is convenient for the Oxford Tube as well!)

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, St Clements might not be sufficiently central for you ;)!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

a pinefox and Mark C. on the LES

At last the ILX porno has a plot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

:( 21st June is bad for me, cos I'm spending the whole day drinking in a field in Charlbury...

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Seattle from Vancouver to pay Bryan back for his lovely hosting skills.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinefox! I thought it was Rupert Everett! Forget what I said!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Being in Melbourne the only travelling I've had to do for FAPs is over the river (I had to go into Fitzroy... this is so wrong, do you see? etc)

But I still want to go to Montreal if I ever manage to save any money and there seem to be a few Quebecois ILXers out there. I'd probably swing by NYC while I was at it as well. This is all wishful thinking of course...

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

drinking in a field in Charlbury

is this the Free Festival? If so, I will be too, probably! If it is then, Nightshift missed it off their gig listing (naughty).

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 5 June 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH- u wrong. I'm the ILX rep in Prague! might be the only one though..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 June 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, that's impressive! I won't be there until August or September tho.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 5 June 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the Free Festival?

Yup, it is. Let's have an Oxon FAP there instead, cheap booze, nice outdoors and good music, and that i'm going by myself cos my friends are going to see Deep Purple instead

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 5 June 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

!! Theres members of Deep Purple still alive!?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 5 June 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, Jellybean let's make it a Charlbury FAP. Would Rebecca be interested...are you in contact with her?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Normally, I'd be willing to travel up to Dallas for pretty much anything (saw Duran Duran there the last few times they toured), but right now with my financial situation the way it is, the furthest I think I'd travel is Austin. But Austin's a hip, happening kind of town, and I think it's a fab place for one of these FAPs.

(It involves beer, right? Or at least some kind of alcohol? I don't drink normally. But if the occasion is right, maybe I'd indulge.)

Oh, the things people will do to avoid student loans. ;)

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 5 June 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
MarkH- u wrong. I'm the ILX rep in Prague! might be the only one though

wow, that's impressive! I won't be there until August or September tho.

make that November. I fly out on the 4th, back on the 7th. I'm really excited about it - the only thing that worries me is that I hear that Prague is really polluted and this is particularly a problem in the colder months - I fear I might get all asthmatic and stuff.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nah shouldn't be a problem.. Methinks London, Paris, etc. are much worse. Also I thought pollution was worse during the summer, oder?
