The washing machine is making unusual loud banging noises and it sounds like it is in grave danger of malfunction. Should I get up and turn it off, or just sit here and listen? Ooh, they just got faster.

I would continue listening. More entertainment for less work.

Tape the sound! Mess about with it on a computer. You could be the next Kid 606 or something.

you might as well go ahead and do what's inevitable in this situation.

go open it up. look at your washing covered in suds. have a confused, semi-accusatory look on your face, as if to tell the washing machine that you disapprove of its tantrum.

think, "i'm not taking that mess out. my clothes are sudsy."

close it up. listen as machine goes into linda blair mode.

repeat.

then write a ten page short story about it in the style of raymond carver.

Odds on it's a 10p piece stuck in the drainage pipe. Happens to me all the time (ok twice in the past 10 years).

...that or a small rodent or cellphone. Always happening to me.

Look, that phone thing was an accident. There's no need to keep bringing it up.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just give it a kick. Only language 'they' understand.

DavidM, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go sit on it and have the ride of your life.

Trevor, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vomit on it at once

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's probably just because the clothes all went to one side in the spin cycle. Usually the washing machine will turn itself off in that situation if the load gets too uneven, even on old machines.

maryann, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck you trevor, you beat me to the punchline.

Geoff, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe take the kittens out of it

dave q, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it was jumping up and down and lurching around the floor. very interesting, but i turned it off.

Lyra, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, my washing machine does that too when I have too heavy of a load being washed... it's kind of scary because once it jumped so much I couldn't open the door. Eek.

Mandee Wright, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this thread is really entertaining. I like it.

rainy, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hold on Maria, you're American - what on earth are you doing with a washing machine??

Tom, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...washing my clothes?

maria, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But is it not SCIENCE FACT that no Americans have their own washing machines?
