Food Packaging Conundrum

just had a pack of Walkers Sensations Oriental Crackers. It said on the packet that it was suitable for vegetarians (I'm not) but it also said "This product has been made in a factory that uses egg & shrimp ingredients".

wtf? If there's a danger of contamination with shrimp then the veggies can't eat the product and if there isn't, why tell us?

Any ideas? Or share other food packaging conundra....

Because even trace shrimp contamination would make them non-kosher?

Actually, this makes me think of the ILX Logo debate from a few months back. I've just thought of a good one:

ILX
*warning - may contain nuts

I would guess that the rules for 'suitable for vegetarians' are loose enough to allow meat in the same factory. But shrimp traces offend strict Jews or something.

Ah, Caitlin beat me to it.

but eggs must be kosher, shurely? And why these two things together?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. Milk and (even kosher) meat aren't allowed together but that doesn't really help here.

I don't know much about this. But as far as I can remember, some things are kosher separately but not when mixed together - kosher kitchens have to have different preparation areas for certain differnt types of food.

It's more likely because people can have severe allergic reactions to shrimp & eggs and need to be warned about even the tiniest risk. Isn't it?

I noticed this, very weird. I'd like to know how much of a risk the 'shrimp' contamination is.

Whatever. It seems like good information to have if its the kind of thing that interests or effects you, and doesn't really diminish your enjoyment of the product if it doesn't effect you. In fact, it provided you with a trivial conversation topic.

Magnus is heinously allergic to egg - so I'll feed him some later and see if he puffs up like a cream horn. Then we will know what the risk is.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I think it's allergy info not kosher.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

People have been getting jealousy of the peanut guys getting all the info.

All packaging should say "Packed in a clean factory near some bins" or "Due to the uncertain nature of the world, we cannot guarantee that this product won't kill you."

Pete (Pete), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I had never heard of egg allergy until this day. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

And I know 2 people who have it. So it kind of averages out.
