donna (donna), Sunday, 8 June 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

get to the verse about walking with prince down by the riverside, more spirituals should feature purple funk gonks.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 8 June 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm goin' down in the river,
the one that's cold as ice
I'm goin' down in the river
Lord I'm gonna pay the price
I'm goin' down in it three times
But Lord I'm only comin' up twice.

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 8 June 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

''( im just a tad ANGRY right now and trying to let off steam so any assistance would be appreciated ).''

'anger management' starring adam sandler (such a fine exponent of the comedic arts) has just been released in cinemas. you should see it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 June 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, because Adam Sandler films could never make anyone angier.

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I had me a woman who couldn't be true.
She made me for my money and she made me blue.
A man needs a woman that he can lean on,
But my leanin' post is done left and gone.

She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue.

-Hank Williams

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 8 June 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Hank's delivery of the phrase "A man needs a woman" in that song kills me so bad it's a miracle I can even think about it without dying outright

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 8 June 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

donna i get it stuck in my head too. i've not heard your "heavy load" version, though. the words i know go like this:

"i'm gonna lay down my sword and shield
down by the riverside (down by)
down by the riverside,
down by the riverside!
i'm gonna lay down my sword and shield
down by the riverside,
ain't gonna study war no more (no more)

i ain't gonna study war no more,
i ain't gonna study war no more,
i ain't gonna study war no more!"

The first parenthetical "down by" is ideally done by a man with a really really deep voice.

this song was big with my parents, who are big old hippy SDSers and "community organizers"; it segues pretty nicely with "This Little Light of Mine" :)
