The importance of being a slightly odd individual

I enjoyed the Morrissey programme last night, he seems like an almost likeable bloke, instead of the git I was expecting. Strange cameos by people like shite-peddler JK Rowling too. And Noel Gallagher soooo full of love for him.

Did you see?

yeah. funniest bit => the commercial for that goth 80s CD.

The best bit was when the vegetarian issue came up (not that controversial now) and how that was given much more time than the 'racism' issue. Noel gallegher logic on this was quite something (''why should he respond? we all know he isn't racist'' Um, no actually).

I have yet to see the last half, but he seemed like a bit of a berk to me...a likeable berk yes, but I'm glad when I was 15 I saw the Smiths South Bank Show and not that, it could have been traumatic

I saw it and was happy to see the old codger back on his feet. I like the way I feel so tremendously fond of him but don't want to be his friend. THIS IS A MAJOR STEP.

My favourite bit was when he said: 'Not everyone is entirely stupid, you know?' in typical waspish Morrissey style.

His house was manky though - what was with the dilapidation? and I think he could have pushed the boat out a little further for Nancy Sinatra. Some Chocolate Hob-nobs perhaps?

berk = rhyming slang

berkshire hunt = Cnut

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

... but its usage is much gentler than that, closer to 'fool' or something.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

is that true chris? yipes

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim = otm of course, for instance my Mum would be horrified if I was ever heartless enough to tell her the origin of the tame little word she uses.

yes Steve it certainly does = true!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason we don't pronounce it 'bark', though.

I thought the programme very bad, in some ways, as I have said on another thread.

It almost made it harder to listen to his records, which from my POV is a bad thing.

There is a problem of genre: so many documentary-makers seem unable to let a piece of interview linger for more than about 10 seconds. 'Thinking' on screen - of the kind that might happen if someone *responded* to any of the interviewees' remarks, and sought a response in return - is not shown: we just hear 'ideas' we already know.

There are other problems too. On the whole, I think M made a mistake in letting them film him.

PS / The Nipper is quite right to say, elsewhere, that Paul Morley should have been in charge of the whole thing.

i quite liked it. i mean as hagiography they are never going to cover the racism stuff to any extent, otherwise they wouldn't have got the access.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

'Racism stuff' I think a dull herring. Coverage of that, or lack of it, was not why the programme was bad.

Calling someone (who writes songs which often use the device of inhabiting a character waaay other to most listeners in a really schizoid way) a racist and then hounding them to prove they're not is not fair play at all.

OTM.

'''Racism stuff' I think a dull herring. Coverage of that, or lack of it, was not why the programme was bad.''

Morrissey does like his 'controversy' (as he said in the doc) so its reasonable to ask questions abt how far he's going to take that.

It was just amausing that the programme makers just felt the need to ask a quick question and then insert a moronic comment from noel gallagher and leave it at that.

having said that, i don't think it was a mistake. how much damage can be done by that doc?

''Calling someone (who writes songs which often use the device of inhabiting a character waaay other to most listeners in a really schizoid way) a racist and then hounding them to prove they're not is not fair play at all.''

has he really been 'hounded'?

personally, I don't think he is racist and I'd say that even if he was I wouldn't throw my smiths tapes in the bin as I love those songs.
