No, that was much longer ago.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 9 June 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometime between yesterday and a while back?

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

'The other day' can be ANY time in the past (within the lifetime of the speaker). BUT should only be used when the time of the event in question has NO bearing on the point being made.

ts: "back in the day" vs "back in the other day"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I try to restrict its use to events that occurred within the last few weeks. Otherwise I feel a bit of a fraud.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

feel other bits of the fraud please

mark s (mark s), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Since pretty much every anecdote I ever tell is slightly fictionalised anyway, I do not feel a(ny more of a) fraud.

My brain seems to memory-file things on an event-basis system rather than a chronology-based system, so often I find myself referring to something as having happened "the other day" (which is a phrase I attempt to use regarding only things happening within a shorter chronological period, such as a week) when it actually occurred as far as 6-9 months ago (but my brain doesn't acknowledge this, as it's accessing the memory-file via it's event-based data-gathering system, rather than the chronological system). Then someone will say "when did this happen?", and upon firing up the chronological file-search, I realize it didn't actually occur "the other day", and I have to admit my error to he/she with which I was interacting.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

there are only 3 days, the other day, today, and someday, representing past, present and future respectively...

kevin (unclegrumpy), Thursday, 12 June 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

feel other bits of the fraud please

I know exactly what Mark means. I am troubled by this.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 12 June 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I know exactly what Mark means.

now how can you be so certain of this?

Aaron A., Thursday, 12 June 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin, there is a great Willie Nelson song on that theme, approximately. "...three days, filled with pain and sorrow - yesterday, today, and tomorrow."
