Euro Referendum before next election still a faint hope?

Gordon has just sat down. The best news of the speech was that a draft referendum bill will be introduced in the autumn and that the tests will be re-evaluated in march. No real measures about forcing conergence, but I guess that was too much to ask. At least they are going to move us on to the EU/G8 inflation measure so at least our inflation will be comperable with that of the eurozone.

Euro entry as soon as possible please.

He talked about the end of currency volatility. That's a definite plus. It would certainly make shopping easier for the tourists that visit Britain---no change jingling in the pockets. Though I can see the benefit to the larger corporations, how will the small companies benefit? Increased traffic?

I don't think that there's even a faint hope that there'll be a referendum before the next election. I think it's almost certain that Lithuania will join the euro before the UK does.

This is assuming that the Government has a hope in hell of winning a Euro referendum in this Parliament or next, which lets face it, they don't. Yes I know this is partly their own fault etc etc, but even without their feeble attempts at advancing the case/allowing the Eurohysteric press to get the upper hand, it still looked like an uphill struggle.

Euro referendum before next election = no Euro ever, essentially. I think it would be very, very difficult for this or any government to lose the thing and then attempt to push forward at some later date.

referendum paving bill = sop to pro-Euro members of the cabinet to ensure unity. i very much doubt we will actually have a referendum this Parliakent

(Parlia*m*ent)

that apart, the CHX's statement was a total non-surprise. Treasury leaked to the Financial Times months ago that 4 out of 5 tests would be "failed"

on the news tonight, they were making a big deal of the differences between the housing market in the uk and the countries of the Eurozone and saying that there needed to be a move to fix-rate mortgages here so the market could be more stable.

Does anyone think we should all spam the Daily Mail referendum with anti-referendum, pro-Euro votes, just to annoy them?
