Beckham, that is. But where? And why?

I get the feeling he's going to draw the shit straw and end up at an Intertoto-bound, Europeless Barcelona whether he likes it or not.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think he'll go to Real.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who makes Barcelona's kit?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the wrong people, if he goes with sponsors it's Real or AC Milan.

Milan are out due to their sponsor being a rival of vodafone which just leaves Real I'm afraid.

I think he may stay.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Milan could buy Vodafone out of their deal with Beckham.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

barcelona

ha! ha! barca are shit!

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

depending on that fella winning the election.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

matthew makes me sad

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you want to happen at barcelona Cabbage?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see Beckham there, running the game from the centre of midfield, spraying passes to Luis Enrique (who needs someone to help him run things now he's getting on a bit), knocking balls over the top for the little rabbit to chase, and best of all, I think Beckham would work fantastically with Kluivert.

They then need to attract about three blooming good defenders who don't mind not being in the champions league for a year.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Although it does help United get around the rather embarassing possibility of being put out of the Champions League by a well-placed Beckham free kick.

Which is a shame, as it'd be really, really funny.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Next season, that is.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

plus I think the blaugrana would really suit him.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it is difficult to imagine barca having the same godawful luck going on like's the case for leverkusen and leeds. besides, i've been rerading stroes that ac milan are so confident of this fella not winnign the election that they'll be able to get becks on a cut price of about £20m.

but chris, it would be amusing so see him being sold, after all this incessant reporting on serious news channels, that the most famous fotballer in the world was out of the champs league for a year, heading to a team with limited resources an a squad, judged against their own impressive past, who are deeply average in european terms.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

he's just the type of guy to pull them up by the bootstraps, and I reckon they'll get Jaap Stam too, which may do them some good

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a gay icon. I'm a gay icon, wow, for some reason I can just picture him wearing Sporty's G string while frying bacon in the morning, too funny. Same article also describes him as "They are the new Ben Affleck and J-Lo. They were just so amazing — totally tasteless but glam and so bling, bling, bling."

I love papers in Canada trying to describe him, he gets and extra bling even.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Victoria = posh, I know this yet I still mix up my spice girls. I need more coffee.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

of course if he was at barca for a year this would mean:

a) him playing less matches
b) getting used to the iberian weather

which is just what we need for euro 2004 surely! sell the whole bludy england team to barca!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

According to Julie Burchill today he isn't leaving because of United or Alex Ferguson or anything but actually because he's been "grotesquely, massively, pussy-whipped by his talentless ambition-hound of a wife".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but she was quoting Alex Ferguson.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 June 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as she puts out, otherwise you know where she can go.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Burchill thing is moronic. The evidence she cites is that Victoria cracked jokes about him learning to bounce rather than kick balls to play in the US, and playing James Bond. Burchill then claims this shows he is following her agenda! Until he joins the NBA and starts starring in movies, she is plainly talking nonsense.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

About bloody time. Never have I read as much shite about a footballer, a manager and the business of football as in the national press over the last few weeks.

I think my favourite was the Mirror last week which had a picture of Alex Ferguson on holiday on the cover and a story which went along the lines of "Look at evil Alex Ferguson daring to smile on holiday while his club cruelly sells brave England captain David Beckham behind his back".

All the bullshit has reinforced my feeling that we're doing the right thing in getting rid. He's been a superb player for United, given his all 90% of the time and a part of me is very sorry to see him going. But he's not the most important player at United, never has been. And from the moment David Beckham the marketing tool and global icon became more important than David Beckham the footballer it was time to let him go and get some money in for new players.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

im not entirely sure that burchill is meant to be read literally martin.

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is she published literally then?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

im not entirely sure that burchill is published literally

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a touch sad he is leaving our game and Britain in general but i know who will take his mantle with aplomb
