haha YES I am on my university's UC team, but I am the reserve. This makes me very cross indeed as I had planned to take over the world with a hypnotised army of zombie BBC2 viewers* but instead I will have to sit on the side and sulk unless one of the team members has an 'accident'. Grr.

Still I get a free trip to Manchester out of it and FREE BOOZE yum yum

*there's another kind of BBC2 viewer? har har etc

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

at least I will find out if Manchester really does have so much to answer for

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

So.... what kind of accident are you planning?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ha well knowing my luck if I write evil stuff here something *really* bad will happen to them and I'll get the blame...I dunno, perhaps one of them will get a cold or something so I can tank up on BOOZE and swear at Paxman

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well done, anyway. How does the application process work? Do you know any of the others on the team or did you just reply to a call for brainboxes?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the latter...about 60 people turned up to the heats and I beat all but the four who got on the team *shakes fist*

I get £200 worth of book vouchers for my troubles as well, hurrah

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

a prize worth having

(loads sock with stones and heads east )

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still chuffed that at the Granada interview/assessment the chap from Imperial College sat next to me in the quiz didn't know who the creator of Garfield was...so much for the Russell Group

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I am biting down hard to refrain from quoting the entirety of a certain episode of a certain show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I toyed with applying for the Birkbeck team this year, but since they were such brainy winnerz last year I thought no.

Every year the SOAS team never gets in - due to annoying euro/science centrism of questions. Bah!!!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I am biting down hard to refrain from quoting the entirety of a certain episode of a certain show.

geez I know what you mean...why do you think I applied?

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

somewhere deep in the ancients vats of ilm is my transcript of the university challenge question on dance-music genres

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

geez I know what you mean...why do you think I applied?

Brilliant. Succeed -- and give us something else to quote. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That was Liz D's college's team IIRC.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

heh thee Paxman had better be nice to me or I'll get FatNick to kidnap him and we'll ask him impossible questions which he must answer to be let free, and we'll be all like "oh COME ON Jeremy, SURELY you can do BETTER than THAT" etc etc

DG (D_To_The_G), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha it was London Met VS St John's, Oxford, and they got beat 235-175, and they didn't like it up 'em that's fer sure

I'd like to think that when it goes out there'll be all these twats sitting at home, chortling at the team from the newest university in the country - who are doing subjects like Irish Studies and Information Management and who are no doubt about to get whipped by a bunch of Classics students from Oxford - then feeling a bit silly 25 minutes later

DG (D_To_The_G), Saturday, 14 June 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you get on? I assume not, from the brief account. Will you stay first reserve for the next round?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ah well I'll be on telly in the audience shots, not the quiz though :(

I'll still be reserve unless someone drops out...hmm...

DG (D_To_The_G), Saturday, 14 June 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
well I got on telly though only in the audience, my face was obscured by the 'production assistant' (or something) credit but i could make out my big fat nose so all was cool in the end

Paxman walks with a limp as well, though that's nothing to do with me

DG (D_To_The_G), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

he's been hit with a few shells

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe he's doing a gangsta walk.

jed (jed_e_3), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

twelve years pass...

Only Connect were saying about getting teams to apply.

O, what you reckon, ilxors?

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2016 21:06 (nine years ago)

Not me, I can't spell "So"

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2016 21:07 (nine years ago)

I know of an ilxor who appeared as a contestant on university challenge #enigmatic

Cuombas (jim in glasgow), Monday, 4 January 2016 21:11 (nine years ago)

There have been a few, yes.

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2016 21:43 (nine years ago)

I seem to remember the ilxor that was this year's 15 To 1 champion trying to drum up enthusiasm last year and failing. I mean I'd be up for it but I don't think anybody else was.

suffeeciant attreebution (aldo), Monday, 4 January 2016 22:10 (nine years ago)

my mate was on OC (don't call it that) so I'd just look like I was copying

kinder, Monday, 4 January 2016 22:24 (nine years ago)

I have applied for Only Connect with real life people now. Well, when I say applied I mean we've half-filled out the application form and it's lying in my house until I can be arsed filling in the rest of it.
