this happens a lot:

person A: I am playing a recording of music I like, you can hear it too.
person B: this is very depressing/this makes me want to slit my wrists/this is slit-your-wrists music.
person A: ...

OK if person As are playing something that actually sounds depressing at all.

but person Bs [who usually profess to 'not like music much'] can/will say this about almost ANY music.

why do they bother?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

why do we bother with any rote human interaction at all?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, that, then.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Horace I've been asking myself that all day

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

So hows about dem Bears?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

man Horace and J0hn don't be so depressing!

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well, nobody wished me a happy birthday.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Is today your birthday? I wish you good tidings even if it isn't.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

you might not be a person B, horace mann, but fuck you.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have every sympathy Horace. Happy, happy birthday *modest cough*

with regard to the question, I don't know why they bother. but I think it is often kindly meant.

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

DUMP IT!

Aaron A., Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

meant kindly?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I often wonder why people who profess to know *nothing* about something are so often so belligerently opinionated about that same thing. My friend John's like this. His idea of a discussion is shouting me down until my face goes red and I give up trying to reason with him.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it was my birthday on Sunday. I didn't know how to say "hey, it's my birthday" without feeling like I was fishing for HBDs. So I thought I'd do it passive-aggressively and try to make everybody feel bad.

Anyway, Person B is trying to sound like they know what they're talking about. Trying to say, "in my gut, I don't like this, but I don't feel comfortable saying that to you, because you know more about this and might not consider my feelings valid unless I make them slightly derogatory."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It was my birthday last December and I STILL haven't had any birthday greeings from ILX.

GET OVER YOURSELF!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

We share a birthday, Horace! That means we must share everything else, as proven by the science of astrology. Are you middle aged, funny shaped and balding? Not yet?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

no, person B is not crediting person A with any more 'knowledge'/whatever. they are just saying "you have bad taste." their 'taste' is not up for discussion. they are unwilling to discuss. the most they might say is "I like dancey music."

"I don't know much but I do know that that is crap."

happy birthday, lara.

martin, I don't believe you're middle-aged. thou doth protesteth tooth mucheth.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

He might never be if that's the way you're painting things Martin!

Um, what's funny shaped meant to mean? I am imagining you as an edgy parallelogram with stripes.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Marigold Swiss vegetable bouillon powder rocks. It is without doubt an ingredient
that has revolutionised modern cooking. ur all gay.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard, I am 44. You are only legally entitled to three score and ten (it says in the Bible) so once you pass 35 you're middle-aged. QED.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

So in a mere seven years time I'm going to be dying my hair blond and lying about my ages to go on club 18-30 holidays???

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The interaction betw. Person A & B is almost verbatim a conversation I had while painting college dormitories for a summer job. I put on The Sea and Cake's The Fawn as good music to paint to: not too edgy but with good bubbly rhythms. And so a few minutes into it, this guy I'm painting with gives me the "slit-my-wrists" comment -- which totally took me by surprise. It had never occurred to me to think of the record as depressing -- bittersweet, sure, but certainly not slit-your-wrists.

But then that made me realize that although I recognize music as sad or melancholy, rarely does that translate to "depressing" and thus "painful" or "bad." On the contrary, I think I often gravitate toward "sad" music (minor chords) because it just seems more beautiful somehow. That is, in a superficial way (not in a goth way).

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Birthday Horace Mann, and Lara for last December.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

One day ILE will drown in a sea of birthday greetings. This model isn't scaleable.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, of "Hello. This is God speaking. Here I am. I created the universe."

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy birthday & many happy returns to Horace, responsible for some of the most uncontrollable giggling I've had in the past year! Thank you for that & many happy returns of the day!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)
