I bought Gucci shoes today.

I'm quite astounded by the fact that I now have them in my possession. I'm not particularly label conscious (when it come to clothes in any case) but I do admire certain shoe-makers for their style.

Are you a designer junkie? What labels are poking out of your wardrobe?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Made in Taiwan" mainly, I suspect.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

zing!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

LARA STOP NOW.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you really see into my bedroom? How unsettling...

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it would be OK.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I always look for the Made In Cambodia label, myself.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe that would be a better question - travel the world with the labels off your clothes!

I actually have some stuff from Cambodia and plenty from Vietnam - but I bought them directly from the street thieves.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Who knew this was a Lara thread before they opened it? Me, that's who. And possibly N.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and?

I like JCPenney.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

N. just thinks he knows.

I managed to stay away from BTs for a whole day and them succumbed - *whispers* I bought two pairs from Bertie and one from Pied a Terre too.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

how much money do y'all make?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think everyone is beautiful in one way or another

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

money?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! I make no money that's why I look for the Made In Cambodia label at thrift and discount stores.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i take it saturday didn't quite pan out?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a special fund for shoes to the detriment of other expenditure. I have to pretend to have a lactose intolerancy to avoid the embarrassment of not being able to afford milk, butter or cheese.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have a special funds for holiday, clothes and going out. Revolving credit is a beautiful thing, ladies and gentlemen!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking a gygax! I didn't take home a red fucking cent on Saturday. Goddamn Ten Most Wanted, grumble grumble.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, this could've been a me thread just as easily. CONGRATULATIONS Lara and fuck all the haters. YES it's silly and ridiculously expensive and we should have given the money to charity but man new shoes can make you feel amazing. It's seriously like drugs sometimes.

Pleeeeease Lara tell me all about them.

I have a pair of knee-high Gucci motorcycle boots. They are so beautifully made, from the design to the construction. They are super pointy with a high skinny heel but are mysteriously comfortable due to excellent design. They smell fucking great and the leather is buttery soft without losing its body. The leather is also perfectly grained and uniform. They retail for $900 but I think I paid $250 on Bluefly. Still very expensive for my budget, but really so worth it.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara, please tell me about the shoes too!

i don't own any *really* high fashion labels, but i covet them all the time.

sand.y, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have a pair of prada maryjanes. New fashion junkie answers now.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought some Rogan jeans this weekend, but they're being hemmed, so I haven't yet gotten to wear them. The advantage to buying expensive jeans: free tailoring!

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I place the blame for my clothes obsession on my mom, though- the big excitement on the weekend growing up was often a trip to Short Hills mall. ;-)

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Being pretty well fashion-immune, I think this is the right place to confess my one sick fashion fetish. Hstencil's post above reminded me of it. I want one of the black cotton suits that everybody was forced to wear when Cambodia became Democratic Kampuchea in 1975. Of all the things that are wrong with me, I think that this, while not actually being the thing-that's-wrong itself, points most directly to that thing.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pair of Seven jeans and I'm very happy with them but I wish you could get them with a little less flare. Tell me about the Rogans.

I have no such excuse with my mom--she's very practical. I must've fallen asleep while Elsa Klench was on one day and she rearranged my synapses.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Rogans were sooooooooo comfy when I tried them on-- really, really soft fabric (think Paper jeans, but they fit people with hips). The pair I bought are straight leg & cropped right at your ankle. Good for wearing with $3.50 Old Navy flip-flops. :-)

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny if I ever meet you and you are wearing those boots, I might just spontaneously combust.

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

john, i love you

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

back in the day when i... oh when i was younger (hah) i bght a few gucci shoes and sandals. very comfortable. except the 60's inspired ballerina shoes. gawd what a disaster. the other week i bght 2 pairs of muccia (prada) shoes. my boyfriend was astounded because one's a pair of pumps and another japanese style sandals. hmmm

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If I could afford designer shoes I'd totally buy them. When I was in Paris when the exchange rate was really great, I bought some Mosquitoes shoes & a pair of Kenzo flats. I like Stephane Kelian and would buy a pair if I could. I worry that if I am in NYC anytime soon I will nevertheless be unable to stop myself from finally getting a pair of those Yamamoto designed Adidas. I suppose.. if I had the $ for it, I'd def buy some designer stuff, can't think of what but I recall liking Olivier Thuyskens (didn't he just take over some label)?
What is weird is, it seems people my age who just start buying labels are really into Prada/Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs, and I don't much care for either one. It's like, if yr going to shell out the money, why pay for something safe & tasteful?

daria g, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

In my opinion particularly as concerns shoes, there is nothing wrong with paying a lot for something that is beautiful and well made. But I fail to understand why one would drop thousands on an unflattering Zac Posen dress for instance!

daria g, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But I really really really like Marc Jacobs. Not so much the Prada, except the leather goods like shoes & wallets are very nice. I don't have too much high-fashion stuff. An Issey Miyake jacket, one Sonia Rykiel, a Helmut Lang jacket... umm, Agnes B pants, a few Paul Smith things, a Costume National tie.. A Martin Margiela shirt... ummm. and a Comme Des Garcons shirt.. I think thats it. Oh, and a Prada wallet & shoes. Got tons of A.P.C. though

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the most expensive items of clothing I have is a prada dress. It was £360 & i only ever wore it once. when i tried it on, it fitted perfectly (i was at the height of skinnyness)& looked absolutely fab. I felt so good in it aswell. It took me 24 hours to decide whether or not to get it. Sadly, I can no longer fit into it, but of course I still have it. I also cant fit into my beloved flared diesel (not designer but u know) jeans. :-( woe is me!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am wearing new shoes today which I bought on saturday. i am trying to 'break them in' for this saturday. Anyway, here they are, they are great!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The pic doesnt do them justice! (my first ever picture by the way, i am soooo proud!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a lovely pair of brown Paul Smith red ear shoes the other day, 65 quid down from a ton, at that saving I just had to get them!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, i really like those, pinkpanther. before i went on holiday in rome, i wouldn't have anything to add, but i went and spent more money on one pair of shoes than i ever have on an article of clothes...silver prada flats with a little bow. i saw them in the window of the prada store just under the spanish steps and couldn't resist. i love them so much!

the only picture i could find is huge, and i don't know how to make it smaller, but if you'd like to see them, here's a website that has them... http://tinyurl.com/e10w

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

People have started wearing shoes on their ears? You see this is why I got out of London.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My best designer bargains: the £15 Issey Miyake shoes and the £50 Pucci dress. Yes, fairly recently. I was trained by women who could find the ONE Chanel piece hidden in the sale rack at Dayton's Oval Room for $25, who trained me so well they'd return home with it only to be told 'pfft, that's just from the Pret' by my Dayton's-hata grandmother.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

whilst not being a designer label fiend i do have a tendency to buy semi designer clothes - silas, supreme, stussy, maharishi, duffer etc. And when it comes to trainers i recently shelled out £200 on very limited pair of nike's

james (james), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, £150 on a pair of trainers recently too!

Colette - they are lovely, my brother bought me a pair of prada shoes to go with my prada dress, but i traded them in for some prada trainers which got far more wear!!
Suzy - please can I go shopping with you??!! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pair of Prada and a pair of Robert Clerergie shoes, but I got great bargains on them both so they really weren't more expensive than a normal pair of shoes, and since they're handmade they're more durable than the cheap pairs anyway. I don't know why I feel defensive about this but I do.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther, what are you wearing with the new shoes?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny if I ever meet you and you are wearing those boots, I might just spontaneously combust.

Hurrah! We'll have fireworks at the July 4 FAP!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am hoping that Pinkpanther always dresses all in pink. I think the name and one pair of shoes is sufficient evidence to make that assumption.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really afford designer clothes nor shoes, but if any of y'all were wondering there is a pair of Marc Jacobs boots marked down to $200 that I am drooling over. They are green ankle boots with gold buttons. I have no clothes to go with such a pair of extravagant shoes.

Mandee, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah, fyi as Pinkpanther is not on line today (studying) i can confirm it will be a just above the knee black skirt (v nice - it has a fake slit in it) and a black top which is hard to describe but nice - we are off to a wedding.

james (james), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

comme des garcons

Erik, Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ppl look good in marc jacobs and prada. safe yes: flattering, well made and nicely cut. i have some navy marc jacobs cords. i used to have dark green velvet ysl jeans from the camberwell market when i was 12. the cords are the only designer thing i have tho (unless you count the ridiculous malcolm mclaren/vivienne westwood jacket also procured from the camberwell market that i have never worn). normally i just buy balenciaga ripoffs from korean shops where the girls hate me. i would buy costume national shoes if i could afford them.

minna (minna), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

minna (minna), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

its all about my cobra kai outfit.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my (and any other) prada trainers look crap. hurt my feet as well.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot about the designer trainers clause!

minna (minna), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think my prada trainers looked crap & they were really comfy, I have had them for about 3 years tho!
Thanks James for letting Sarah know.
Martin - i do dress in pink quite alot, as for some reason it suits me! I'll prob be wearing pink the day I finally get to meet you!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I would hope so! Otherwise how will we distinguish you from any other panthers in the vicinity? (This may not be a big issue - probably depends which pub we go to.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther is my new style guru.

*Where* did you get those pink shoes?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't afford (or can't justify to myself) really good designer shoes. Probably the biggest name in my wardrobe is BCBG, a pair of red sandals. When I tried them on I was almost knocked out because they didn't hurt, the way most stylish shoes do on my feet.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 12 June 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i always figure that i don't have the tools/machinery/skills to make my own pair of shoes = any price is justifiable. as long as i have nice shoes i am happy with clothes from the pound or homemade ones (well...generally).

petite verte (petite verte), Thursday, 12 June 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually walked into the Gucci boutique for the first time today... they always have gorgeous suits in the window that I know I'd look great it, but I'm sure they're way too expensive. So I was looking around, and asked the salesperson what price range they're in; certainly they're costly. And he was like, 'oh no, they're not bad at all!' So I said great, what's the price range? The answer? Mostly $1500--1700!! I figured they'd be that high, but who in their right mind would term that 'not at all expensive'?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara- me a style guru? I am so proud!!! ;-) The gorgeous shoes are from office. They have so many great shoes at the moment & you can buy online which is great! http://www.officeholdings.co.uk/ There are so many pairs I want to buy at the moment.
Martin-if you look on the 'sneakers that do not look ridiculous' thread, you will see the recurring pink theme in a couple of pairs of trainers!! I've heard those fancy London pubs have loads of panthers in them!! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Office rules.

Mandee, Friday, 13 June 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara did I miss where you described the shoes?

I got my boots from http://www.bluefly.com/ ; I'm a big fan. I also got a lovely calvin Klein beaded dress there, and got some fancy linens for my folks.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Office Online - O-H M-Y G-O-D!!

Do they post to Ireland? I'm checking right now...

I'm too lazy to look for a picture of my shoes so I'll describe them. They're short stiletto-heeled sling-backs in the softest leather. The colour is sensational - kind of tan heading towards pink and they have shapes cut out of the leather on the front of the shoe so you can see a bit of my foot through them. They're SO COMFORTABLE as all well made shoes are and they make my feet *smile*. I think those Buddhist's have got it all wrong - the feet is where it's at!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 13 June 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Penury here I come - they deliver within 5-6 working days.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 13 June 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MY GOD. office online is heaven. so many beautiful shoes and they are not out of my price range! but...I WANT THEM ALL.

sand.y, Friday, 13 June 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've already bought the red low-heeled ones with the white dots. Yay!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 13 June 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara, STOP MAKING ME JEALOUS.

sand.y, Friday, 13 June 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Simple beauty is a wonderful thing.

There are far too many shoes at office at the moment, my other 'must have' pair are these:-

I could swear mine have a higher heel though, and a buckle around the ankle.
