Sleeping for what feels like twelve hours, waking up, getting out of bed, checking the clock and realizing that you've only slept two hours: Classic or Dud?

I've found this usually happens when I'm playing something very softly while I sleep (especially SAWII). I think it keeps from falling into a deep sleep so that I stay in a dream-state limbo or something. It always feels like I've gotten more sleep in two hours than I normally do in 8-9. And the feeling you get when you realize that you still have hours and hours of uninterrupted sleep to go = instant classic

soooo classic

Is it just me or is that kind of sleep mostly REM sleep? I'm thinking thats why it seems to go on forever, cause you're dreamingish, and in that state, time tends to expand, hours fit into minutes, all tardis like. Think of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy's discussion in "Waking Life".

PS I agree it is classic.

I was told in school that it takes about an hour before you go into REM and start dreaming. But haven't we all had dreams that start immediately upon falling asleep, where sometimes you'll drift in and out of consciousness and start a new dream each time? What gives?

I dreamed about REM and woke up screaming

Oh definitely classic. Nothing beats that feeling of waking up & knowing you still have ages before you have to get up. ahhhh bed!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, tho the classic can quickly turn to dud if u can't fall back to sleep, while still feeling really tired..
with age, i'm growing increasingly worried about getting waking up during the night.. a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, methinks

i've had insomnia the last few nights due to too much caffeine and thinking about work - got to sleep about 4.30am last 'night' - the birds were singing and the sky was a dim blue...got up at 10.45 :(

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch - that specific taint and those first bird sounds are probably in my top 10 of all duds..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

well it wouldnt be so bad to wake up to after at least 6 hours sleep - i should've just stayed up all night but i always feel terrible if i sleep during the day and just cannot do it usually, unless i have been out all night

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This sort of thing doesnt usually happen to me at night... usually, it comes from taking a nap... my best sleep happens usually if i somehow end up taking a nap at around 5:00, which is exceedingly rare... better still is if this nap happens on a spring day witha perfect breeze coming through the window... i will doze off for an hour and feel more refreshed than i would be if i got 8 hours of sleep every day, which i dont :-(.

the most dud thing of all is what happened to me last night... having slept for around 4 hours each on sunday and monday nights, i was prepared last night to go to bed early, and was *just* on the edge of sleep at around 10:30, when my mom came into retrieve soemething from the closet in my room, and I was jolted out of sleep right as i was going into it... i couldnt fall asleep again until 2am.

Oh god I hate that. Usually happens when I'm dosing off w/my contacts in, and then I go take them out, return immediately to bed, and can't fall asleep for a couple of hours. I've gotten to the point where i just say 'fuck it' and sleep w/them in. (don't try this at home kids)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally classic I say

ThErEdNeD (ThErEdNeD), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

On Monday, I had a bad reaction to (I think) some cashews I'd had the night before and I slept from 4 p.m. to 6:45 the next morning. I never felt so good in my life.
That's my home remedy: Shut the body down and let it take of itself.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. I think it even happened to me today! unless you want to go back to sleep, of course.
