i broke into a decaying trashed school that hadnt been used in decades and took a roll of photos. old furniture, washrooms classrooms, a gymnasium that smelt like piss.
a whole room where the walls were the nursey room georgy porgy were scrawled on the walks with chalk, some of the rooms make shift bedrooms, broken glass everywhere, exposed wires, the fire hose laid thorought the corridors, a door to the roof where i could see all of downtown, things written on black boards, this genral decay-and
it was sad and wonderful at the same time
and then the cops showed up and took our names, addresses, phone no.s told us to leave one was in in denim and one in uniform.

what was really interesting was how something so modern (it was built in the early 60s) could turn so quickly into a relic, and i wondered why it was abonded(sp) when so many of that era and earlier are kept.

I really fucking hate it it's still considered "trespassing" to go where no one goes. I mean I know in terms of liability and whatnot they gotta keep ya out, but other than that, why? Because you might appreciate something no one appreciates?

Glad you got to see this place Anthony, it sounds really neat. I used to sneak in to tons of places back before I was legal. The night in the cemetary cured that, though.

nope, but that experience almost made me one of the breed of living dead known as "felon."

This place sounds great, really interesting, sad that you got kicked out tho.

Last saturday, I was with a bunch of people who squatted an old tram hall which hasn't been used for over a year (the rent the city is asking for it is too high, 15000 Euros a month, no one's interested in it). We wanted to turn it into an autonomous culture/social centre. Yesterday, the police threw us out. We had already planned a programme for the whole week (gigs, movies, theatre etc.). What a shame.

Anyone else here ever been to that mammoth, decaying central train station in Detroit? I went a few years ago, and it was fairly well-trafficked for an illegal site. Wish'd I'd brought my camera.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been by there, haven't been inside it if that's what you mean.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My running joke is that art students at CCS (the local art school) can't graduate unless they take pictures of the train station.

Several years ago, some friends and I went into an abandoned office building (Nicole, by the Coney Islands on Michigan). There were HUGE piles of clothing that the homeless had collected... really bizarre. Then we accidentally came across a homeless man, who said "I'm clean" thinking we were the cops (our flashlight and all). But, in our 4am drunken stupor, we thought he said, "I'm gonna clean you!!!" and we ran out like little kids. Good times.

This is one of my favorite sites about Detroit: http://detroityes.com

Ha ha, this is so true! And it seems like every year in the Metro Times photo contest they have to have at least one picture of the train station there too.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

reasons it might be illegal to tresspass in certain places: people could live there and set dangerous fires dump bodies; take people there to beat up, torture, or rape unseen; further vandalize and destroy the property.

Most people don't break into abandonded buildings just to "appreciate" them.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So, I just went to Oxford Rail Station to unlock my bike.

As soon as I'm up the steps, I see what I think is she, pull out my key, and trip horrendously on a kerb. Key flies from hand and out of sight. I am totally aware at the time how absurd and cinematic and stupid this all is - I half expect it to turn up in someone's laundry or something.

I spend five minutes looking for the key, but I can't find it because I don't have my glasses, and cos it's pretty dark out. While I'm doing this I also realise that I have no idea where my bike is, so figuring it might have been stolen (I've already had a bike nicked from there before) I go looking for it in the racks. This is also hard, 'cos blah blah blind blah blah useless, but I find it after a few minutes, and then I go back to looking for the damn key.

At which point, the guard comes up, and starts asking me what the hell I'm doing, and when I explain he's all "do you think I'm blind or stupid, I've been watching you". And apparently I've been rattling locks (!?) and there've been complaints and stuff. Anyway, I'm all polite and tell him I'm glad he's doing a good job etc, and we agree manfully that I'm going to leave right fucking now or he's going to call the police.

So yeah. I have no idea if this is the right thread, but I'm all shaken up, like, and kinda had to post this.

Thats fucking cool. i love abandoned places. Buffalo NY has a great, high rise tower of a train station, cool old architecture, a landmark but abandoned. It's also highly trafficked by people for an illegal place. They actually opened it for an official art show recently. Wish i could have gone. I used to check out lots of those in Utica NY too. Did an art show in one. It had an old half flooded bank vault in the basement- with the giant circular steel vault door a foot thick. Echoey and spooky.

For other modern relics, see abandoned malls. www.deadmalls.com
