Are condoms out of fashion in the UK these days?

stevo (stevo), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a drawer full of condoms to give to students, and they never come and get them - so I'd say yes.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

how well do you advertise the fact?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i blame hstencil

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I haven't got a sticker on the door, but they all know if they want to have sex to come to Unca Pete.

(Its in the student handbook).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if they want to have sex to come to Unca Pete

yargh

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you ought to put them out in a bowl?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Then people would mistake them for Johnny Durex chewing gum. A lot of them are for some reason flavoured.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright then - who reading this in the UK has an STD at the moment? There must be at least 20 of you. Come on, hands up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite happily not guilty! I think this is a very sad state of affairs (excuse the pun) I mean sex should be less of a taboo more so than ever, but it seems people are still ignoring the implications of casual sex. I cannot preach, as we have all been wreckless at some point, but there are limits.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on, I am not classed as young either. This thread is not for me.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people who have chlamydia don't even know they have it as often (esp in men) it is symptomless (fact gleaned from reading mags not from personal experience).

Emma, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

As if anyone is going to come and knock on your office door and ask for condoms, Pete.

I used to feel an appalling sense of schadenfreude when I heard of young people getting STDs. I think I am over this. Chlamydia levels are really quite horrifying.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

WHen was the last time those of us laughably calling ourselves young Brits were tested (as you say Emma, its quite possible that people with chlamydia wouldn't know UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE!!!!) [/scaremonger]

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The most horrifying thing about most of these STDs is their consequences. i.e. infertility, the ability to make a baby be born blind etc etc. If people knew the worst case scenario of these infections, I am sure more people would get themselves checked out. Luckily most girls get checked through their smear tests, but these are too far apart for a regular health check.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't 50% of Americans supposed to have herpes or some such insane number?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's 20% or so, Aaron. Like 1 in 4 or somethin'. Lemme investigate.

Mandee, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

22% of Americans over the age of 12 have herpes.

Mandee, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, next time I'm over there I'll stop at nine then.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I don't know any young people.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well this puts a damper on my plans to sleep through England.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem, I swear I didn't do it! But this may put a damper on my plans to go to the UK this year.

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

this seems like a really low rate to me, especially since I remember being at college (UC Berkeley) and the statistics being that 1 in 4 students had genital warts!
