"Howdy, folks. I'm Big Tex. Welcome to the Texas State Fair."

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I just tried to post him and I lost my connection. I was going to say that I love the state fairs too, teeny, and I used to visit Big Tex a lot growing up because my grandparents lived in Texas. I also like folksy fairs with caramel apples and old men with banjos.

The Texas fairgrounds are great: Art deco with cowboy-and-indian motifs. I think the corn dog (or "corny dog" as it is called in Texas) was invented at this fair, too.

My father does a very good impression of Big Tex's voice.

Big Tex looks a little like Bela Lugosi.

There's always funnel cake/fry bread/local fried dough variant.

Big Tex rules. I live near Fair Park - -some of the most underutilized urban real estate ever. All of the expo buildings were built for the cennetennial (texas) and as Nemo said upthread are gorgeous Art Deco things. I took Gareth there and since they were doing some sort of construction/upkeep at the time he said it reminded him of the Planet of the Apes. Wait, he said that about a lot of things. . .

what the hell is this?

10:30 a.m. Mystery Sack Contest - Home Economics Building

'Mystery Sack Contest' sounds awful, like something you might have been fooled into doing in boot camp.

I sure do wish I still had the mirror things I won at the Missouri State Fair when I was in 5th grade.... I also wish I could remember what bands were stenciled on them. I _THINK_ one of them might've been Foreigner.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't we have a state fair thread before?

i like the country fair in hastings, michigan. although the how-to-skin-a-rabbit display made a deep and uncomfortable impression on me.

what i *really* love is "state fair," the movie, starring janet gaynor and will rogers and a very charismatic pig.

Dude, that's no way to talk about Buddy Hackett.

Classic: little kids with 30 cubic feet of cotton candy on a tiny stick, bands like Goose Creek Symphony playing at 2 pm on a wobbly stage, petting zoos, Gravitron after 3 beers

Dud: almost all the other people there
