Near Dark -- classic or then some?

Or more to the point, is anything Kathryn Bigelow did elsewhere in her career that didn't quite work as planned -- Point Break, I ask you -- forgiven by the fact that she not only did Real Genius but made a movie that seems like a high concept hell sample -- modern-day Western meets gothic horror as scripted by the guy who wrote The Hitcher -- and yet is alternately funny, bloodcurdling, tense and, when needed (as opposed to grossly overused), sentimental? Maybe the ending is a copout, but still.

The roadhouse scene alone -- Bill Paxton just on the verge of exploding, edits and camera cuts just right, and the slow dawning realization among the bar staff and patrons that they're going to die. Riveting -- and they pulled it off to a muted soundtrack that's not only the Cramps' version of "Fever" but included Jools Holland and George Strait. Tarantino was taking note, I tells ya.

I remember it very fondly, though I haven't seen it in some years. Some very nice lines in there as I recall ("How old are you?" "I fought for the South. We lost.") What was Real Genius about it? I never saw it. And, as action movies go, Point Break wasn't so bad. K19 was interesting, too.

Surely you are not suggesting that there was anything wrong with The Hitcher.

Near Dark is grate. I like how they never use the v-word to describe the baddies, never really define what they are exactly.

six years pass...

Watched the other night for maybe first time since '87. They stint a little on how the hero's dad replaces his son's blood so easily, but that's a minor distraction.

What happened to Adrian Pasdar? Not only is he gorgeous, his physical performance in the first half when he's constantly nauseous and suffering from his new vampiric status is really committed; you feel the cold sweats... I also forgot how funny Bill Paxton is doing a shitkicker Nicholson.

Pasdar married a Dixie Chick and is one of the stars of NBC's Heroes (he's the flying man).

oh! Shows how TV-indifferent I've gotten.

I also forgot he was the star of that short-lived series "Profit."

Near Dark hitting BluRay in November.

good news! Near Dark might be my fave v-movie; the leads are beautiful, the vamps have such a good time being mean. Also great tension, tangerine dream and that climax on fire. Agree too on the transfusion. That part's pretty lol.

one year passes...

two transfusions! just watched this on tv...it was great. makes total sense it was the same scriptwriter as the hitcher.

love rutger hauer, he's just so evil and manic.

five years pass...

Today I learned that "Near Dark" is functionally out of print. Not even streaming anywhere. Wonder what's up with that.

Allegedly due a 4K release this year

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 February 2022 03:59 (four years ago)

Or rather it was mooted for last year

So maybe still en route?

three years pass...

Rumor:

Apparently rights for Near Dark (1987) have reverted back to the films producers. Negotiations are currently taking place between them and Studiocanal. Unsure if this applies to worldwide rights or just in the UK.
