a) so, how about trucker hats in europe/england? i mean, they are already inauthentic by dint of being imported, not a homegrown thing, how does this affect the look? does it matter? how?

b) um, you know, what are these trucker hats anyway? i forgot

c) where can i buy nice ones in london?

First, explain the difference between them and baseball caps.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Authentic ones: Scania, Iveco, Volvo, Massey Furgesson, Fordson, Ford, LDV, Renault.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha!

AHA!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

gte cricket hates? That ain't cool!

Myabe, if you go to a transport caf some dude will have left his hat behind, and if you ask nicely the owner of the caf will let you take it.

I had SAAB hat once, it was for kids, as I was a kid at the time.

Blimey! You can't even see the trucker hat that I BET HE'S WEARING IN EUROPE in that pic! But I'm not posting the one with me in it where you can CLEARLY see his Republican Oppression Cap!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

First, explain the difference between them and baseball caps.

Trucker caps are mesh around the side and edges, with a foam section on the front, with the logo or name. Baseball caps are cloth (or wool, or denim or...) all the way around.

Trucker hats tend to have a taller front section, though the "authentic" baseball caps (New Era 5950s) come close.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that this is an interesting concept, how does appropriation by europeans/japanese differ from appropriation by other americans?

and, look, i really want one of these hats now. and a cigar

It's an American hat.
It's a working class hat.
I find it ugly and super naff.
Oh, it's got a logo on it.
A man with a dog and a gun.
I hate men with dogs and guns.
In America, these hats are worn by old men, bums, and truckers, aren't they?
These hats vote Bush.
These hats vote Duncan-Smith.
Now they're worn ironically.
Some attractive young people now wear this hat.
It's orange and red.
Should I get a trendy hat like this?
No.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, please tell me you wrote this before you learned otherwise on the other thread.

Please.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

See now I'd just call these baseball caps or something even though obv they arent. I'm quite amazed at this ironic wearing of ugly hats trend. I havent seen it here (Melbourne). I always thought bogans wore hats like this.

Unless you are a member of like, the Cosmic Psychos or something but they were always daggy. And Bill Walsh runs Cherry. Need I say more.

Now I have Throwing Muses songs in my head ("so you own ugly hats/you wear them well"). Ha!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus in 'will four year old trends make me stop hating the poor? all signs point to no!' shocker

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 13 June 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Four years old? But the urban wearers of feed caps thing so predates that by about a decade (unironic use by machinists/farmers/rig drivers since the invention of mesh leads to inverted/ironic use by farmpunks->skaters/flannel shirt brigade/SubPop->queer/fashion elements->early adapters inc. indie boys->you can buy them at The Gap)!

Trends which originate in the sticks (jeans, cowboy hats/boots) always get remixed/contextualised by urban others. Hats are just the beginning. You there in Manhattan with your whippet-racer's flat wool tweed cap, I bet you thought you were being a bit of a preppie, right? That beret in LA that's like way existential, dude, is the feed cap of the French!

suzy (suzy), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I see no evidence of Nick hating the poor at all! Bigots and the wilfully uneducated, yes, by all means, against the wall first come the Revolution - but those people appear in all walks of life and in all places around the world.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

'Bums' and truckers against the wall? What a weird revolution

dave q, Friday, 13 June 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

pharrell stopped wearing his at least a year ago. don't do it gareth!

minna (minna), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very hard to be American and cool, when America is so far right.

It's even harder to be American and cool when you're British.

That is all.

Go ahead, hate me when you should be hating Bush.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(By the way, as for the poor, I will always support whatever political system helps them become the unpoor.)

Momus (Momus), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

as a young attractive socialist it is my duty to weat this hat.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i do not recognise the category of british. i am international

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

but if the uncool become the cool how will anyone know who the cool is any more?

after a real (= successful) revolution no one would be able to remember whose side anyone was on beforehand

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i am pan-galactic

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q, Friday, 13 June 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Du hast kein Sinn!

Mandee, Friday, 13 June 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
Just to demonstrate how completely this trend has been played, I saw a guy driving a Porsche yesterday with a vanity license plate that read "clozer". Guess what he was wearing?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Sunday, 28 September 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Who abducted Old Momus?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 28 September 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Heritage Foundation

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 28 September 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw a few in urban outfitters here, they were lame and said "TRUCK" on them, honestly.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 28 September 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a guy in the club wearing one tonight, who insisted on referring to everyone as "chief", in the voice least suited to saying "chief" ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 28 September 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Kids in Berkeley seem to think it's cool to wear Serie A and Premiership team shirts.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 28 September 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

We have some examples of that down here, but then again, I'm thinking of the foreign students at UCI, so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

... (gareth), Monday, 29 September 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i just read a mention to these hats in a friend's weblog. he has recently been in london and wondered why this trend.
it made me think of you guys, so many months talking about this trucker hat thing.
