I filed this under Comics but of course the music is terrific too. Anyway the other day I went to Powell's and saw that the third Sketchbook Comics had come out. I snatched it up and read it in one gorgeful sitting. Mmmm, Kochalka quality! Yes?

Oh yes. One of the great things I enjoy about Kochalka is his ability to draw floppy things. Floppy elves, floppy kitties, and most amazingly, the floppy snow -- see "Quit Your Job" especially for some wonderfully enormous and floppy snowflakes.

Also the song "Kitty In A Coma" is one of mankind's greatest achievements.

His version of "Bad Astronaut" in the live setting will make you a believer.

Quit Your Job has stiff competition with the Sketchbook Diaries for his best work, but at the same time they're totally different beasts.

Some of his more recent books have been a bit disappointing (Fantastic Butterflies especially, but Pinky and Stinky didn't do so much for me [though maybe I should read it again]).

Oh Erik! Really, go hunt down some Kochalka. Jel posted his website.

Pinky & Stinky was diverting, but I ultimately returned it to the shoppe.

One of the nicest guys ever. All I have of his are the Monkey Vs. Robot album and comic from Top Shelf. His style doesn't really have any immediate appeal for me, actually, but I can definitely see hanging out with him given the opportunity. We should get him to post here.
