I wanna talk about berets. I kinda want one, but I dont' want people to think I'm a pussy or fan of jazz fusion.

what do ya'll think of berets?

g.s (kissmyfist), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could find a replacement for my black velvet beret, which I used to wear constantly during the winter. More than once friends were able to get phone messages to me in bars because they told the bartender to look for the blonde in the black beret.
:^}

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god. i want a beret. where can i get good berets in london?

but is it ok to appropriate/co-opt something that a le pen voting citroen 2cv driver would wear? is this the subversion of a right wing signifier, or is it a sign of the increasing conservatism of the montmartre hipster. and can i get away with this in finsbury park?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha
i was waiting for that.

begin the trucker hat backlash..erm. again.
lets co opt and recontextualize the beret.

g.s (kissmyfist), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Gen. Shinseki already tried to recontextualize the beret by making everybody in the US Army wear a black one, simultaneously confusing every other branch of service, earning derision from several quarters and pissing off the Rangers something fierce. If John Wayne and De Niro can't avoid looking stupid in berets chances are you can't either. Do not attempt. Also, fitting them on properly can approach complexity.

The only way a beret looks passable on a male is if you have a good deal of hair flowing out beneath it, in which case nobody will confuse you with a sane and rational person who has made a regrettable fashion faux pas but will instead assume correctly that you fancy yourself a dandy man-about-town and like to talk about how much the government sucks and/or your favorite drugs, with lots of personal anecdotes.

With regards to women: It is possible to look good in a beret. Color choice is extremely important, however, and pink should be avoided at all costs.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

with lots of personal anecdotes

haha!

""dandy man-about-town and like to talk about how much the government sucks and/or your favorite drugs, with lots of personal anecdotes.
""

^ see, thats what I wanna avoid, I figger coupled with what i normally wear, there's no way anyone could get that message from me and realize that I'm totally not like that. am I underestimating the power of the beret? am I idealistic?

g.s (kissmyfist), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ok to wear a beret if you're Faye Dunaway. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/faye.dunaway/scansd/dunaway/bonnie05.jpg

It's not ok to wear a beret if you're not Faye Dunaway. http://www.triumphpc.com/psst!/dec02/images/saddam-hussein.jpg

I have two cashmere berets and they are fantastic. I wear my hair like Faye Dunaway, although mine's longer, and a hat looks just so.

I cannot under-estimate the worth of a good hat.

And makes me feel sick to my tummy.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 12 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

There has been enough arguing about hats today on this board. Can't you see this eternal headgear dichotomy is tearing us apart?

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 12 June 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Now you're talking! Cabaret, existentialism and homosexuality! Hats worth having!

Momus (Momus), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Celebrate the essential ambiguity of hats!

who is that HOTTIE?

Kelly Wright (keckles), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a black wool beret and a navy one with sequins sewn all over it. One time I wore the sequined one to a diner, and someone said, "What the hell do you got on your head?" I thought I looked okay.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

you were probably wrong - sequins on anything but skimpy tops, on anybody other than rail-thin popstars = BAD BAD BAD BAD also very silly. IMO.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but it looks so adorable on me! Especially when i wear my false eyelashes.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for berets. Especially ones that say "Rusty" on them.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Try:
Boinas Elósegui S.A., Tolosa, Spain - 'since 1858'
I've got one - 100% pure virgin wool (with a bit of Teflon thrown in for forehead lubrication)

http://www.boinaselosegui.com/

Now there's a young lady who knows how to wear a titfer.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

when in Dunedin I had a parade of berets, the bestest & longest-lastingest was a raspberry one (which, yes, was found in a second-hand store). sadly it was BURNED by munters when left at um, dunedin people what was that pub called near the hospital? y'know, on the same road as where fuel used to be except a few blocks closer to the harbour?
(haha did the dandy thing quite well with the hair, the stripey french shirt, & a peach scarf. + the whole writing poetry in cafes thing, heh).

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ess, get thee a paisley cravat!

When worn in jaunty Parisienne style, or perched at a rakish faux-military angle, berets are ESSENTIAL fun winter-wardrobe dressup headwear. Repeat: ESSENTIAL. Mine has a vintage enamel brownie badge on the front; i suggest decorating similarly.

Do not ever, ever, EVER, pull a beret down tight on your head so that it forms a wee dome of your great pointy noggin. You will look like a TURNIP. This is fine for stately Russian palaces and mosques, but NOT FOR HATS.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 16 June 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

UPDATE

Hey, so I bought the beret. It was a really bad idea, I look like a fuck face and I'm gonna take it back.
I am powerless against the implied social signifiers of the beret.
the world is not ready.
maybe next time..

gs. (kissmyfist), Monday, 16 June 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

petra - picture/link plz!

I always read this thread as 'Let's talk about breasts'!!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's ok too.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OK then, breasts.....

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Just what are breasts, anyway? And why the fixation with them? And what is your preferred breast shape?

(Thanks for the verification and validation - I too read "breasts" in the title, Pinkpanther.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

They are great. I wish I could wear one. As a student of French literature, however, I feel like it's just not a good idea to go there.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

Oh you mean berets. Carry on.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think cut off gloves go best with berets.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

freshman year of college I bought a blue one to keep my head warm. I had my hair all in tiny braids and I liked the way it looked. b/f hated it and it mysteriously disappeared. But probably I just forgot it somewhere. Haven't had one since; they are tricky buggers.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I go through epochs where I like berets and actually wear them and other epochs where I detest the things. Right now I am ambivalent.
