Friday The Thirteenth

Is anyone nervous that today is Friday The Thirteenth? i.e. are you superstitious at all? Do you do any of that weird stuff like saying "Good Morning Your Majesty" (to ensure good luck, apparently)if you see a solitary magpie? do you studiously avoid walking under ladders? have a thing about black cats?

Should I stay home from work today, in case any Bad Things happen on this supposedly unlucky day?

C J (C J), Friday, 13 June 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Typically Friday the 13ths are lucky for me. So rock on!

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 13 June 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yes to studiously avoiding walking under ladders - the only superstition which is *sensible*. No to everything else.

If my Dad spills salt, he takes a pinch of it and throws it behind his back "to hit the Devil in the eye".

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday 13ths seem to work out like pretty much any other day for me. Today however, I'm waiting to find out if the folx in a nice new (and v. cheap) houseshare want me to move in with them. I'm not terribly superstitious but my fingers are X'ed.

Oh and the films were rub.

robster (robster), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

so I woke up with a hangover, remembered that I'd volunteered to open up and had to leave the house at 7.15, got into work a bit late, with no time to get a bacon sandwich, didn't manage to turn one of the alarms off properly, so it went off, which meant we had to call the engineer in to re-set it, then I managed to bugger up my computer, and it's only 9.22

Not really Friday 13th stuff, but the start of a very bad day, none the less!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a bit superstitious. Not walking under ladders is just common sense though! I don't out new shoes on the table. If i get a new bag, i have to put a penny in the bottom of the bag. I usually salute magpies (not all the time though as there are too many!) However, nothing bad will happen today as it my mum & dad's 33rd wedding anniversary. Hooray for my mum & dad!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't PUT new shoes....

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Met line went haywire this morning and I was 3/4 of an hour late for work, this means I can't leave at three which is getting me down on such a glorious day, still, the Peak district will be glorious tomorrow!!

chris (chris), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my boss just rang to say: "i have done no work this week so there is no need for you to come today at all! have a nice weekend!!"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

How jealous off you are we all Mark! Good work (or not as the case may be!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I get my degree result today, a new chapter of my life opens, I have a party to go to and a load of beer. I'm happy.

Ed (dali), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom was born on a Friday the 13th, so I consider it a lucky day.

Whenever Fridays fall on the 13th day of the lunar calender cycle, my body transforms...for I am WEREW0LF!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean that it you started counting the lunar calendar from (say) Tuesdays, you'd never transform ever?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so out of it this morning I didn't know it was Friday the Thirteenth til I looked at this thread. This week has been so unlucky for me that maybe I will have a strange reversal of luck and have a great day! If that makes sense?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, my mother was born on Friday 13th too (August 1943). I'm afraid we don't really consider it much luck, though. She had double pneumonia and got kidney failure the year she was 21. (She had a transplant in 1990.) So she's always been *really* bugged by the date.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling today will be good, so bring it on. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Around midnight, I tried to dye my hair a color called "Caramel Kiss" and it turned grey. Around nine this morning, I realized that roughly twenty-five pairs of my shoes were accidentally thrown away during my move across town. The milk in the fridge has expired. It's Freaky Friday.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 14 June 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sucked.

Sucked.

Sucked.

Read some good comics, some not-so-good, did absolutely no writing, and spent the vast majority of the day dealing with a sick two-year-old. And there's no two-year-old like a sick two-year-old. Grumpy now. Frazzled. Should go to sleep and just end this relatively awful day.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 14 June 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I treat 13 as my 'lucky' number. I always play it when I'm at a roulette table, and any time I have to pick a number, that's it.

If I play the lottery, I figure it eliminates a lot of people playing who are superstitious.

It comes from playing games as a kid. '13' was supposed to be an unlucky number, so that's always where the good clue was hidden, or the hidden number or whatever. At least that's what I figured.

So does being anti-superstitious amount to pro-superstitious here?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 14 June 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't realize it was Friday the 13th until I went to see X-Men 2 and saw the poster for Freddy vs Jason and thought, "Oh, they should have released that today," and then wondered for a minute why that was.

Nothing bad happened; I continued to not find a job (summer job in a college town - not an easy thing to find, not recommended), although one of the ice cream parlors is hiring (...). I bought a poster of Marilyn Monroe to put next to Black Velvet Jesus, so the living room/office feels a bit more living room/office-like now, and a Super Grover magnet so that the refrigerator is less dominated by the girlfriend's magnets. Oh, and my first Netflix movies arrived, yay -- I want to get them watched soon so we can return them and get MORE MOVIES.

Oh, there was a moment of hrmph when the girlfriend realized that Parents' Weekend, when her mother was going to visit, is the weekend of my best friend's wedding, when I'll be back in New Orleans (yay!), but I think we agreed that she's going to ask her mother to visit another time. (Many of her family are IU alumni, so they're anxious to visit us and bask in the glow.) (It's odd for me how often she talks to her parents and sees them; I see mine every few years, talk or email a few times a month.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 14 June 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, after a fairly normal day (I even managed to parallel park up on Cap Hill in 1 try this afternoon!) I got emails from two different exes this evening- it was kind of strange. Both very "i'm in an introspective mood..." letters -what the hell got into *both* of them that they both sat down & typed out message like that in the same evening? They don't know each other, are 3,000 miles away, and I didn't really expect to hear from either again. Very weird.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 14 June 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

We held a wedding this past Friday, you're all crazy with your superstitions!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 15 June 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

By the time this Friday rolled around, it's been carved in stone that I'm no longer on speaking terms with my father, and I'm being audited by the IRS, who maintain that I owe them $4,500 due to some discrepancy on my 2001 returns. You tell me -- is this day bad luck?

I was actually born on Friday the 13th (of an October, no less).

My increasing superstitions are starting to turn into an OCD right now. I'm particularly obsessed with touching wood if I say something like "I've never fallen down the stairs" etc...
I am also obsessed with having to rub my hand on wood if I've got itchy palms. If your left palm itches you'll be increasing good luck but if your right hand itches you'll be disspelling possible bad luck. The more "authentic" the wood, the better. Better to rub your palm against a tree than a shiny varnished desk for instance. Problem is doing this in public can cause a few funny looks. I'm rubbing my palm on wood for god's sake.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I always touch wood (ahem) when I say things like that.

I wonder what became of zenome kistachion? Did he go into a monastery after his girlfriend died of amoebiasis?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 13 January 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

I had a friend coming to visit me and his plane got diverted and now he's stuck 5 hour's bus ride away. We're in Spain though, and I think it's actually Tuesday the 13th or something that they fear here.
