stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

*That* Ed picture to thread.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we discounting anything worn during the eighties here?

Archel (Archel), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A yellow snood!!! (80's rule yeah! *punches the air*)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If 80s childwardrobe gaffes count: bright pink ski pants, black batwing jumper with bright pink teddy bears on it. No photos OF COURSE.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

black puffa with the suede shoulder detail (tried googling it but couldnt find anything) made me look like Brian Harvey

james (james), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

frighteningly *snug* yellow pedal pushers and a headband fashioned out of the gold ribbon off a box of Milk Tray.

(but my boss has just told me to go home and change, ho ho ho)

rener (rener), Friday, 13 June 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh a jade beret & coat to match! yuk!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

two
different
shoes

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've worn a tight pink terry cloth frock I got from friend, not just once but twice. What makes this funny is that I'm bald guy with a beard. I still may occasionally wear a black dress, but I think my days of gender-blending are definitely over.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Insert a couple of "a"s there.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I own this thread. It's a wig I wore on the first day of school because I had to, and to keep it on my head, my mother crocheted brown ties which tied under my chin.

Suffice it to say I soon discovered I would rather be bald than wear this around strange new kids, so on the second day of school NO WIG.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a turquoise and orange shellsuit when I was eight years old. That's pretty bad.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

my fluorescent pink tracksuit trousers beat that matt...i have also worn a paisley short

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my fluorescent pink tracksuit trousers beat that matt

forgot to point out this was YEARS ago

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

My best friend and I were going to a party and we decided to dress in my really bad clothes I had found. It was a game, whoever had someone come up to them first and say "That's really cool" would win (I am not sure how we thought of this). So I had on this long sleeve hot pink silk shirt with a lime green short sleeve shirt over it and a Mexican poncho on. I had just pulled up to the house when this dude walks over to the car and says "Whoa Carey, that's really cool."

Carey (Carey), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Circa 1980, I wore my oldest brother's Greg Brady-styled striped pants (a remnant of 1974 or thereabouts) on "Tacky Day" at my school, hoping no one would notice that I had worn the exact same pair of trousers the previous year once, when I had nothing else to wear.

And of course, I got busted on it. These pants were tres noticeable -- IIRC, the color scheme involved purple and some shade of turquoise.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Where to begin! I have worn a lot of stupid things in my time. Probably one of the dumbest/ugliest was this black dress with white letters and numbers all over it that looked very Culture Club, but it was 1989 or 1990 so I had no excuse.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My ass for a hat.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A maroon wristband with both a digital watch and a 'handy' zip pocket for storing (presumably) coins.

Probably worn with a pair of white trousers and a girly striped blouse.

Ahhh, the 80s...

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

One of those oh-so-ridiculous Hypercolour t-shirts that changed colour according to your body heat. What moron thought this was a brilliant idea?

cybele (cybele), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

A glittery bootlace tied round my head as a headband. Again, the 80s.

Also : pink fluorescent fingerless gloves over green fluorescent proper gloves. A Nik Kershaw T-shirt. Odd coloured fluorescent socks. A purple batwing jumper and blue ra-ra skirt with purple trim. Turquoise dungarees with a red and white stripey t-shirt underneath (I was so rocking the clown look at this point).

There is photographic evidence of all of this, but it's staying hidden.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No shoes. One black sock, one white sock. A long floral hippie skirt. A Trix t-shirt with that rabbit and "Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids!" written on it. A big floppy fisherman hat.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The dress was very lovely when I wore it. Then again it was Rocky Horror night.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A Hello Kitty costume that included a head which was nearly 5 feet across. And paw shoe/sock things.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was ten I had this white dress with big green spots you could probably see for miles. The thing is, I loved this dress and got a little upset when I spilled tomato soup all over it.

ThErEdNeD (ThErEdNeD), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A bright-fucking-lime green polo shirt from Old Navy. It was literally the last shirt I had that was clean.

That experience taught me to not wait until the very last minute to do laundry.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 13 June 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't own this thread. I have never worn anything I am now very embarassed about.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not going to name names...

Lara (Lara), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, maybe those tanga pants.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason my mom thought it was okay to dress me in a red and white pinstriped suit coat for my first communion. We have this photograph of my whole class assembled that day, all dressed in white, some of the guys in black suits, and then me, front row center, in that candy cane monstrosity. I look pretty psyched about it, too. I was too young to realize, I guess.

Dan i., Friday, 13 June 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

For my communion, my mum bought me black shoes as she thought white ones were impractical. She may as well have tattooed the sign on the best on my forehead...

Lara (Lara), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

In retrospect they were fantastic shoes: black patent with an ankle strap. At the time, though, I thought I was going straight to hell in my shiny black shoes of Satan.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 14 June 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely you mean 'sign of the best'.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 14 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

She was always very proud of her girls, my mum.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 14 June 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Bless your mother.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 14 June 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

railroad-stripe overalls

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 14 June 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i am now suspicious of n. because a)i don't believe he actually wore tanga pants (whatever they are) and b)i have misgivings about anybody who hasn't made a single fashion mistake. n. are you the kind of person who turns up to dress up parties (if they actually turn up at all) dressed as "my own doppelganger"?

minna (minna), Saturday, 14 June 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

those are only some of the reasons to be suspicious of n.

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 June 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I once wore an awful hawaiian shirt, I still have it, it's minging. One awful pair of brown pressed slacks which were kind of police style, they were a definite low point. I had a brief indie close phase at 15 or 16 when these things were worn.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 June 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother bought my clothes for me into my teens - I was given little or no choice in the matter. She didn't have a clue. A purple corduroy jacket and trousers plus a purple (slightly different purple, of course) dress shirt and tie was her choice of smart casual wear for going out. I didn't wear them much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 June 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's from my late 90s 'reclusive New Age spiritual guru' phase.

The Artist formerly known as Momus (Momus), Saturday, 14 June 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh please, you look good in that. (which could say more about my taste....).
My gold Gucci loafers come to mind. But hey they were GUCCI. heh

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I wore a Kangol helmet type hat in 1982 or thereabouts. I hadn't seen anyone downtown wearing them yet. I probably looked like such an ass. Rick Rubin liked it, though.

I also wore a loud, pink and black, stripey new wave skirt around my dorm at NYU to make fun of this girl Holly, my first Valley Girl friend. Or so I thought. She actually lived in Westwood. Her mom was Vera on Alice and her dad was Michael J. Pollard. I looked very Eight Street circa 1981. Very Sue Saad.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 14 June 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Skintight, violet purple jeans covered with a GRID pattern (yes, like graph paper).

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 14 June 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

graph paper = hott

Rupert!!

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That looked *good* on him though.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

God, the whole bridesmaid shenanigans were so bad for so many reasons. Such as looking like I was from New Jersey.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 15 June 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what is Rupert doing in the air? he looks very happy there.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Sunday, 15 June 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

We are so jaded. It takes a child to remind us that Rupert is a four legged mammal.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I forgot. My mum had a pattern for an A-line skirt and bolero set and she made me two of them. One was black corduroy with little orange and brown flowers on it and one was pale blue courduroy. Both used to be worn with a high-necked white frilly blouse. (I was about eight at the time, but still...)

My aunt and uncle also gave me a maroon velour jogging suit when I was about nine which looked like pyjamas but I was expected to wear out in public. (It had a v-neck top and wide leg trousers so it didn't even look like a jogging suit in any way - where was the zip front? Where was the elastic at the bottom of the trousers? Notwithstanding the fact I was the least athletic girl in the world). I expect J-Lo clones would love it these days, but for a nine year old girl in the early 80s it screamed "beat me up NOW!". I wore it once (round to their house after Christmas to thank them) then consigned it to the bottom of the wardrobe.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 June 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I remember the ugliest outfit I've ever worn. I was about 14, in the 8th grade, at Heath Junior High School. One day I turned up in denim bell-bottom pants, a white button-up top with flowy, hippie sleeves.. and a Greg Brady-esque fringed vest over it that's fringe flowed down nearly to my thighs. My classmates made fun of me all day long.
