i have never been, but admit to being intrigued by Pensacola. if i was to go, this is where i would go

St Augustines was lovely though, proper history and beautiful architecture.
Orlando was crap, apart from outlet shopping, and I did enjoy Disney stuff.

Everyones suggestions so far have been OTM. If you visit one place in Florida, go to St. Auggie and since Jax is close by, go there as well. GO IN WINTER! St Auggie is beautiful even if its become super-touristy. There is a cheep hostel there to stay at.
There is a reason North Florida is called the "Redneck Riviera". The nicest beach in those parts, though I haven't been around in years, is St George's Island. I know of nothing interesting in Pensacola. Why does it intruige you? Wakulla Springs is also where they shot _Creature from the Black Lagoon_. Nothing to great in Tallahassee, although I really want to go back one day to revisit childhood haunts. West of Tally are the Mariana Caverns which is worth a visit if you are inthe area.
The Bay Area and Miami have plenty of cool stuff. If your in the bay area, make sure to checkout the Dali Museum.
The Everglades have their one weird sort of beauty.
Coral Castle is also very kewl, in Homestead, south of Miami, just north of the Keys. The Keys are nice except for Key West, which is over-developed and sleazy.

Steve Delgado, the marketing manager of Arial Software, got a pleasant surprise when he checked his e-mail Monday morning, Sept. 13. His in-box had only 70 spam messages. "My e-mail [address] is all over the Internet, so I usually get about 200 over the weekend." And he has a theory to explain it: "I believe that the slowdown of spam e-mails in my in-box is directly related to the adverse weather in Florida," he says, "and that the hurricanes are disrupting spammers in Boca Raton and other cities with spammy reputations."

― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)
It's not as hot and swampy as Chicago two weeks ago. At least we have a sea breeze.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)
(and I'm sure Miami and stuff is much nicer than the part I'm familiar with, which is Northern Florida, so maybe I should stfu.)
― Mr. Que, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)
Northern Florida is essentially southern Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Where'd you live, Que?
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)
i never lived there, but i have close relatives that live in Jacksonville so i have to visit--and ha, this is soooooo OTM

― n/a, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks!
Joan Didion's Miami is likely the best book on the subject. Settled and conceived as a vacation getaway, Florida put little interest into infrastructure, so there's a border-town ethos to a lot of what goes on politically. In no way does Miami compare with San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, or any urban metropolis of your choice, but the hothouse decay is itself attractive.

― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)
Culturally? Well, hell. Miami could be further north than Pittsburgh in some places.

i am in the airport right now waiting to go home
i had a distaste for miami by the time i was leaving for school but now i love going home. its great there, s. fla (kendall, pinecrest, perrine) is an A+ place to raise kids imo. wouldn't mind moving back after school but dunno if its a possibility or not.
as for n fla, ive only really been to gainesville and tally but those are college towns so my pov is skewed

I am going to be in Orlando and the redneck riviera area next month for ~5 days. Orlando for three days, then that panhandlery (staying the night in Apalachicola). Looking for oysters and freaks. Can anyone make any suggestions? Also, I want to do Disney shit. Which Disney shit is better than the other Disney shit?

Lauderdale, West Palm, Tampa, Jacksonville, Ft Myers and a little blink-and-you'll-miss-it meth-hole disaster called Marianna. it's gross n' seedy reputation is deserved. but i can't quite bring myself to hate it.
