What's up with Letterman and guest hosts?

This isn't addressing the shingles-era guest hosts, but for the past few Fridays, he's had on other people -- Tom Arnold repugnant, Tom Green surprisingly solid -- but I'm wondering why. Was he told to slow down for health reasons? Does he just not give a shit anymore? Does anybody know anything?

Bruce Willis wasn't bad

I don't have a hard time believing he was told to slow down due to health reasons. Poor guy, with his open-heart surgery and his case of the shingles -- he needed a break, especially considering how few times he's taken time off in the past twenty or so years of being a late night talk show host.

And ah yes, Bruce Willis -- from when Letterman had the shingles. I think I could handle Bruce Willis guest hosting more often. He was pretty entertaining, yes.

But doesn't Bruce Willis think he's funnier than he really is? Granted, he got by on "Moonlighting" with effortless charm, but everything since then, from his "Friends" appearances to the Letterman stuff, looks a bit forced. Give me Bonnie Hunt any day...now she kicked some ass.

Funny you should mention that, Erick, because that's exactly the same thing I was thinking about him when he was on Letterman this week. He came out with this hairpiece made of grass, which I'll admit was kind of funny for about three seconds, but then he proceeded to mug and grin throughout the entire chat as though he was the wittiest guy ever, and nothing he said was as funny as he seemed to think it was.

According to MSN, Letterman has been officially diagnosed with T.A.S., which is why he's taking more time off now.

(T.A.S., for those unfamiliar, stands for Tired-Ass Syndrome.)

Oh! So you must be talking about a second time Bruce Willis guest hosted, instead of the first time he filled in! I only remember from when he guest hosted during the actual time Letterman had the shingles (and I liked them THEN), and I know Letterman's already recovered from them so this must be a different time. Well, then, the first time Bruce Willis guest hosted I liked him. Haven't seen any of the recent eps, unfortunately.

Elvis Costello was the worst one. That stupid song-monologue sent me into paroxysms of silent fury; by the time he got on to being cute with the card-throwing thing for like five solid minutes I was practically biting my fucking tongue off. Just throw the fucking card and get it over with you chimpy fuck!

Of course but then I changed channels, so maybe he magically became a fantastic host beyond that point but i doubt it.

As much as I like Elvis, Dan, I agree that he was...pretty rough. Who did you like the best?
