there is a tower of some sort, but i dont know what it is exactly. perhaps i shall look later on

isn't it a shot tower, like the one near chelsea barracks?

(ie they droped molten lead from it into water: by the time it had fallen that far, it had formed into near-exact spheres = perfect musket-balls)

The splendid brick tower, which is the museum’s dominant feature, is in fact a Stand Pipe tower, not a chimney, dating from 1867. Visitors can find out more about its purpose during a guided tour or from our Guide Book and leaflets available in the museum’s book shop.

A standpipe functions a safety valve, basically you have a column of water that works like a manometer, when the pressure is too high it blows the water outout the top of the pipe, this then rushes down into the firebox quenching the fire and cooling the boiler.
