Iron Pier on the Long Island Sound all the way babeeeee!!!! My family got screwed out of my great-grandmother's bungalow on the Sound :(. Stupid evil new wives :( (Who wants to crash my grandparents' place and use their residents' sticker?)

Don't forget the Bay! (Or do, if you're my mom, ha ha)

Destroy: Atlantic Ocean.

Once we drove all the way out to Orient Point in a fit of boredom, that was incredible. It was also November, which I kind of don't recommend cos it's quite cold out there.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I vacationed in Montauk in 1979 and 1988, and I remember sizable, gorgeous beaches. I visited for a few hours in 2002, and the beach erosion that had taken place was absolutely shocking the tide was licking the fence that protected the shoddy hotels.

Montauk-the-town is unbearably depressing. It's just a bunch of restaurants and souvernir stores that solely to cater to the tourists. It has no 'inner life.'

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

We should rent a place in Montauk and pretend we're Lee Radziwill and Elizabeth Taylor and Andy Warhol.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is Michael Jackson?

Fire Island is the only one I've been to bar coney island. Great lobster. I was 9 at the time.

TS: Duck Farms vs Vineyards

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 19 June 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, the big duck! My mom is obsessed with the big duck. I've been inside it, it's like a store in there. A store of duck things.

PS felicity, YOU'RE A DICK!

Montauk

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
I really want to go Montauk.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't go during the winter, it's cold there. Trust me. We should go though, it's nice otherwise.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But frozen beach misty water packed sand bleak lighthouse sounds so romantic! Okay, can we make it there and back in time for Hi-Fi?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

If we drive quite fast.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens! We don't have a car ;)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you even take a train to Montauk? It must take hours!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I know you can, cause there is a picture of that very lighthouse scene along with an ad for LIRR on every other subway car!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There used to be an express LIRR train from NYC to Montauk going out Friday and back Sunday. I don't know if that's still running.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

But it must take hours!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the Cannonball and it takes 3 hours, which is must faster than it would be driving on a Friday night.

http://mta.info/lirr/hamptonsreserve/ReserveService.htm#Schedule

Anyway, nobody asked me and I will be out of town but my 2 cents is that it's extremely unrealistic to go to Montauk, come back and send Matos off in the same day.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Unrealistic is my motto. However a three hour train ride!!!!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(where are you going, Felicity?)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

We have a corporate retreat in a quaint Midwestern resort community where the shops on Main Street are all puns like "Fit for a Queen" and "Oh My Gauze." I am not making this up.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

How does one actually maintain a business like "Oh My Gauze"?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You pronounce it "Oh My Goth."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still up for a Montauk trip.

Oyster Bay is pretty beautiful but I'm sure there's someone here who knows more about that part of the island and can fill you in on specifics.

In response to the original post - FIRE ISLAND! I grew up there and there is no contest really. It's amazing and unlike any other place I've been.

ENBB, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

Resolved: Every beach from New York to North Carolina is pretty much the same.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

(except for the people who go to them, of course)

How is Oyster Bay?

that part of LI has so many amazing beaches and nature areas and none of them are in oyster bay. there’s a nice bird sanctuary.

Iron Pier on the Long Island Sound all the way babeeeee!!!!

iron pier is… okay-ish? if you’re cool with ppl driving SUV’s across the beach, which I’m not particularly

No, š˜'š˜® Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 June 2023 05:32 (two years ago)

Elizabeth A. Morton refuge for a sneaky win because it *shudders* involves walking to get there.
