Well, not exactly. Orin Hatch thinks its a good idea to destroy people's pc's who share files.Im sure his music is in high demand on the sharing circuit. Discuss.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

right i had a look, i guess you donate a fiver and get started but i cant see how this is done on the front page (the getting started i mean), i read some of the FAQ but to no avail?????

james (james), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(you don't have to donate a fiver though it is nice)

You download and install the software - it just means clicking on an .exe file once you've downloaded it, then you can choose what files to share and connect to their server and away you go!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

right that sounds simple enough, i'll have another look thank you very much

james (james), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

right i see where i was going wrong, i was entering the download section and it looked like the page was erroring out but it wasnt i just didnt click on the 149 bit. I'll have a go when im at home.

Thankyou all for your help.

james (james), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i owe ed a brewery-full of pints etc and yet my not-able-to-access slsk mac "nightmare" continues :(

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

slsk - gsdali

Mark, how about friday for another bout of slsk bidness. I'll get the bus this time.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

reduced number of songs due to making space for kate to gig off my laptop on saturday.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My tracks are in no order and all the listed folders are empty pretty much, I'm going to sort that out at the weekend I hope.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pretty easy to find on slsk -- nicolew15. But I only have a lot of crazy crap or stuff most people have probably downloaded already.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you dont have to pay to use KaZaa as far as i know - Diet Kazaa or Kazaa Lite are the scaled down cheapo versions that do just the same job (tho you'd be wise to get the KaZaa Download Accelerator thing along with them)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a uk kazaa site or is it kazaa.com?

james (james), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s, if you're not a dumb ass as i am (read: if you are i-nerd) then you can install mldonkey and access slsk. i am close to glueing thom to the chair so he HAS TO FIGURE IT OUT. :-)

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i shall pass that onto ed, nath

my job = coffeemonkey

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

James, try Kazaa Lite, it's Kazaa but without the spyware (a good thing). The site itself generates a lot of pop-ups but the software doesn't (unlike the normal version of Kazaa).

Alfie (Alfie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto on the Kazaa Lite recommendation.

I've feverishly been ripping my CD collection lately in an attempt to have all my CDs available on MP3 for my vacation next month. It's kind of therapeutic actually. Anyway, I'm up to 3000-odd files shared. I'm online at the moment (spectatorr), although I'm not at home, in case anyone wants to have a pilfer.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

of course you can always dc connect. not much good music on there though.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

downloading music is over rated: sharing ebooks (esp. philosophy) and films analyzed in film schools is where it's at (to me).

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have downloaded kazaa lite software stuff and have a few tracks in the shared file how do i go about putting the tracks on my own hard drive as when i try to send to file it errors out stating that it is read only protected!! how do i get round this as id like to divide and zip the files so as not to take up to much space on the puter?

remeber - dumb ass at computers

james (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico, you're aware that there is an ILM room aren't you? Just join it (and put it on autojoin, so you enter the room on startup) and you can browse fellow ilxorers shared folders (and chat occasionally)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't download music but I have to say that Hatch's comments are just about the dumbest thing I've read lately (that's saying a lot).

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/03/30/cnvirgin130.xml

what does this mean for UK downloaders?

will bt and co follow in their footsteps? will people desert virgin for a less big-brotherly ISP?

can you get round this by signing up to one of those eastern european ip-hider sites?

can virgin legally force this rule on people or will everyone have to re-sign up to their contract?

is the uk the first country in the world where ISPs are doing this?

will torrenty/warez sites peoples come up with a workaround anytime soon?

s.rose, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno, but I was kicked off BT Internet in the dialup days for breaking some terms+conditions which hadn't been in place when I signed up and which I hadn't known had come into effect (they probably emailed the new t+c to an account I never checked or something).

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Most ISPs already speed limit filesharing ports anyway.

Surely though people go for the expensive high speed links because they can download illegally I guess they figure this will push people towards legal downloading.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

LOL at Virgin ads on the tube which push how much and how quickly you can d/l music and films.
