What The Hell is Primerica...

And why are they trying to "recruit" me to become a "team leader" in their firm? I guess this is such an "opportunity" they can't even be bothered to tell me WHAT THE HELL THE JOB IS.

Case in point:

"My name is Kathy Horsky and I am a Division Leader with Primerica Financial Services with 6 years of recruitment and training experience in identifying qualified individuals. I have reviewed your resume posted on CareerBuilder.com and feel that you may be a good candidate to work with Primerica, a division of Citigroup. We are expanding and developing over 50 branches throughout the state of Connecticut. We're looking for people with leadership skills to assist with the hiring, training, and developing of these branches. In reviewing your resume, I have identified qualities that make you an ideal candidate for our company such as your managerial experience. You can find our web site at www.citigroup.com."

This is the 3rd e-mail I've rec'd in 24 hours, never mind the 4 or 5 phone solicitations I've rec'd in the past year (including 2 calls from the same guy, 6 months apart, who can't even remember me telling him I wasn't interested the first time).

I think they're the credit card division of Citi, but I'm not sure. Don't they have a web site you can check out?

Primerica is like America, only sometimes it can change itself into a semi.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I got contacted by them. I only got one email and one phone call, so I guess I am not as special as David.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dave, i've gotten the same email day in and day out for two months. All from different people at Primerica. Its bullshit.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and its similar to my company I work for. STAY THE FUCK AWAY!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like bill collectors to me. They're all hiring like mad. Take the job if you like amphetimines and blood-sucking.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, collection agencies are awesome. Check out Jim Thompson's description of working for one during the Depression in Roughneck.
US economy not so hot? Collection agencies are probably one of yr most secure places of employment. At least in terms of not getting laid off. Burn out, death by violence, that's another matter. But it's not like Americans are going to suddenly STOP living beyond their means!

STAY AWAY: went to what I thought was going to be a job interview (about 2 years ago or so), show up, and there's like 30 people there. They give us a hour presentation about how great Primerica is. Long story short, they wanted ME to pay for 'training'--it was at least over $200, and then you don't even have a steady income. Something about having to make 'contacts' and have them invest in something.
I knew it sounded shady--who makes you pay for training?--so I asked my aunt who works in the insurance business about Primerica. She said there like Citibank's evil cousin, using its name to give an air of legitimacy to their questionable outfit.
STAY AWAY

(yay! i only made the there/their/they're mistake once!)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

From what oops is saying, its sounds like a classic Multi-level Marketing scheme. I am surprised any legit company would have anything to do with one.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I figured it was a bit shady when I was invited to a "recruitment seminar" or some shit, which I find odd, seeing this supposed multination company using the same hiring strategies & techniques as UPS. Many thanks for the info & head's up (tho Colin's description makes it sound kewl, like I'd be some sort of Lost Boy a la Keifer or Alex Winters) (or Edward Herrmann!!!).

BTW, Rosemary, if it salves your pride any, I'm pretty sure you've gotten more e-mail from destitute African dignitaries than I have.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get those emails either!

oops' description sounds like what I thought this whole shady business might be about . I looked at their website and saw the "it only costs you X amount of dollars!" and thought " now that doesn't sound dodgy AT ALL!"

Primerica is a division of Citigroup and the way it functions is similar to real estate. You need to convince people to invest with Primerica. If you don't , you don't eat. You're best bet, is to recruit others to work for you (it's sort of like a pyramid; you get a piece of their action whilest sitting on your ass).

It's a lot of mooching off your family and friends and you quickly make yourself the annoying guy who's always trying to get everyone to invest.

What Primerica offers is great advice and wise investing strategies, but I wouldn't want to work for them/myself. You also have to pay $200 for a state test which is not refundable if you fail.

God it sounds like that XFiles episode... the "hiding in plain view" one with the telemarketers.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, did you go to the same seminar I did at that hotel in Manhattan? I think it was West 23rd or 34th street? Might've been lower, all I know is it was west and I got all dressed up like a dope for this great thing (I thought) one evening and almost as soon as I stepped in, I thought, "Oh crap."

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 19 June 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha, me too. think i wore a suit. but mine was out here in Chicago. everyone there gave me a really bad vibe.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 June 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My 401K is managed by Primerica. Am I in trouble?

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 19 June 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

eight years pass...

hmm, i think the recruiter who called me over the weekend is from primerica, although she didn't identify her affiliation. she sent an e-mail about an interview and it was from a gmail address and the sender field was just her name with the acronym "pfs" appended. seems fishy. i agreed to meet for the interview although i didn't get around to doing the basic detective work until tonight.

primerica has never sought me out before; i'm well acquainted with all the other scammers. this is a scam, right?
