hstencil, Friday, 20 June 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, fuck, where's Toronto on that list? This is an outrage!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah! Have a great time! That day between the SF and LA shows -- will you be already down in LA on the Thursday night? If so, let us FAP or something. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

H, ill be at the Troubador for sure! is there anyway you can hook a brutha up on the list?

chaki (chaki), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

doingf what with them?

Ed (dali), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you gonna be doing, stence? My friend Chris got fired as Bill's touring drummer for reading onstage. He was bored!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

WOW!!! You'll be in my town on the 1st of July! I have to work that day but I hope I get to go by the West End and say hi anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, fuck, where's Toronto on that list? This is an outrage!

Detroit gets no love either. I've noticed a lot of bands doing that lately, did they find out I live there or something?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats! I am so glad you are hitting the Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville. I lived there basically during college. They have the best sushi in Virginia too and ask the owner Atsushi to sing you a few songs.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

:-D

i'm out of town on the 16th but i will make sure that a bottle of bourbon gets your way.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude no Boston or Providence??

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be managing the tour. I'll try to hook up guest lists, tho I don't know yet how that's gonna work.

hstencil, Friday, 20 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

are you going to be backing Smog up or doing something solo.
also, the Regina (and possibly the Saskatoon) date is with the New Pornographers.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

YAY! I can't come to the NYC fap but a little of ILXNYC is coming to me. woohoo

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

tour managing i.e. not playing but making sure the ship goes forward.

hstencil, Friday, 20 June 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and talking to the young ladies. You can definitely hit a lot of Waffle Houses this way.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The show appears to be sold out here.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Come see it in Regina then Bryan, bring Jodi, and we can have a half-ass FAP!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

see you in Seattle, you slag!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard young ladies described as "Waffle Houses" before.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan if it's already sold out, I can try to get you and Anthony on the list. I will have my new laptop with me on tour, so I can be reached via email.

hstencil, Friday, 20 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard young ladies described as "Waffle Houses" before.

Enough with your syrupy sentiments.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

your\'re from the city, Dan.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be in NYC then, Horace! Sorry!

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony? Easton? He's in Edmonton (sorry!). Myself and Jodi are the only two ILXors here currently. I will get back to you about that, though.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(in my best USA accent) Isn't Edmonton just down the road from Wpg?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The space between the Oilers and the Jets is a gulf that cannot be bridged.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey, I didn't know you went to UVA, or were from C-ville, or what-have-you. I frequent the Tokyo Rose and have met lots of great people there. :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

YEAH! Me and Sarah should definitely be at the Charlottesville show unless something unavoidable comes up. Hstencil, can my band open? (that's kind of a joke. kind of.)

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love C'ville and lived there for 5 years and go back every so often (was just there for the WTJU rock marathon in Feb.) We probably know some of the same people, although right when I left a lot of the mainstays also decided to go on their way. But I worked at Plan 9 at Albemarle and drove one of the UTS buses for 4 years. And the Tokyo Rose was my 3rd home (behind WTJU, and the bus).

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, seriously, can my band open?

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

NA, you need to call the club and talk to whomever book shows there.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

NA just find out whoever is doing the booking now at the Rose. It usually is one of the DJs in the rock department at WTJU. Or it has been for at least 5-7 years. And ask them. It's all so very easy there.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

or just start flyering for the show with your band on it and show up to play. weirder has happened there.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats Stencil! Have a great time on the road, and just think of all those sorry fucks still stuck at the bank.

Detroit gets no love either. I've noticed a lot of bands doing that lately, did they find out I live there or something?

Yeah! What up with that? Although, I saw Smog in 1997 or so at dearly beloved Zoots. I think there were like 30 or so people there. Bill was surly. Shockah!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I just emailed the Tokyo Rose people. They aren't very communicative usually, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Either way, I should be there and I'll say hi.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

NA let me get back to you. What is you band name BTW?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll email you, Carey, don't want to clutter up hstencil's glorious thread.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ok im going to buy my ticket tonight.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, hurrah for hstencil (who I will meet next month)!

Sarah MClusky (coco), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

wow congrats! I didn't know this was a talent of yours. Are you going to be the mean tour manager or the sweet-but-tough tour manager?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, congrats.
get a boston/cambridge gig on the tour! KINDness all around.

kephm, Friday, 20 June 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! I'll see you in Portland, Stence. Congrats!

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll totally go to the Troubadour in LA!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool! Now I won't have to hear you constantly whining anymore. (seriously, congratulations)

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm there at the Troubadour in LA also.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I may might could go to the one in Mpls. It's a school night tho! And I think the Fall are on the 27th here, so I might be showed out by then.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

hey thanks a lot hstencil, you weren't kidding about this internet marketing thing!

bill callahan and dan koretsky (gygax!), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations, hstencil - enjoy your time on the road and take lots of pictures and keep a detailed diary - they'll come in handy at some point.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 20 June 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

now, are you going to be the tour manager for smog or (smog)?

(deflects gygax's bourbon for h to self)

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 20 June 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, you know I'm cheering for you. Have fun, and pics are a must!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You're wise not to have FL on that list. Who, in these rolling hills, has heard of Smog?

Sorry to miss meeting you, though.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent, I was planning to see Smog anyway.

See you at the Ottobar! BTW - is taping allowed?

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, taping isn't allowed. Bill hates this.

Tour diary has begun at www.pataphysics-lab.com/other. I promise it will get more detailed than it is now.

hstencil, Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

h!, I will definitely try and make it to one of the SF/Berkeley dates - I am living about five minutes from the Starry Plough for the next two months.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

*gets the stealth rig out*

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to have missed madison.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 30 June 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I just found out DESTROYER is opening for Smog in Portland -> I am the happiest boy in the world.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

h, what are you doing the evening of your apparent travel day - July 14th? where you staying? is bill gonna be up in guerneville with his ex-roomies/the bananafish folx? lemme know!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, email me your details/name at hstencil@yahoo.com, and I'll try to get you into the show. Same goes for you, Chris (altho Portland might be pretty full, guest-list-wise).

Gygax!, I think we're staying with friends of the guitarist somewhere in Northern CA on the 14th. Don't think we'll make it to the Bay Area until the day of the Berkeley gig. Are you gonna be around now?

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-sus. The things you miss when you're banned. So this is why hstencil isn't returning his mail. And I thought he no love me no more.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love you kate but I'm too busy fulfilling bizarre requests and driving a van to get back in touch. Lame I know.

hstencil, Thursday, 3 July 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Joel, I won't be able to make the show. I'll be in Alaska then. :-(

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 3 July 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

CALL ME EMAIL ME ITS ON SUNDAY AND I LOVE YOU.
(need to know if i need to buy another ticket etc)

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 4 July 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'll see you in Austin, my friend. We shall have many beers. Together or separately. I'm sure it'll happen at any rate. But I'll look for you... e-mail me with a decent pic of you. That one on friendster isn't too helpful.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 4 July 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, email me your phone number. We will definitely have plenty of time to hang out in Edmonton after the show.

hstencil, Friday, 4 July 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, I shall also see you in Austin then since I will be driving down for this.

hot times in river city!!! woooHOOOOO

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 4 July 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand, babe. I know how touring is! How's your liver holding up? ;-)

kate (kate), Friday, 4 July 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope all is well. I am procrastinating as usual. You picked a good time to leave NYC nothing is really going on.

Eve, Sunday, 6 July 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

did you get my email ? (scared)

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, we're at the club, I'll see you tonight. Sorry I haven't had a chance to write back yet, I'm hella busy, but tomorrow begins three days off...

Sorry to the ILXors who called me last night. I was manning the merch booth, y'all called right before (Smog) was supposed to play, so it was too loud to hear anything.

hstencil, Sunday, 6 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah rah Stence rah rah! Great show last night and it was very nice to meet you. (Also it occurs to me that the other reason people didn't buy much merch is that you can get any of those records for a few bucks cheaper elsewhere in town. And the generally impoverished state of Portland's economy, of course.)

Journey on, young man.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, so how did the Seattle show go? Stence, hope to catch you in NYC hopefully sometime before the end of the year (I'm planning on flying over sometime in the fall.. dunno when)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Seattle kinda sucked, other than seeing Michaelangelo Matos. Where was Jen Nstop? Why were the people at the Croc such dicks?

Hmmm, Chris, is $14 really too steep for a CD? I had everything $2 cheaper in Seattle, but was worried that those prices were shortchanging Bill, so...

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, Chris, is $14 really too steep for a CD?

Most times I've seen bands sell their own stuff at a show the prices are usually $10, I have to admit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, 11 days in Canada has skewed my good business sense. $10 is way too low though, we'd hardly get anything after settling with Drag City at that rate. Okay, I guess they're going back to $12.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

In Portland, you can get Julius Caeser on vinyl (new) for $9 (no sales tax, either!) and on CD for I think $12. The newer stuff is a buck or two more.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

$10 is way too low though, we'd hardly get anything after settling with Drag City at that rate.

I'm sure it's all down to how you deal with the label, as you note. If anything sounds like Drag City is charging you guys too much, but I'll step out of that kind of debate. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes, when American bands play here, they forget to change the prices on their merch and you get really really good deals.

I'd like to think that when you by as direct from the artist like that, that there are less grubby hands to pay, so the price should be lower. But who knows. Touring is expensive, esp. in Western Canada.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Smog AND Momus within weeks of each other! I think i'm going to explode........*Boom*! What a mess I made! Please, if there is a Jesus or whatever, let the NY show not be sold out. I'm glad it's at Bowery. Momus is playing at The Knitting Factory I think...I hate that place, the new one that is.

django (django), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

touring is cheaper in Western Canada! All the promoters paid us tons of money (American dollars, thank you) for guarantees, plus money for hotels, plus money for "immigration" (which we didn't get charged at the border for anyway). No offense, but we mostly took your country for suckers, Horace.

Ned, DC is charging us cost on everything. I'd like there to be more of a 50-50 split, but if we have to take a smaller margin so the shit will move, fuck it. I actually think sales are a little slow since we're outta t-shirts (but we'll get more in SF).

Please refrain from mentioning the M word in this thread again, thanks.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, $12US is as high as any touring band's merch stand CDs ever go for before my "Eh, I'll just find it used instead" instinct gets triggered. I don't want you guys to lose money on this, obviously.. but if $14 isn't going to well, and you can't resell those CDs back to Drag City at cost, then I figure the $12 price is the way to go. But, heh, this is really none of my business.

Well damn.. sorry the Seattle show didn't go that well.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well the turnout was good considering we were up against Spoon. Could you do me a favor and burn down the Croc for me, though? That place blows.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

whew! Just checked Spoon's tourdates and thank God we're not up against 'em again (tho we're playing with them in Phoenix). Altho I think we kicked their asses last night - the show was pretty full. Going up against Spoon and the Dixie Chicks, I thought that was gonna be rough.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Bill's mom and dad (!) came to the show last night. It was weird, Bill broke down and cried during "Dress Sexy at My Funeral."

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Could you do me a favor and burn down the Croc for me, though? That place blows.

Dude, supersize that dirt for me. I wanna know how severe a molotov I need to make, and wanna know why. (haha, I have nothing against the Croc, actually, but cherubic and friendly the staff are not)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

People must present momus with trucker hats all over the USA.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am so takin a photo of me and Momus in trucker hats at his Seattle gig... Chop Suey is just a block away from Value Village, the cheap trucker hat outlet store, practically)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(OK, sorry Stence.. no more M words again)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, if it's not sold out, myself and the good mr anthony kyle monday are planning to come to the Berkeley show tomorrow.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil,

i can not make it tomorrow night as i have a work thingy but suddenly i'm in town tomorrow (but i might have a late night date and i don't know if she is into the smog), do you have a cell phone? there's a neato bar around the corner from the GAMH called the hemlock and it would be fun to meet for a drink! actually i owe you dinner so let me know if you want me to take you out for a good gourmet veggie meal (there's some shishi veggie place just down the hill from GAMH).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, e-mail me yer cell as well, Stence. It might help in terms of general planning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

h,

msp and |\|03ll@ will be coming tomorrow, i am gonna try to get something into your hands but i'm not sure if i can swing it cuz matt is totally moving and i may not see him until wednesday (to say yet another brief but tearful goodbye).

anyways, send me your c-phone # and i'll try to work something out during the day maybe on wednesday, like a lunch date if you're free or early dinner(?).

hugglez,
me

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

calling planet hstencil, please come in, do you read me?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I just emailed you my cell number, g. I don't have much to do until 5:30 load-in, but I should be relatively free until doors, which I think are at 8. Gimme a call.

hstencil, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

HI!

i'm making 6:30 reservations at a veggie restaurant i've never been to, but there's another veggie place right near there we can check out if you're feeling more mellow.

hehee!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for dinner, gygax!, it was excellent. It was so much fun to hang out tonight, I really appreciated it.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 July 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you are welcome! it was very nice to see you again, i hope it happens again soon.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)
