Big Brother, the latest rumour

Can this be true?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely for a start, it should be the most stupid one they get rid of? They can't afford to lose anyone else with a smattering of intelligence, can they?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ailsa what's the story, i can't link

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tonight's task is supposedly a general knowledge quiz. The winner will be immediately taken from the house and flown to South Africa to swap places with the winner of a similar quiz being held in their Big Brother today. They won't be allowed to tell the other housemates that they are going and the first they will know of it is when a new, South African, housemate turns up tomorrow (or however long it takes to fly them from South Africa).

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well the incomer will presumably be smart also?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

assuming this isn't totally madey-uppy

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

also smart != good at general knowledge, necessarily, but whatever

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Other link here

I s'pose so. But I don't know what kind of impact any smart-alec coming in from another show will make. No late entrants have yet made any sort of impression have they? (with the except of ginger Tim, and that's surely not what we want). So they will probably be booted out relatively quickly leaving us with the same lot again. They really haven't thought this through...

Cross-post (that answers two posts up)

Then:

also smart != good at general knowledge, necessarily

No, but I imagine Ray (clickety-click is the bingo term for 5?!?!) will not win any quizzes. You know what I mean, I hope...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

RickyT should enter. Just 'cause.

Also, this is amazing. (If it's true). How gimmicky can you get? ("BB: where 'gimmicky' goes to live.")

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Presumably the South African guy is flying over to bartend in the secret pub.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

much hilarity will ensue over South African's accent presumably ('aid lake to numinaate Kemeron for quowteeng Deuteronomy et me orl bluddy daay')

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 21 June 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It has occured to me that the reward room ain't that great. I really wouldn't want to eat an 8-course meal ever, and especially not in a room I couldn't get out of. It's gonna be like those medieval banquets where they eat 'til they throw up, and then just carry on eating. Nush is lucky.

Anyhow, it seems this story isn't true. Unless, Cameron is being fed before he has to go.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

if i was in there i'd definitely instigate a food fight of the highest order

i wouldn't have been able to indicate where Cameroon or Kazakhstan were (tho wouldve guessed close)

Nush and Tania are lookin' dam fine tonight

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they are going to fly Nush to Sow Theffrica while the others are all gorging themselves in the Treat Room.

C J (C J), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be great...i'm hoping a tube will pop down from the roof and suck her upwards

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

by roof i meant ceiling, and by suck i meant suck

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

J K Rowling will arrive any minute now in a cloud of floo powder, wave a magic (phoenix feather) wand and make Nush Disapparate/Apparate. Or something.

C J (C J), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, looks like Cameron is off to SA for a week, and this will give him a two-week amnesty from eviction. New South African person will join the house on Monday!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't it be cool if the person from SA was Mitch?!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If they want to get a South African in, they should bring in Louis Moholo. Then he can teach the BB housemates about the rudiments of improv and free jazz and we can enjoy some good freakouts! ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not necessarily a South African. It's a pan-african show.

I love that it just happened to be Cameron because he was the one to go into the diary room. (no quiz)

The others still don't know what has happened to him.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

GREATEST BB EVAH!

(marcello's proposal would take it off the charts, of course, into greatest anything evah...) (i already dreamed of moholo doing something like that party trick edgard varese would do, with ordinary non-musician dinnerguests... getting them each to come up with a single non-word mouth sound, then quickly writing and conducting a little soundpiece using the guests as the inspired and amazed instruments)

(i mean, they already had the practice, with the bell-ringing thing SO THIS IS STILL ON THE CARDS!!)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Cameron is swapped with someone from Cameroon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dearie me

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope Cameron eats some caramel macaroons

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and takes a camera

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah - so the South African version is the one that contains housemates from lots of African nations - I seem to recall that there was some controversy over Zimbabwe (?) being represented by a white person

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Namibia not zimbabwe

Ed (dali), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i suppose that works in the same way the UK one does in representing fairly accurately the ratio of diversity of races across the continent (reason why there is usually just one or two people who are anything other than caucasian, so statistically that would mean there are around 6 million people in the UK who are not of caucasian descent - not sure how accurate that is but seems right)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What, like every fucker in Britain is Scottish? And since well is Ireland part of Britain?

(is jealous of charming celts with lilting accents, marvellous senses of humour and sexual charisma in buckets. Also, hates fun.)

Mark C (Mark C), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the non-white population is more like 3 million than 6, but I may be a bit out. I seem to remember it being a little over 5%. It varies hugely by area obviously - where I live it's 65%.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i was actually surprised there were TWO scottish people in the house as obv. it conflicts with the '1 in 10' theory suggested above. but seeing as TV is dominated by Celtic voices anyway they probably thought what the hell, we'll throw in 2 for the price of 1

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't watched any BB today so I'm still not sure whether this is real or some sort of elaborate hoax. I mean, surely Cameron would need to have a passport with him in order to fly off abroad at a moment's notice? What if his Mum couldn't find it for him, or if he didn't even have a passport?

Has he actually boarded a plane yet, i.e. have we seen him do this?

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I would reckon that while they're in the house they give over their passports as if they're staying in a European hotel, so they can't do a bunk, and they'll have had to have passports in the first place to participate, or have sorted it out.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope that they put Cameron in the hold with loose crates of snakes in order to prevent interaction with fellow passengers

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i assume that all the contestant probably did a general test during the selection process that featured questions like 'tell us about your last trip abroad' (this way BB would know they had a valid passport and whether they like flying or not)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sending someone who is terrified of flying, and showing them having a nervous breakdown in the departure lounge, would have been an excellent piece of TV!

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently the African BB contestant we're getting is the one who was proved to be best at making cocktails in their weekly task

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly it's not me jel. and yeah, this season of BB (called "big brother africa", last year we had "big brother south africa" where it was just south african ppl) is made up of foaxfrom all difft african countries. i don't know if this rumour is true, i haven't been following the show.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want some specific info, satellite tv here has TWO dedicated BB channels with like loads of camera angles to choose from and fancy voting buttons and participant bios etc. etc.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

okay i just read the thread properly and it is true obv

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mitch - this is your chance to get in the BB Commentary fun!!! Surely!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless, Cameron is being fed

If he were being Fed, that would have been funnier. It could also explain his new hairdo?

So can the incomer be voted out by our lot then? Does (s)he get to vote? What's the point of Cameron getting a proxy vote while he's away if he doesn't know what's going on over here?

Basically, WHY?!?!?!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

http://bigbrother.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds4348.html

"You are now an ambassador for Big Brother," it went on. "You are not permitted to tell fellow housemates this.

"Your first job as ambassador is to deliver a message from Big Brother. In return you will be granted a two-week amnesty from nominations. You will however still be able to make your own nominations.

"It will take some time to deliver your message, but you will return to the Big Brother House soon."

"Big Brother wishes you to know your message needs to be delivered to Africa."

Any guesses as to what the message is?

"BBUK is also full of cunts and wankers" perhaps

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we can infer that no, they won't be able to nominate the new contestant. If Cameron gets a two-week amnesty from noms and is guaranteed to be able to return to the BBUK house then we can assume it'll be the same for the BBA contestant. Will the BBA contestant get to be interviewed by Davina Macaw?

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way - BBA is going to be screened on E4. Bang goes what little life I have left.

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

less BBA, more BA

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

http://server33.hypermart.net/thea-team/ba10.jpg

'aint gittin on no plane to south africa sucka!'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we going to get Big Brother Africa's Little African Brother too?

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder if the Spanish version really is called El Hermano Grande (with El Hermano Grande Del Hermano Pequeno weekdays in addition)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It'd be great if popular beat combo Big Brovaz were put in the house.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

with their big brothers

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The African housemate coming in is Gaetano, a 30-year-old guy from Uganda.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all very peculiar I'm not sure how it's gonna pan out! hmmm

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd watch it if they followed marcello's suggestion.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a great gimmick
how common is english throughout africa?
is the african big brother done through english?

robin (robin), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it should be done through gesture

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it is in south africa, so i'd imagine mostly english.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but what about uganda?

robin (robin), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I have had a lot of wine, yes, but I have this image in my head and it's of bigbrother ridng a motorbike over a big sharkin a tank of water

chris in swanky free intenet style hotel, Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

who's big brother? yours?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed the Sunday episode *again* bah. I haven't seen it once this series.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

so did i :(

what does dr peter collett do the rest of the year? is it ok if i watch?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have hired him to comment on my behaviour.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr P C was conspic by his absence on yesterday's lovely Sunday psych out. There was a touching Steph <3 Cameron bit.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

sunday episode was - 'increasing sexual tension', 'ray getting wrong signals off tanyah', 'nush and gos = emo. troubleshooters'

so...as usual nowt startling - exdept colletts differing ears - pointy and roundy.

the other prof namedropped a few theories for extra points.

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I dreamed about Nush. I feel I know her intimately now.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It said that Stef and Cam spend 70% of their waking hours in each other's company, and then there was some old waffle about ropmance developing from close personal friendship bonds blah blah. Subsequently almost every shot of Cameron showed him touching Nush or (obviously) thinking about touching her. Not inviting Nush to reward room = bizarro fishboy pigtail pulling with added sneaky hug possibilities.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Cameron did say that he thought Nush would be able to keep herself entertained, whereas Tania would have whined and chewed her arm off if she had been left on her own.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But that would have been so cool!

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 23 June 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling she could just detach and reattach it at will, like one of those mannequins in the window of Top Shop that have obscenely prominent nipples.

j0e (j0e), Monday, 23 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
Apparently one of the Talk Sport radio DJs will be in the house this year...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit....

(probably John Kearns)

Patrick Kinghorn, Friday, 21 May 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

props to pete for spotting the 'black friday' teaser posters around town were in the Big Brother font. i was sceptical at the time but trailers during ER on wednesday seemed to bear him out.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there are two round my way - 'BLACK FRIDAY COMETH' AND 'THE END IS NIGHT' - i figured it was BB5 because of the typeface. I then shrugged and went about my business as usual although secretly I am excited about the prospect they have taken my ideas on board and this is reflected in the vibe of the presentation this time (booby traps, pranks and having to evict people to their face while dressed as clowns)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

NIGH not NIGHT obv.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Black Friday schtick is the double bill of THE END OF FRIENDS + THE START OF NASTY BIG BROTHER

Pete (Pete), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The BB motif is entire in it's dominance though, which is fair enough

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(can something be dominated just a little bit or is it entire by definition?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(well, I think you can be dominated just a little bit. But what do I know?)

The Star was claiming the other day that one of this year's shortlisted contestants is a pre-op TS who is saving up for a private operation.

I assume that, if this was true, then she will have been struck off the contestant shortlist as soon as the story appeared.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 21 May 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell. Wot Talksport is all about I hear Bigotron will soon be with them.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't give St3v3n Wells publicity, Dave, it only encourages him.

Did any ILXors apply for this year's, then?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

well N's been quite quiet recently...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)
