Would anyone admit to seeing Bruce Almighty and liking it?

I would. The Hulk was sold out, so we saw Bruce Almighty. Since I'm sure the Hulk would've sucked, I am really glad we saw Bruce Almighty. It had me in hysterics and I really don't like Jim Carrey.

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 22 June 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the first 1/3 or so was terrific. isn't that always the way with a wacky premise? but midway thru act 3 it's so bogged down in tying up logistical loose ends and delivering and redelivering its 'moral' that all fun is long forgotten.

Aaron A., Sunday, 22 June 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It seemed like the 1/3 you're talking about felt more like 2/3 to me. The tying up shit seemed quick for some reason. You're probably right, though, I'm not good with time unless I can see my watch. Anyway, I couldn't believe how hard I was laughing 2 or 3 times at a movie I felt sure would be only mildly amusing.

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 22 June 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to see this film. i thought it interesting that the billboard posters in the uk and us are so different, the uk ones might be seen as blasphemous in america i guess?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed it. It was funny and it had some good stuff in it to think more about.

toraneko (toraneko), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to hear Jennifer Aniston's orgasm. but Jim Carrey is totally not funny and the trailer has so many cringey bits i'm worried what actually happens in the film. i can imagine that once he's God Bruce just spends his time doing stuff to make him feel evermore empowered whilst perhaps making cash fly out of bank machines causing chaos on the streets and magically fixing all thats wrong in american society (assuming that no thought is given to the rest of the world and the numerous 'heavy' problems dogging it....but then it wouldn't be a light-hearted comedy of course).

me fun hate bad

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Jim Carrey is totally not funny"

:(

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking forward to this film. Hulk looks pretty rubbish.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was a pointless post, i think everything's funny)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd rather see the Hulk. i must be the only person who completely dismisses this 'oh but the CGI just looks terrible' line as actually quite irrelevant. plus i dunno if its bad as such, its just quite surreal - from what i've seen of the film it does actually have a hazy saturated cartoon-like look of sorts, which if intentional could actually be a smart tribute of sorts to the original comic book look and feel.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but from the trailer, it looks like the Hulk doesn't have a story. Big green guy jumps about and throws some tanks.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "from the trailer"??!! From the trailer The Mummy looked like the greatest film ever made!!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Mummy was great!!!!!

I always judge a film by it's trailer! Pirates of the Caribbean looks great!! Rob Zombie vs skeletons!! wahoo!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

well i think Ang Lee and the gang had a predicament there in that how could they revive an old concept/story and make it interesting particulary with so many other superhero remakes having already come out in recent years. i enjoyed X Men 2 despite the realisation that halfway thru the film i had no real feeling that an actual plot was in place, in a way it seemed that nothing was really happening. the only significant developments seemed to be confined to the main characters - but i think this worked and it made a nice change in the way. the background plot of the norm/mutant eradication only really took hold in the last third and did well to cover the ground in as unpredictable a way as possible. Hulk COULD do the same by going quite deep into exploring whats going on in Bruce Banner's mind in how to cope with the fact you are now changed forever and have become a monster etc. and I'd probably find that more interesting than the old 'save world from evil maniac with big bomb' routine.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mummy was okay, Pirate Of The Caribbean i sincerely HOPE IS fantastic

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I love high concept films involving Jim Carrey.

"Everyone's being really nice to me"
"That's because you've got big jugs"

[smack]

Terrific! Bruce Almighty is high on my list.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus Pirates Of The Caribbean has Johnny Depp in it and he = dreamy... Plus a pretty good actor too.

I try not to trust trailers - they tend to take the best bits of a film or put it together in a way as to make it seem like a different film. Take JUT MARRIED - it seemed like a film filled with one farcical moment after another, but when in reality it didn't.

But I love trailers. I'd love to make a film told entirely through a 1½ hour trailer. It would just ocnsist of edit after edit in a trailer style but you'd not notice it after watching it for a while. Hopefully...

N. Ron, Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh trailers can be very deceptive - i remember the one for 'Go' shows the two lap dancers at the same time Breckin Meyer's (or whatever his name is) character is asking Desmond Askew's character 'you had sex with two women?!' which he did tho it was not with the two lap dancers...strange tactics.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, trailers should show all the dull bits instead. The world would be a much better place. It's as if they are adverts, rather than aids to the discerning cinemagoer.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

heehee

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sarcasm? i just think its funny that trailers seems to be getting evermore cynical and calculated in what they present to the viewer and how in order to get people to want to see the film. just an honest representation that doesnt give away too much is all thats needed.

i saw the trailer for the forthcoming American Pie: The Wedding (OH DEAR GOD NO!) recently and it fixated on the one scene that must be one of the top three major setpieces of the film, possibly giving away more than it needed to i dont know.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

N Ron's 'trailer IS the movie' idea would actually be quite interesting to see!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget what the movie wz (= american pie knockoff) but after the trailer my friend amanda said "i would rather eat my hand than see that" which = funny anyway plus proves that not all advertising is cynical

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i am planning the next few weeks entirely around the release of the new 'Charlie's Angels' movie

dave q, Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i still havent seen the first one, crazy fool that i am

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Bruce Almighty posters in Britain look like those Jeff Koons 'media advert' pieces, right down to the FONT (actually Nick pointed this out the other night).

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem it is the best movie ever

dave q, Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The article in the NY Times recently about the theological implications of Morgan Freeman playing God was one of the most unintentionally funny things I've read in a while.

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

like what? 'if God is a black man why does he allow suffering?' perhaps? they should've got Queen Latifah instead.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I just saw Bruce Almighty at the drive in last night, double feature with The Hulk. Bruca Almighty was actually a nice mindless movie after sitting through The Hulk where the screen was so dark at times I had no clue what was going on.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink's song from the new Charlie's Angels is weird!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Even as an American, I was shocked at just how Bible Belt Protestant the main character's theological attitudes and language were -- I can't imagine how this will come off in the UK.

Aaron A., Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like the look of this film. We watched the cable guy as it was on tv last nite. Now i think this film is quite funny, but it always seems to get slated. Why is this?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

pinks song was a cover of a unreleased beck song

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 22 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

there are no movies I want to see in the theater at all. yuck.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I am dying to see the Pirates of the Carribean!! I wish I saw Bruce Almighty, Jim Carrey is my future husband.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 22 June 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the last two Jim Carrey films i saw were The Truman Show and Man In The Moon and i enjoyed both lots.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and thats just reminded me of the Truman Show pisstake in Family Guy - bwahahaha its so great

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i just tried to download Bruce Almighty but all i ended up was an hour of blank screen and no sound...also, 'The Hulk' turned out to be 'Pitch Black'. i hate the internet.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"trailer IS the movie" = Rules of Attraction, surely?

I have enjoyed roughly as many movies with Jim Carrey in them as I have enjoyed movies without Jim Carrey in them. At the cinema, anyway.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Monday, 23 June 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone link me to the posters?

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 23 June 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah i read about that ny times thing, it was like "one imagines if there really were a god He might well look like morgan freeman"

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 23 June 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.impawards.com/2003/posters/bruce_almighty_ver2.jpg

The UK print ads are slightly more obvious.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 23 June 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

he couldnt look anymore like koons if he tried, yr right.
(insert pun about made in heaven)

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 23 June 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to say something very amusing at this juncture, but hey - it could happen to anyone.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 23 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

can't say that Bruce Almighty looks that good, although I luved Jim in Ace Ventura. The scene where he makes his ass talk, classic. "do you have any mints?"

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Monday, 23 June 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

'do ya like jazz ?'

Bruce Almighty was better than i expected but i am easily pleased - the tomb raider 2 and POTC adverts had me drooling salsa dip in anticipation of ACKSHUN movies this summer. Jim Carrey - i like any of his sillier movies. Best quote from the young un - 'isn't the guy playing god spotty'

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 23 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand the point of Jim Carrey being in a high concept comedy. Surely Jom Carrey should be in a low concept - plenty of room for Jim Carrey to do Jim Carrey schtick comedy. After all parading him as a normal bloke around the concept loses the reason why he is funny. He is a disruptive influence (cf Ace Ventura, The Mask & Dumb and Dumber).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 23 June 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

but Carrey was brilliant in The Truman Show and Man In The Moon and they were high concept! i think this boils down to the fact that even tho Carrey is loved best for his 'zany goofball' persona, i think i find that other side to him less tiresome. same thing happens when Robin Williams does a straight role or a less zany character (as his last few films where he hammed up the kerazy guy role were all panned but the likes of 'good will hunting' and 'one hour photo' seemed to get more favourable reviews and praise of his performance in those)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 23 June 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

But they weren't out and out comedies (drama first and foremost). This is an out and out comedy and seems to be as dire as Liar Liar (again the concept is the reason for his crazy schtick and hence will be exorcised out of him by the end - leaving us with the spectre of laughter taken away, a moral that being funny is not good = a downer).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 23 June 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna rent the Majestic from Blockbuster.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 June 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually enjoyed Liar Liar! I've not seen RULES OF ATTRACTION. But I meant literally in a trailer style. As though you think "oh - i see a trailer". But it goes on. And on and on and on like ariston. Until the breakadawn. Created by N. Ron.

Anyhoo, they're in my hair!

N. Ron, Monday, 23 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

BRUCE ALMIGHTY FUCKING BLOWS. Don't waste your money.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was ok towards the beginning, but then it got too preachy. Turns out I wasn't that far off base. Here is an interview with the director which explores his motives.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And I must agree with Anthony Miccio that there are no movies I want to see in the theater at all. yuck. Though I am somewhat tempted to go see Finding Nemo...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

While I have no interest in seeing the movie, I have to say that the interview with Shadyac wasn't that preachy in comparison to many things I've read. Heck if anything it's both a relief and a pleasure to see him note about how there's such a limiting mindset among many Christians that would write off or ignore movies (and by implication many other artistic works) precisely because they are not obviously about religion or the religious life. The reverse of course can be equally true about how those of us who are non- or areligious can too readily write off those works that are obviously religious etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am scoffing at the folks who are saying that The Hulk doesn't have a story. It has more of a story than all of the other recent Marvel films put together.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I ain't seen Hulk yet, it doesn't have a story in the trailer, or a hint of a story. I wanna be wrong, I wanna be wrong!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

So what's the story of Daredevil based on the trailer? Or either X-Men film?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The joy of people attacking each other, surely. That's not a story?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

story is over-rated - more shoddy CGI please!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I didn't think much of Daredevil or X-men from the trailer either, didn't think much of Daredevil full-length. X-men was okay. It's not a full-proof theory.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

80º?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Why isn't the Hulk movie called Bruce Almighty? It's confusing. I might accidentally see the wrong one.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 23 June 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
So....

Evan Almighty. Evan (Steve Carrell) is told by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark for the great flood.

This thing cost $300 million.

Wtf.

chaki, Sunday, 25 March 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. $50 million more than Casino Royale's overall cost (including marketing I think). Crazy.

hey people i just saw the movie and i have to say i was pleasantly surprised... i went to the screening thinking and hoping it was gonna be pirates of the caribbean based on information i was told and was kinda disappointed when it was evan almighty but the screening was awesome. Steve Carell is sooo funny but the movie belongs to wanda sykes aide to to steve carells congressman character. her one liners and commentaries make the movie and along with some extremely comic building antics it made the movie a great comic movie. Now its a little predictable but i strongly advise you to go see it.

I know I just saw it too. It was funny, I liked it better than bruce almighty. wanda sykes was really funny in this and so was steve carrell. Morgan Freeman was also awesome as God.

THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAA!!

I saw this recently and it was really, extremely bad. It's completely saturated in cynicism and you almost feel sorry for whatever mainstream Christian audience laps this type of dreck up. You more or less have to hate every character in this movie.

I absolutely refuse to see any other movie featuring Jim Carrey from this moment on, including the ones I used to enjoy (Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura). I have spent an hour and a half in the Hell that is his all-consuming ego.
