wisdom teeth...........o woe is me :-(

you would think, that by the age of 39, wisdom teeth would have either been and gone or never going to make an appearance.
unfortunately for me, mine seem to make an entrance about every 10 years, just going up and down, 2 at a time usually and boy are they painful!
at the moment i have the 2 right-side ones top and bottom causing havoc. my whole gum in there is just a mess of painfully swollen mush...yuck!
i cant eat, cant smile, can hardly talk and my face is starting to look all lop-sided.
at least now i do have a real empathy for my son and his teething problems! ( i have even been sneaking some of his gum jel ).

am i alone in being tormented in this way? have you had yours out? i tried once but they went back in and the dentist said he couldnt do it.

donna (donna), Sunday, 22 June 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

to pre-empt the inevitable response - no, i doubt very much that it means i am finally gaining any wisdom.

donna (donna), Sunday, 22 June 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine go in and out too. Feels like having a bad cold for a month. I keep getting cavities on them. I'm gonna keep them if I can, though. I'm stupid enough as it is (har har).

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 22 June 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

mine came out, stayed out, and are perfectly happy. I have the finest dentition of my family thanks to my long, deadly jaw. I can even floss them. Hooray for wisdom teeth, the indie rock of mouthage.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You can use them to chew on bones when the rest of your teeth have worn away.

Mine came up, but under a flap of skin which I now explore with my tongue when nervous. It's fun!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 22 June 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I have a flap of skin where my bottom right one used to be. I thought that was weird, but apparently it's not! Yay for colin and his flap of skin! (not to be taken out of context please...)

Mine all came in and developed abscesses on the way, hence several white-knuckled screaming trips to the dental hospital :(

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 June 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

:( for donna

i had that flap of skin too!! the dentist said "blimey, usually only little kids get this"

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I had my upper wisdoms taken out a couple years ago when one got infected. Was wacked out on Vicodin and went to the Mogwai/Bardo Pond show anyway (it was good).

Cold soups were my friend in the aftermath.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 22 June 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I had my upper ones out many years ago. No trouble with the lower ones.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

upper ones came in unnoticed, lower ones came in a bit and stopped => flap of skin.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, which is v. sore when you bite down upon by mistake and then hurts for long times.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine are causing me some gip at the moment. Mars Bars in particular seem to aggravate them. The wee fuckers.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the flap of skin too! AND NOW IT'S GONE what's that all about?

p.s. take painkillers afterwards. The anaethetic will wear off and you'll find yourself in the middle of a golf course crying. Um.

Mark C (Mark C), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Got rid of all four in one fell swoop three years back -- no cavities, they had all come in to one extent or another, but my dentist thought that given how the gumline was pulling away it might be best to just lose 'em. Operation worked liked a charm and I was out and about the following day, only had to use a couple of Vicodin. Rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

One of these abscess-ridden things occurred when I was meant to be reviewing a Kingmaker gig for the student paper. I was in too much pain to go, so wrote a review of my trip to the dentist instead, commenting how it was infinitely preferable to having to listen to Kingmaker. The editor (a Kingmaker fan) was none too impressed, refused to publish it, and made me review every shit album and gig that no-one else wanted to do for ages :(

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone have any good tips for relieving toothache?

My man woke up in agony today with a really painful toothache, and he can't get to a dentist until tomorrow. I've dosed him up with Paracetamol and Ibuprofen tablets, cups of tea and lots of sympathy but he's going out of his mind with the pain. He's tried dabbing on clove oil too, but that make him want to throw up :(

Any other helpful suggestions (bearing in mind it's Sunday afternoon and most shops are shut now)?

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't his dentist have a 24-hour emergency call-out service?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus H Christ - I hadn't though of that, I just presumed dentists only worked normal hours. I'll try phoning them now. Thanks, Ailsa!

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I phoned his dentist and there was a recorded message saying the Emergency out-of-hours surgery was open for an hour first thing this morning (and which we have obviously missed).

The poor guy is crying with pain now - should I take him to A&E or something? Will they help him at hospital or will they grumble that they are not dentists and he should go home and stop bothering them? I can't bear to see him in pain like this.

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

go hospital straightaway, if they grumble, whatever, as long as he gets something for the pain

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right, of course, I shouldn't be worried about whether they grumble or not. Dental pain is the nearest thing to Hell there is :(

I'm taking him to hospital now.

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Coincidentally I just got mine out on Thursday, Donna. Only the bottoms were hurting but the doctor said to pull them all out. I've had many a milkshake over the past few days and I look forward to eating real food again.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sorry for you Donna, this pain is harsh! Mine seem to have a growth spurt every now & again & it is a real pain (pardon the pun.) My dentit says I might need them out soon as they are growing at an odd angle. I am not really into this idea as my friend had her out & all of the nerves in her tongue were damaged. gulp!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, maybe you should stop deep frying them.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have those flaps too. I also have, factoid, too many teeth. My dentist told me several years ago, "Well, this is not right, you have a few extra". It's frightening.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 23 June 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the grosser parts of the outing of teeth is the sluph or puss that fills in the hole. this has a habit of dislodging at the most in-opportune times. like parties.

"g'day, i'm chris and i have a mouthloud of puss"

my thoughts are with you donna!

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 23 June 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I only had 3 wisdom teef. There was no fourth one. I got told this means I'm further along the evolutionary chain ;) ha!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 23 June 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

wow trayce me too! maybe ally has our extras.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 June 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

In my early 20s I had some pain in the back of my mouth, but below gumline. I assumed it was my wisdom teeth, far below and impacted or something awful. I told my dentist my wisdom teeth were causing trouble. He told me to say "ahhh" and looked around and pronounced "well, your wisdom teeth look fine I don't think you have a problem, just irritation".

"But... how do you know, don't you need, like, X-rays?"

"What? Your wisdom teeth are all in place and exposed and they're fine. Didn't you NOTICE four GIANT MOLARS erupted into your mouth?"

"Uh... no."

The correct response for me was "So? Psssshh. I've been drunk the past four years. Molars schmollers."

Sooo, yeah. Wisdom teeth. Classic if they're out and proud. If they are in and out and in and out and/or all pussy- quite dud! Speedy recovery Donna-

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 23 June 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I had all four of mine pulled in late teenagehood. The dentist pulled one and placed it on my tongue for a second, to get a better grip, and I swallowed it. Apparently that's not the right thing to do. I was supposed to check the bowl to see if it passed through, but I never did and lied about it. So it may still be floating around in my intestinal track. Ew - and I got that "Dry Socket" crap, too - disgusting!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 23 June 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I had all 4 of mine out at once when I was about 21 - they were all impacted, though not bothering me - and I had general anesthesia. My mom picked me up and dropped me at home, but took my precription for meds to work with her and didn't bring them over until 5 hours later. I woke up at one point and drank really cold water - made me cry because it hurt so much. I looked like Pumpkinhead about 2 or 3 days later, but it didn't last long.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 June 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I had mine taken out when I was 17 to take advantage of my parents' insurance. The operation was no problem. I got nitrous oxide, wheee! Recovery was awful. The stiches were horrible.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

I got rid of all mine, back whenever it was. I was advised my gob wasn't big enough for all five.

Oh yeah, I had five wisdoms. Dentist said he'd never seen that before.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

The dentist I saw a few months back said it was fine and they were just coming through but I don't think they were impacting. But the pain is a bit stronger now so I guess I'd better get them looked at again. On the plus side my dentist is HOTT.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

What a timely thread. I've got a wisdom tooth finally starting to poke through. It's been threatening for years. It'll give me gyp for a couple of weeks at a time and then the pain vanishes entirely for months. Then it comes back and I think finally, this time it's going to come through, and then it doesn't.

On sunday though I discovered that it's 'erupted', I have a tiny wee iceberg of new tooth just visible above the gum.

My mouth is whanging though, I'm living on soup, yoghurt and painkillers just now and I'm going to buy a teething ring on the way home.

Seriously. A water filled one to cool in the fridge. Bliss.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Mine all came up over a period of a few years during my twenties. Then suddenly during my early thirties one of them decided to fall apart, necessitating some serious dental surgery (the first dental work I've ever needed) I got sedated and everything - the drugs were fantastic.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I thought I didn't have any upper ones but one came through when I was 27. The other one is still MIA. Lower ones came through when I was 21 and were excrutiatingly painful for one night, was up all night in agony, then just as quickly they were fine.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

I've got one coming through (lower left) which occasionally gives me a day's discomfort, but so far that's all. I had the lower right one removed about 5 years ago and I just can't face that *sound* again...

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

The afternoon after getting my first wisdom tooth out is something of a fond memory for me. I curled up with my vicodin & and a book about Rasputin. Every hour or so I'd look up, notice it was getting darker outside, and eat some more ice cream.
The interesting hole left over, once healed, could be used for hiding
things in houdini style.

Annabelle Lennox (Arachne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

i had one pulled a couple of weeks ago because it was growing in. the removal took less than a minute, the most annoying part was the changing of the guaze the rest of the afternoon, and within a day or so i felt no pain. the motrin helped, maybe, but i didn't take much of it.

Argh, what sort of a joke is this!? Naive me knew little about wisdom teeth, except that they come out at the back of your mouth and people say they hurt, so the other day when I found a flap of gum on the right hand side of my mouth with a new tooth under it I completely flipped.

It hurts like nothing else when I poke it with my tongue, and brushing over there is totally out of the question so I bet my breath smells terrible. I asked a friend and he said "general breath smell", then went on to advise me to buy some mouthwash.

So, a few questions, as I'm still pretty much in the dark about this sort of thing:

1) How to stop pain, plz?
2) Should I see a dentist just to check everything's okay? Maybe he can remove the flap of gum and the temptation to poke it!
3) How long does this shit last? :(

I've already defrosted the nicest looking pizza to eat tomorrow, and it doesn't look like I'll be able to handle it.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 16 June 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

1) Anbesol is your friend. Trust me.
2) YES YES YES YES
3) Until the flap falls of or you get that shit yanked.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

Youre in the UK yah Patrick? Maybe go to the chemists and buy some paracetamol/codiene tablets, and also get some kind of mouthwash that has anasthetic in it (it wont help much but should tide you over).

I am now wishing I could remember which wisdom tooth I never got, because this thread has me worried it'll make a rogue appearance when I least expect it!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

I have all of my wisdom teeth. Every so often, they come and pay me a visit.

Sucks. BTW, RE: how long does this shit last...I'm running on 6 years.

John Justen, UMSOGTH PERMAPRESS CTHULU. (johnjusten), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

I had mine out before my senior year in high school - and I had not just four but FIVE wisdom teeth. Not only that, but I also had another tooth embedded in the soft palate of my tooth removed during this dental surgery experience. The actual surgery wasn't too bad, as I recall, although the fact that the dental surgeon's name was Dr. Schmucker didn't inspire confidence. My big worry was that I was going to say something revealing while I was being put under. Ha.

I'd try seeking a second opinion from another dentist or dental surgeon to see if you can get them removed.

Got my wisdom teeth out today around 5ish. The bleeding still hasn't stopped entirely, tho at least I was able to eat some pudding. God, it was painful before I got on the percoset. Does anyone else who went through this remember is the bleeding stopped right away, or whether it took awhile? (I'm using the gauze to compress it every now and then, but even if I don't put the gauze in, I'm pretty functional. The bleeding is minimal enough that I can just swallow it.)
