What do you have to say to that?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You appear to have cut your nose young man. Get it seen to at once.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Betta then Stallone, Eastwood, Schwarzenegger and any other pretender to the throne.

Yes but he was rubbish at escaping from concentration camps.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Julie Andrews was way more adept at tricking Nazis, come to think of it.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I wrote a song once called "Islamic Jihad" that had a verse in it about how in my dreams I'm Steve McQueen (mostly because he got to play hidden sausage with that babe from The Getaway)

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Share the lyrics, please, Millar.

I like his MGM barrette.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you should get one for when you move to London.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Look what I found

the one God Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet
Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad
the one God Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet
Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad

Well in my dreams I'm Steve McQueen
And I move so fast I can't be seen
And my fingers smell like nicotine
Cause in my dreams I'm Steve McQueen

the one God Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet
Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad
the one God Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet
Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad

etc. ad infinitum with finger-snapping and a bit of softshoe and/or strutting

The Tao of Him is da shizzle!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Best part of Fastlane is Billie's Steve McQueen fetish and the car from Bullitt.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That makes no sense, it's great. I'm going to post it on my cubicle at work and see if anyone says anything.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i like how Jacqueline Bisset did absolutely fuck all in Bullitt, yet was still a featured star.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What is there to "get"?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

only thing I know I like about him is that he's not Robert Redford.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he's much better.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He's my dad's favorite, and I was named after his son (who's in the Karate Kid!)

chad s. (synkro), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

TCM was showing a Steve McQueen marathon yesterday. It featured Thomas Crown Affair, The Great Escape, The Blob, The Magnificent Seven, and The Cincinnatti Kid, amongst others. The fact that I left the tv and was willing to miss any of this says a lot about my company this weekend. I pity the fool who didn't have my boyfriend and/or friends and missed this.

Just trust me though.

No he is not as good, Mary. We should hang out this weekend though, I'll bring all my Steve McQueen movies and also the Great Escape videogame and prove all of this to you.

Hey do you want to go see the Streets/Dizzee Rascal maybe? bnw said he was thinking about it and Otis and I bought tix tonight. For the Tues. show.

I do need to be indoctrinated in all things McQueen. Yes, definitely this weekend, and is the Streets/Dizzy this Tues? I could go but fear Irving Plaza. I haven't seen a non-capactity show there since I saw Yoko Ono there in '96, oh those were the days.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Mitchum>Steve McQueen>Paul Newman>everyone else

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not this Tues, it is two Tuesday from now, the 29th. I have never actually seen a show at Irving Plaza! But I am definitely going now.

This weekend I will indoctrinate you and all others interested in the religion of McQueen. It is important to know, I feel, to understand everything else properly.

This is completely untrue. The Tao of Steve sucks some major ass, even for an indie-comedy.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary, I totally understand. It's like how sometimes I have to watch John Cusack instead of Steve McQueen, you know?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

hey..I love steve...I own The Getaway and have a poster of Bullet in my living room...but I have to put Clint ahead of him, if only, at least for the Sergio Leone trilogy, the Beguiled and directing/starring in the Unforgiven.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

BULLITT GODDAMN YOU BULLITT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There's never a time when taking Cusack over Steve is acceptable.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not talking about choosing it, I'm talking about needing it. You'll never understand. *runs off crying*

Allyzay, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry it's late, anyway, Clint's way better.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not convinced about Clint. He doesn't have that much presence outside of the Dollars trilogy (and that could be almost anyone, couldn't it?). Other than, you've got Dirty Harry, and from that everyone remembers the gun, not Clint.

Someday I will own that poster.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Clint yelling at little girls in the Beguiled...he has subtle dimensions to his characters, expressed sublimely. Steve is like a statue to me, a beautiful, intense and powerful statue, but I don't think he has Clint's "range". And though I wouldn't say it's his fault, he didn't make as many good movies. And Clint DIRECTED the Unforgiven, which I think is a supremely beautiful and powerful movie. Also Play Misty For Me.

But you're right to a degree about "that could be almost anyone", I just watched the DVD of "Once Upon a Time in the West" and Leone could do an extreme close-up of Mr. Belvedere squinting and get a powerful response.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A Perfect World is my favorite Clint-directed film. I think that might have been the last time anyone got a good performance out of Kevin Costner.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 13 July 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I saw him not so long ago, while watching a videotape of Papillon. You know, he wasn't such a slouch as an actor. Dustin Hoffman certainly didn't outshine him in that. He clearly was a John Wayne sort of actor, though - he needed a part he could live in, rather than reinventing himself for the part.

Steve's Ferrari goes on auction this week in Monterey. As I happen to be flying up to Monterey tonight to visit family in Carmel for a few days, I might have to look into this (as a spectator, but if Ally wants to rob some banks and send me the necessary funds I'll see what I can do).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Cooler than Steve McQueen, huh?

Let's see -

Nope. Really can't do it. Some try, but then fail. And then there are flashes of brilliance, but no sustained coolness to rival Steve.

Well done, Ally.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Never mind -- the $175 price for entry to the Concours meant I left it to my relatives to do instead. But I did find a sign of the man's holy presence at dinner on Thursday:

His best film, yep. I've thought about rewatching The Getaway but the frist viewing more than 15 years ago was dispiriting.

I remember hearing so much about him and then finally watching Bullit and I thought it was insanely boring and he especially was insanely boring. Then I tried The Getaway and I thought it was a piece of garbage. Admittedly, he has a lot of movies, and these are two.

mcqueen owns fwiw, the thing about 'bullitt' is it's not an action movie despite its reputation, it's a pretty low-key movie. i was underwhelmed the first time i saw it but when i saw it a second time years later, i thought it was pretty excellent and the style worked for me a lot.

nomar, Thursday, 7 April 2016 03:58 (nine years ago)

re JB, Robert Preston and Ida Lupino are great as his parents (both only 12 years older than Steve); the tender scene they have toward the end is quite heartbreaking.
