Retrofitted with up-to-date ironic icons. Available at Outfit Urbaners among other places. I have: 1) navy with multicolored hearts and 2) green with interlocking navy tennis rackets pattern. I want 3) brown with tan sea anchor theme (naturallement) and 4) light blue with purple rainbows and clouds (maybe). Tell me about your 80s-style canvas belts.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a green one, but it's not very canvassy. This is the only new fashion thing I own where I can say "naw, I've had that since 1996 or so!"

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 June 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What, the elasticated preppy ones from the early '80s or the doppleganger non-elasticated ones you can buy in Hennes?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 23 June 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I went in UO the other day and felt like a tool b/c I had a bunch of stuff there, except I'd thrifted it so at least my cheap plastic bangle bracelets didn't cost me $12 apiece..
I don't have any canvas belts but I did thrift a silver 80s metal stretchy belt & a couple of black ones.. I was looking for an elastic preppy one but it's hard to find a good one that fits right. I'm sure it'll turn up soon though.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 23 June 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pink one now. But when I was younger I had a stripey one, which I loved. *sigh*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 23 June 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Are these the ones the have a clasp that interlocks, snakey style? We had those in the 70s!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Were these worn by a different class of American in the past at all?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 23 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They look sort of like this:

http://tallships.sailtraining.org/images/shipstre/belt.jpg

Martin, they were worn mostly by preppies.

Suzy, what are the elasticated ones all about?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the ones I was talking about were elasticated too.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god I'm wearing one right now! I don't wear leather anymore so this is my Belt Of Last Resort...and it's amazing. (No frippery, though: it's black, it's not real stretchy, it was $5 at Old Navy.)

Neudonym, Monday, 23 June 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This happens to me lately: I'm in a boutique, I see a nice preppy girl tie, I pick it up, and it's some kind of belt made from a tie, with a large metal-type clamp on it, ruining the tieness.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a red paul frank julius belt of woven cotton (non-stretchy) and with the flat belt buckle that you wind the tip around inside and works on some kind of resistance principle. It usually takes me a while to figure out in the morning. It is also way too long so the end with julius on it dangles down to my knees but I kinda like that.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Proving once again that A Separate Peace = fashion source of the future. Seriously, I remember reading that and thinking "He wears his tie as a belt? That's brilliant!" Unfortunately when I tried this I ran into some length-related problems I couldn't quite figure out how to overcome.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny, dangling is great, that way its lots more visible. It's like, look, I'm so thin that I have all this extra belt material. Also, Paul Frank is the holy grail of the canvas belt wearer, esp. when you buy a belt last season that isn't available anymore, instant collectors item.

Nitsuh, the double fold? I will be permanently in awe of anyone who wears a rep tie as a belt to the July 4 FAP. Hint, hint: Aaron G.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, what about these?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I love butterlies, I won a butterfly and heart bracelet at C.I.; Felicity and I have to go back and play more skeet ball and get more jewelry.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm over this style, though I'm still using the canvas belts to hold my jeans up. What kind of belt should I get next?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a silver stretchy metal snake kind of 1980s belt with a flat oval buckle (really, a clasp) at the thrift store last weekend -- remember those? They look cute in gold or silver with a jeans skirt or dark jeans, scallop/heart/engraved closure optional.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Was this a thrift store in Lake Geneva? I'm not really picturing this belt. Visuals?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember this! :) I had an elastic one in the '80s that was rainbow striped. I noticed the elastic ones had the interlocking horeshoe-shaped rings as a clasp, while the nonelasticized canvas belts just had 2 rings you were supposed to slide the belt around to close. I always got confused either way.

Jasmine U. (Jasmine U.), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

okay the not-clasp belt body part of it kind of looks like if you got a really big nightcrawler and cast it in metal using a lost wax technique. It's a little bit Disco. I will search for a photo.

Actually that one is very nice. Maybe I will bid on it.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm into curduroy jumpers for the fall back-to-school season. You don't need a belt for those. There is a nice red one at UA.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Please explain curduroy jumpers.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The very color of the one I covet.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But that's a tiny dress!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Picture it more this size

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's only 2cm tall!

(and it's still a dress)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So curduroy jumper = pinafore dress?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely we've been through this all before.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Jcrew has pretty skinny blue leather belts with two rings to fasten the belt with. I'm hoping that they'll have some left when they get around to putting everything on sale, since it's such a nice shade of blue.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I want one of their ribbon belts(orange & navy) but.. sigh.. I can't really justify spending $28 on a belt right now. A year ago, I'd have bought it immediately..

Speaking of which, I am having a fashion dilemma. I thrifted these totally bitchin 80s Nike high tops (Air Reversal) - they're PURPLE with a red swoosh & laces. But.. uh.. should I really WEAR these? I mean, they rock, the issue is only that I have big feet & I don't want to look like a fool. maybe I should take a photo..

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 2 August 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, wear them!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

if you don't wear them, send them to me.

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 August 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, I mean I have like BIG feet. they are size 11.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what they say about a girl with big feet...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Response: No, I don't know. What do they say about a girl with big feet?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Response: I don't know either. I was asking.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

size 11 women's or men's? i have size 9-10 womens...
haha you're not gonna give them to me are you.

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 August 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Noone ever sees mens belts.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not true! i just saw some pictures of my best friend's recent trip to mexico and the belts are very prominent, a prized and admired accessory.

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 August 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I must start wearing shorter shirts

I have 1 of the belts but I don't wear it much cos I am pudgy.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan the key to this look is in fact longer shirts that you tuck in (oh no!)

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

also, slicked back hair.

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i got one from H&M a few weeks ago thats horizonatal navy blue & light blue stripes

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 2 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the fashion thread must not die! Why aren't there MORE about bad awesome 80s fashion?

Minna, yeah, I gotta hang on to the high tops. I'm probably going to be walking around looking like a damn fool but they amuse me, and that counts for something.
