Jackie Chan: Search And Destroy

What you want when you get out a Jackie Chan film: mad kung-fu action with unlikely objects. Played-straight yet very stupid plot and script. i.e. search - Police Story and sequel.

What you don't want when you get out a Jackie Chan film: Benny Hill-style sex comedy. i.e. destroy - City Hunter.

How about you?

Tom, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jackie is the Buster Keaton of our age. Buster Keaton was so called because he was well known for Bustin' peoples noses. SO direct parallel their.

Its a bit of a pity that now Jackie is getting old he is starting to enter his Hollywood career. If they had got hold of him ten years ago we would never have had End Of Days. Still even Shanghai Noon is top comedy fun - though Police Story am be his best.

Search any film where he plays a character called Jackie. Destroy the Jackie Chan crtoon series. Why?

Pete, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Drunken Master, Rumble in the Bronx

Destroy: Rush Hour, Mr. Nice Guy, Supercop

Jeff, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bed bound with flu, partner hires video to cheer-me-up. Only in art- house box I find JC's 'Rumble in the Bronx'. JC single-handedly taking on the Bronx's baddest biker-gang. Chan can't act, the plot was pitiful with this wierd semi-dubbed dialogue. Yet the slapstick fight-scenes were hilarious, and strangely beautiful. Most entertaining.

stevo, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rumble in the bronx was great because it was filmed in vancouver, british columbia which explains the sparkling clean tree-lined streets of the bronx and the rocky mountains in the background.

fritz, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The end of Rumble in the Bronx is weird. (If you haven't seen it yet look away now) Why do they have to run over the baddie in a hovercraft on the golf course?

Search: DRUNKEN MASTER II! Clearly.

Destroy: Umm. Even the painful ones have a grain of worthiness, so I don't know.

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy: An Allan Smithee Film, where him 'n' Sly Stallone 'n' Whoopi Goldberg are the stars of the film within the film. I suspect he only did it to meet his idol Stallone.

He was filming around here recently, and I turned up and stood in the rain for a half-hour to get a glimpse of him. I genuinely can't think of another star I'd do that for.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gorgeous is the closest he's come to making an irredeemable movie (it's a romantic comedy, for God's sake), but the female lead in it is so cute and silly in the best way. She saves it. But I've enjoyed basically every other Jackie Chan movie I've seen. Favs: Rumble in the Bronx, Who Am I?, Shanghai Noon.

palpable, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let's try that again. Search: Cannonball Run and its sequel, obviously. Also the Bruce Lee movies where he worked stunts. His prop fighting is right up there with Sabu (only with less of an air of pathos/gravity). Perhaps he is to Sabu what Arnold is to Sly, a cartoonish parody of the violent soul. I don't like the comedy bits at all.

Kris, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search : The ones with the friendly uncle or female figure that keep slapping him. Or Drunken Master.

Search - The Young Master, Dragons Forever, Police Story series, Snake in the Eagles Shadow, Project A... basically all the classic Hong Kong films from the late seventies to the late eighties.

Destroy - Battle Creek Brawl, Rush Hour et al... Jackie in Hollywood is not quite the same, and really destroy City Hunter as it is pap.

His Category 3 debut, Island of Fire, is just kind of mediocre.

Jackie still rules.

Jackie was kinda screwed when he came to America - there was no way he could go the Chow Yun Fat route and make a bid for dramatic leading man/"serious actor" status, and he couldn't stay behind in HK and continue working as he had in the past.

The first Rush Hour is okay.

from Subway Cinema (Asian film in NY) newsletter:

Jackie Chan's grim, downbeat crime film, THE SHINJUKU INCIDENT, opens this weekend at the Loews on the corner of Third Avenue and 11th Street. It's not a perfect film, but it's a big, expansive saga telling the tale of a Chinese immigrant in Japan becoming a crimelord. No stunts from Jackie this time - he's just acting as hard as he can.

nice turnout for Police Story last night at Lincoln Ctr, which has 4 amazing set pieces: two cars crashing through a hillside village (app ripped off by Bad Boys 2), JC dangling from an umbrella hooked onto a bus, a fight where he and the baddies fly into and out of cars, and the celebrated mall finale w/ broken glass everywhere.

I like him in comedic mode when he's mugging and getting hit in the face w/ cakes by angry women too.

Obviously Jackie Chan rules. But I watched Police Story 3 with my nephew last night, the first time I'd see it in over 30 years, and aside from a handful of stunts (of course) it just didn't hold up as well as I remembered it. He's charming, those stunts are cool but the movie was kinda an incoherent/convoluted mess, lol, like it was missing a few scenes or something (I saw the original cut). Police Story 1 held up much better on a recent rewatch, as did (more or less) Armour of God 2, though that one is pretty dumb (by design) and dated.
